Pathways to and factors associated with rape stigma experienced by rape survivors in South Africa: Analysis of baseline data from a rape cohort.

Rape stigma, both external and self-stigmatization (self-blame), is associated with adverse health outcomes. Understanding its origins and r … other trauma, emotional intimate partner violence (IPV), having less gender equitable attitudes and food insecurity were significantly associated with medium or high versus low levels of stigma. Internal and external stigma were significantly associated with each other. Women who had been previously raped reported less stigma. The SEM showed a direct path between …

Changes in resource insecurity, sexual and mental health among young women after Kenya's 2024 heavy rains and floods.

OBJECTIVES: Kenya's 2024 heavy rains and flooding resulted in agricultural devastation and displacement. We assessed resource insecurity, sexual health, and mental health differences across two time points, during this heavy rain/flooding and at 6-month follow-up under dry conditions, among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Kenya. METHODS: We conducted surveys at Time 1 (T1) (heavy rains/flooding, June 2024) and Time 2 (T2) (dry conditions, November 2024) with a non-random sample of AGYW aged 16-24 years in Nairobi and Kisumu. We conducted longitudinal analyses using generalized esti

Supporting Holistic Health and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Risk Reduction Among Young Native Females Prior to Pregnancy: A Qualitative Exploration.

AI/AN communities are disproportionately impacted by food insecurity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Decreasing the risk of GDM can interrupt the intergenerational cycle of diabetes in AI/AN families, and can decrease diabetes-related health disparities. The goal of this study was to explore ways of supporting holistic health and reducing the risk of GDM among young American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) females prior to pregnancy. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with adult AI/AN women (>18 years) who had GDM or who have young female relatives (e.g., daughters) (n = 41), …

The heart of the matter: a re-iteration of the role of the social determinants of health in addressing health inequity in Central Australia.

The persisting life-expectancy 'gap' between First Nations and non-First Nations Australians is fundamentally driven by the social determinants of health. These include income and social protection, access to adequate housing and food security, among others. These factors are particularly prominent in Central Australia. Inadequate housing has led to some of the highest rates of Streptococcus pyogenes infection in the world, which in turn drives an extremely high prevalence of rheumatic heart disease. Food insecurity and inadequate social protection manifesting as energy insecurity result in in…

Intersecting Relationships of Psychosocial and Structural Syndemic Problems Among People with HIV in South Africa: Using Network Analysis to Identify Influential Problems.

In South Africa, little is known about interrelationships between syndemic problems among people with HIV (PWH). A better understanding of s … atistically significant associations. The most central problems were depression, substance use, and food insecurity. Three clusters of syndemics were identified: mood and violence; structural factors; and behavioral factors. Depression, substance use, and food insecurity commonly co-occur among PWH in sub-Saharan Africa and interfere with HIV outcomes. Network an …

Early Childhood Obesity Risk Factors: Socioeconomic Adversity, Family Dysfunction, Offspring Distress, and Junk Food Self-Medication.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To explore the sequence and interaction of infancy and early childhood risk factors, particularly relating to disturbances in the social environment, and how the consequences of such exposures can promote weight gain and obesity. RECENT FINDINGS: This review will argue that socioeconomic adversity is a key upstream catalyst that sets the stage for critical midstream risk factors such as family strain and dysfunction, offspring insecurity, stress, emotional turmoil, low self-esteem, and poor mental health. These midstream risk factors, particularly stress and emotional turmo

Impacts of COVID-19 on global poverty, food security, and diets: Insights from global model scenario analysis.

This study assesses the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on poverty, food insecurity, and diets, accounting for the complex links between the crisis and the incomes and living costs of vulnerable households. Key elements are impacts on labor supply, effects of social distancing, shifts in demand from services involving close contact, increases in the cost of logistics in food and other supply chains, and reductions in savings and investment. These are examined using IFPRI's global general equilibrium model linked to epidemiological and household models. The simulations suggest tha…

PrEP Engagement in a Sample of Youth Experiencing Homelessness in New York City: A Brief Report.

Few studies have examined pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) engagement among youth experiencing homelessness (YEH), despite high HIV risk. We collected data using a cross-sectional survey from YEH ages 16-24 in New York City (NYC). We assessed YEH awareness, willingness to use, and plans to take PrEP. We conducted primarily descriptive and bivariate analyses for this brief report and found that 49 (48%) identified as LGBTQ + and 74 (66%) reported food insecurity. The majority of our sample (69%) reported health insurance coverage. In total, 55 (45%) had heard of PrEP before the survey, 78 (73%) …

Spillover Effects of an Agricultural Livelihood Intervention Among People Living with HIV on Community Empowerment in Kenya.

Food insecurity and HIV are closely intertwined and together have compounded effects on morbidity and mortality. Additionally, food insecurity and HIV have combined effects on weakening communities, including causing decreased economic capacity, decreased ability of families to care for children, and intergenerational transfer of poverty. Livelihood interventions that improve food security are promising approaches for improving the quality of life of people living with HIV, and they may also have profound effects on the strength and stability of communities. We conducted a cluster randomized c…

Policy options to increase the provision of free school meals in England: a qualitative exploration of the challenges of policy implementation through stakeholder interviews.

OBJECTIVE: Rising levels of household food insecurity in England, and associated health and well-being impacts for children, have led to calls to expand access to free school meals (FSM). Policymakers have been hesitant to extend provision of FSM due to concerns surrounding acceptability, affordability and implementation challenges. The most effective strategies for expanding FSM are not yet fully understood. This work aims to fill this gap by examining school meal policy from the perspective of multiple stakeholders, to provide actionable recommendations for policies that could expand school …

Interventions for positive parental feeding practices in low-income households: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Parental feeding practices play a critical role in shaping children's dietary behaviours and self-regulation during early childhood. These practices are particularly important in low-income households, where structural constraints, including household food insecurity (HFI), may influence how feeding guidance is implemented and sustained. Although a growing number of interventions aim to promote positive parental feeding practices, there remains limited synthesis of how contemporary programmes are conceptualised, designed, and delivered within low-income contexts, including the exte…
