Exploring the association between sweet liking and treatment response to naltrexone in patients with alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Response to naltrexone varies among individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Studies in Western populations have linked the sweet-liking (SL) phenotype, reflecting an individual's hedonic response to sweet taste, to improved outcomes with naltrexone. However, cultural and ethnic variations in SL raise questions about the generalizability of this association. This exploratory investigation examined the relationship between SL phenotype and naltrexone treatment outcomes in Taiwanese patients with AUD. METHODS: Patients with DSM-5-defined severe AUD who had completed alcohol with

Nutritional Dimensions of Sports Tourism: Runners' Encounters with Polish Local Food Cultures.

Background/Objectives: Although nutrition is widely recognized as a key factor in post-event recovery in sports, little attention has been given to how its cultural and social dimensions-embodied in local cuisine-intersect with the needs of traveling athletes, for whom food often also serves as a medium of cultural immersion and sensory exploration. Poland, with its rich regional culinary traditions and numerous international running events, offers a compelling context in which to explore these interactions. This study aims to understand the role of local cuisine in the experiences of foreign

Association of dietary preferences with primary ovarian insufficiency (POI): a mendelian randomization-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a critical cause of infertility and is increasingly recognized as a complex metabolic disorder. Dietary factors may influence the risk of POI, but causal relationships remain unclear. METHODS: We conducted an MR study using genetic instrumental variables for 83 dietary preferences from the UK Biobank, with the Inverse Variance Weighted method as the primary analysis. RESULTS: Consumption of butter and full-fat dairy products was strongly associated with an increased risk of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI). Women who consumed butter had n

Daily fat intake is associated with basolateral amygdala response to high-calorie food cues and appetite for high-calorie food.

OBJECTIVES: Animal studies have indicated that fat intake mediates amygdala activation, which in turn promotes fat intake, while amygdala activation increases the preference for fat and leads to increased fat intake. However, the association among fat intake, amygdala activation, and appetite for high-calorie foods in humans remains unclear. Thus, to examine this association, we conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment. METHODS: Fifty healthy-weight adults (18 females; mean age: 22.9 ± 3.02 years) were included. Participants were shown images of high-calorie and low

Bitter and sweet taste perception: relationships to self-reported oral hygiene habits and oral health status in a survey of Australian adults.

BACKGROUND: Oral health, an essential part of general health and well-being, is influenced by multiple factors, including oral hygiene habits and dietary factors. Dietary preferences are influenced by variation in taste perceptions and threshold tasting. Polymorphisms in specific genes for sweet and bitter taste receptors and bitter taste perception have been associated with dental caries. However, taste is complex with multiple receptors, each with multiple potential polymorphisms contributing to taste perception as well as social, cultural, and environmental influences. Additionally, these a

Fat preference and fat intake in individuals with and without anorexia nervosa.

Fat restriction is a characteristic eating behavior among individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), and laboratory meal studies demonstrate restricted fat intake among low-weight patients. The Geiselman Food Preference Questionnaire-I© (FPQ) is a validated self-report measure that yields a fat preference score (FPS). Prior research reported that patients with AN had a significantly lower FPS than did healthy control (HC) participants. The goal of the current study was to compare self-reported fat preference (FPS) to fat intake (multi-item meal (MIM) study) in low-weight ANs and HCs. Specific aim

Dietary Intake is Positively Associated with Cognitive Function of a Chinese Older Adults Sample.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between cognitive function and dietary intake in older adults was under-studied in China. This study examined this relationship in a Chinese sample while controlling for the effects of sleep quality and socio demographic confounders. METHODS: The sample consisted of 340 Chinese older adults (age > 60) who were randomly selected from Wuhan city in central China. Cognitive function was assessed by the Mini-mental State Examination [MMSE], sleep quality by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI], and dietary intake by frequencies of intake of meat products, fruits,

Effects of cannabidiol in males and females in two different rat models of depression.

The current study explores the therapeutic potential of Cannabidiol (CBD), a compound in the Cannabis plant, using both sexes of 2 "depressive-like" genetic models, Wistar Kyoto (WKY) and Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) rats. Rats ingested CBD (30 mg/kg) orally. In the saccharin preference test, following a previous report of a pro-hedonic effect of CBD in male WKY, we now found similar results in female WKY. CBD also decreased immobility in the forced swim test in males (both strains) and in female WKY. These findings suggest a role for CBD in treating mental disorders with prominent symptoms o

Negative stereotypes of the Scottish diet: A qualitative analysis of deep-fried Mars bar references in bestselling newspapers in Scotland, 2011-14.

The Scottish diet is associated in the UK media and popular discourse with unhealthy deep-fried foods. In addition to the stereotype's negative effects on perceptions of Scottish food, culture and people, there is evidence that the stereotype of the Scottish diet has negative effects on food behaviour and public health in Scotland, having been shown to encourage consumption of deep-fried foods and discourage positive dietary change. The most notorious deep-fried food associated with Scotland is the deep-fried Mars bar (DFMB), arguably invented in Stonehaven (near Aberdeen), and first reported

Liking compared with wanting for high- and low-calorie foods in anorexia nervosa: aberrant food reward even after weight restoration.

