A 42-year-old woman suffered shortness of breath and whole-body pain, more prominent in both thighs. After the initial assessment, a paraneoplastic syndrome was considered clinically, and FDG PET/CT was performed to search culprit malignancy. The images did not reveal any focal lesion typical of solid hypermetabolic malignancy. Instead, diffuse increased muscle activity was noted in most musculatures, with some focally intense. The findings were suggestive of polymyositis, which was subsequently confirmed.

The use of positron emission tomography (PET) imaging in progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) has rarely been reported. We herein report a set of PET images in a 63-year-old patient with PML. In PML lesions, the uptake of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose, 11C-methionine, 11C-flumazenil, and [methyl-11C]4'-thiothymidine was decreased, increased, decreased, and unchanged, respectively. These results suggest that glucose metabolism decreased, protein synthesis increased, neuronal integrity decreased, and the DNA synthesis and cellular proliferation of host cells were not activated in PML lesion

Extranodal involvement is more common with Burkitt lymphoma (BL) than other subtypes of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in childhood. According to our knowledge, there are rare cases in the literature about muscle involvement of BL, and its F-FDG PET/CT findings were not well defined. We report a 6-year-old girl with a histopathologic diagnosis of BL and referred for staging with PET/CT. FDG-avid abdominal lymph nodes and diffuse involvements of right quadriceps muscle were demonstrated.

BACKGROUND: Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is an uncommon autoimmune inflammatory disease that may affect cartilage throughout the body.
CASE REPORT: We report on a case of fever of unknown origin in which 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) was performed to make a diagnosis of RP.
CONCLUSION: Our case demonstrates that the use of 18F-FDG PET/CT is a useful diagnostic tool to accurately determine the extent of inflammation throughout the body which can be identified by an increased 18F-FDG uptake.

Hypertension in a 6-year-old girl was the presenting sign of a stage I neuroblastoma. This tumor corresponded to a left adrenal gland mass. Hypertension resolved immediately after complete surgical resection of the tumor with an uneventful follow-up (24 months at the present time). Preoperative assessment by nuclear medicine techniques showed weak uptake of I-MIBG and F-FDOPA contrasting with high F-FDG uptake by the tumor.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the utility of (18)F-FDG PET/CT in the differentiation of benign and malignant solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura (SFTP).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on the (18)F-FDG PET/CT data from 17 patients with histopathologically diagnosed benign or malignant SFTP. The size, side of SFTP, presence of necrosis, calcification, pleural effusion, hilar lymphadenopathy (LAP), density on CT images (Hounsfield unit-HU), and (18)F-FDG uptake (SUVmax) were recorded and compared in order to detect malignant SFTP. Statistical significance was set as p<

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis is an uncommon manifestation of non-central nervous system (CNS) metastatic disease. Diagnosis, however, has important prognostic and treatment implications. We present a case in which intracranial leptomeningeal carcinomatosis from a primary breast cancer was detected with (18)F-FDG PET/CT, despite its low sensitivity for detection of CNS metastases from non-CNS primary tumors.

A 69-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis and pleuritis presented with dyspnea. On admission, she was afebrile and had an oxygen saturation of 97% on ambient air. Chest radiography and CT revealed only subtle ground-glass opacities. However, FDG PET revealed pathological uptake in both lungs. A diagnosis of Pneumocystis pneumonia was made based on a positive β-D-glucan assay and polymerase chain reaction amplification of Pneumocystis jirovecii from the sputum. Posttreatment FDG PET revealed resolution of the previously noted uptake. This case illustrates that FDG PET can be used to diagnos

PURPOSE: Positron emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear medical imaging technology that produces 3D images reflecting tissue metabolic activity in human body. PET has been widely used in various clinical applications, such as in diagnosis of brain disorders. High-quality PET images play an essential role in diagnosing brain diseases/disorders. In practice, in order to obtain high-quality PET images, a standard-dose radionuclide (tracer) needs to be used and injected into a living body. As a result, it will inevitably increase the patient's exposure to radiation. One solution to solve this pro

OBJECTIVE: Tissue uptake of 2-deoxy-2-fluorine-18 fludeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) is routinely quantified as standardized uptake value (SUV), which in general is the fraction (F) of administered activity per millilitre of tissue multiplied by an index of body size, usually weight (W), i.e. F/ml × W = SUV or F/ml = SUV × (1/W). Other indices have been suggested as preferable to W, especially lean body mass (LBM) and body surface area (BSA). The second equation mentioned above shows that the reciprocal of the ideal index should correlate closely with F/ml and give a regression line through the origi

We report about the usefulness of F-FDG PET for the detection and therapy response evaluation of renal sarcoidosis. A 55-year-old woman presented with a condition diagnosed with pulmonary and ocular sarcoidosis 2 years before having anemia and acute deterioration of renal function. FDG PET revealed diffuse increased FDG uptake in both kidneys and the spleen. Histopathologic examination of a renal biopsy sample revealed granulomatous interstitial nephritis with sarcoidosis. After methylprednisolone treatment, the abnormal FDG uptake resolved completely with improvement of symptoms. FDG PET is a

A 72-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of worsening polyarticular swelling pain. An F-FDG PET/CT was performed to evaluate the extent of a suspected gouty attack and to exclude any unexpected malignancy. The images showed multiple juxta-articular and subcutaneous foci of elevated F-FDG activity in both upper and lower extremities, including the hands, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, and feet. Diagnosis of an acute, severe gouty attack was eventually made. The patient responded well to antigouty therapy.

The intersection and syndemic interaction between the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) epidemics have global prevalence with devastating morbidity and massive mortality. Using FDG-PET imaging it was shown that in HIV-infected individuals, involvement of the head and neck precedes that of the chest and of the abdomen. The sequence of lymph node involvement observed suggests the existence of a diffusible activation mediator that may be targeted via therapeutic intervention strategies. Furthermore, the degree of FDG uptake proved directly related to viral load and inversel

OBJECTIVES: Physiological myocardial uptake of 18F-FDG during positron emission tomography can mask adjacent abnormal uptake in mediastinal malignancy and inflammatory cardiac diseases. Myocardial uptake is unpredictable and variable. This study evaluates the impact of a low-carbohydrate diet in reducing myocardial FDG uptake.
METHOD: Patients attending for clinically indicated oncological FDG PET were asked to have an "Atkins-style" low-carbohydrate diet (less than 3 g) the day before examination and an overnight fast. A total of 120 patients following low-carbohydrate diet plus overnight fa

Sarcoidosis is a multisystemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology. We report an unusual case of sarcoidosis in a woman presenting with cardiac sarcoidosis and massive splenomegaly with a familial history of cardiac sarcoidosis. Cardiac sarcoidosis was diagnosed based on electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, 18F-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET) and skin histological findings. We performed splenectomy to rule out malignant lymphoma, and histological findings confirmed sarcoidosis. After splenectomy, we initiated prednisolone therapy. After 20 months of diagnos
