The purpose of this study was to examine the long-term retention of F and Ti in dentin after a brief application of 1% TiF4. Six facets of exposed dentin in each of four beagle dogs were treated for 10 sec or 1 min with a 1% solution of TiF4. Four control facets in a fifth dog were left untreated and extracted after 12 weeks. The TiF4-treated teeth were harvested after 4, 8, and 22 weeks and analyzed for F and Ti with an electron microprobe. The effect of sodium and stannous fluoride compounds on the coherence of Streptococcus mutans was examined. Both commercial and reagent grade preparations were tested on S. mutans, strain 6715. We examined 102 children born and reared in an area of rural Kenya with 2 ppm fluoride in the drinking water for dental fluorosis, using the index developed by Thylstrup and Fejerskov (1978). The prevalence of dental fluorosis was 100%, 92% of all teeth exhibited a TFI score of 4 or higher, and 50% of the children had pitting or more severe enamel damage in at least half the teeth present. Fluoride irreversibly inhibits the (Na + K)-ATPase, and this inactivation requires divalent cations (Mg2+, Mn2+, or Ca2+), is augmented by K+, but is diminished by Na+ and by ATP. Using a 2 X 2 factorial design, we evaluated the possible interaction of vitamin A deficiency and excess fluoride in rat dentin and bone. Simultaneous presence of excess fluoride plus vitamin A deficiency resulted in a significant decrease in bone fluoride concentration compared to the presence of excess fluoride alone. Vitamin A deficiency alone significantly reduced calcium concentration in dentin formed during the deficient period.

Demineralization of enamel was induced by applying orthodontic bands in 15 patients having two of their premolars extracted for orthodontic reasons. After a 4-wk caries induction period, eight patients were instructed to rinse their teeth once daily with a neutral 0.05% NaF solution, whereas seven patients received a single treatment with a neutral 2% NaF solution. Large White male turkeys were fed rations containing 0, 12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 ppm added fluoride (F) from sodium fluoride in a corn-soybean assay diet containing tricalcium phosphate and 3 to 5 ppm F. The 800 ppm treatment was discontinued at 8 weeks because of low weight gains and a high incidence of leg disorders. The effect of three commercially prepared fluoride compounds (acidulated phosphate fluoride 1.23% F-, stannous fluoride 0.4%, and sodium fluoride 0.05%) diluted to various concentrations with brain heart infusion broth, on the growth of five strains of Actinomyces viscosus following 1 and 24 hours' exposure to the fluorides was studied.