BACKGROUND: Recent frameworks for understanding food rewards recognize the role of separable affective and motivational processes (liking and wanting) in driving human eating behavior. Separate assessments of liking and wanting may aid in understanding the complex eating-related behaviors seen in anorexia nervosa (AN). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine separately liking and wanting for foods of different energy densities in women at different stages of AN and in healthy volunteers at both an implicit and an explicit level. DESIGN: Explicit liking and wanting responses to high-

Effect of chronic administration of tamoxifen and/or estradiol on feeding behavior, palatable food and metabolic parameters in ovariectomized rats.

Tamoxifen (TAM) is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) used in the treatment of breast cancer; however many women complain of weight gain during TAM treatment. The anorectic effects of estradiol (E) and TAM are well known, although the effects of E on the consumption of palatable food are controversial and there is no information regarding the effects of TAM on palatable food consumption. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic treatment with estradiol and/or tamoxifen on feeding behavior in ovariectomized rats exposed to standard chow and palatable foods (Fr

Maternal feeding practices associated with food neophobia.

The current study examined the associations between children's and mother's food neophobia and parental feeding practices. Eighty-five mothers of 3- to 12-year old children (M=5.7 years; 52% girls) completed a questionnaire online about food neophobia and feeding practices. Mothers with children high in food neophobia used more restriction for health and less monitoring. Mothers with food neophobic children and mothers who were themselves food neophobic also reported that they do not make healthy foods readily available for their children. Mothers high in food neophobia also used more restrict

Taste damage (otitis media, tonsillectomy and head and neck cancer), oral sensations and BMI.

Otitis media and tonsillectomy are associated with enhanced palatability of energy dense foods and with weight gain. Otitis media can damage the chorda tympani nerve (CN VII); tonsillectomy and head and neck radiation treatment can damage the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX). Both of these nerves function prominently in taste sensation. The present study utilizes these sources of damage to study central interactions among the nerves that mediate oral sensations. Mild damage restricted to one of these nerves can actually intensify sensations evoked from undamaged nerves (i.e., whole-mouth taste,

Vitamin status and needs for people with stages 3-5 chronic kidney disease.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often experience a decline in their nutrient intake starting at early stages of CKD. This reduction in intake can affect both energy-producing nutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, as well as vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Knowledge of the burden and bioactivity of vitamins and their effect on the health of the patients with CKD is very incomplete. However, without sufficient data, the use of nutritional supplements to prevent inadequate intake may result in either excessive or insufficient intake of micronutrients for people

Carbohydrate supplementation and sex differences in fuel selection during exercise.

PURPOSE: To compare the effects of a high-CHO diet (80% CHO) and glucose ingestion (2 g x kg(-1)) during exercise (120 min, 57% VO2max) on fuel selection in women taking (W+OC) or not (W-OC) oral contraceptives and in men (six in each group). METHODS: Substrate oxidation was measured using indirect respiratory calorimetry in combination with a tracer technique to compute the oxidation of exogenous (13C-glucose) and endogenous CHO. RESULTS: In the control situation (mixed diet with water ingestion during exercise), the percent contribution to the energy yield (%En) of CHO oxidation was higher

Genetic variance contributes to ingestive processes: a survey of eleven inbred mouse strains for fat (Intralipid) intake.

Genetic variation across inbred and outbred mouse strains have been observed for intake of sweet solutions, salts, bitter tastants and a high-fat diet. Our laboratory recently reported marked strain differences in the amounts and/or percentages of kilocalories of sucrose consumed among 11 inbred and one outbred mouse strains exposed to a wide range of nine sucrose concentrations (0.0001-5%) in two-bottle 24-h preference tests. To assess whether differences in fat intake were similarly associated with genetic variation, the present study examined intake of chow, water and an emulsified fat sour

Anterograde and retrograde amnesia after lesions to frontal cortex in rats.

A socially acquired food-preference test was used to assess effects of lesions to the frontal cortex on anterograde and retrograde memory in rats. In Experiment 1, there was no effect of lesion when rats were administered a two-choice test in which the target food was to be selected in the presence of a single distractor. In Experiment 2, a three-choice memory test was administered in which the target food was presented along with two equally palatable alternatives. In the latter test, lesioned groups displayed anterograde amnesia that increased with the length of the interval between postoper

Assessment of cognitive variable relevant to cognitive behavioral perspectives on anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Several cognitive behavioral writers have described cognitions regarding food, eating, and body weight as central to the psychopathology of anorexia and bulimia. However, only preliminary efforts have been undertaken to develop valid and reliable assessment methodologies for these cognitions. This paper reviews the current status of self-report questionnaires, thought-sampling procedures, and methods from cognitive psychology as applied to the assessment of eating disorder cognitions.

Effects of neonatal ethanol exposure on saccharin consumption.

Prenatal ethanol exposure has been associated with alterations in a variety of sexually dimorphic behaviors in rats. This study examined the effects of neonatal ethanol exposure on saccharin consumption, a sexually dimorphic behavior in rats. Subjects were Sprague-Dawley rats that were artificially reared (AR) from postnatal day (PN) 4-PN12 through gastrostomy tubes with ethanol exposure limited to PN4-PN10. The AR groups included two ethanol doses (6 g/kg/day and 4 g/kg/day) and an isocaloric maltose-dextrin control. A sham surgery control group was also included. The AR subjects were returne
