Sustainable Insect-Based Diets in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review of Prevalence, Acceptability and Impact on Nutritional Status.

Malnutrition-including undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and overweight-remains a major public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa, largely driven by food insecurity. Edible insects have been proposed as a sustainable, nutrient-dense dietary alternative with potential to improve food security and nutritional outcomes. This review analyses studies published until January 2024 in PubMed and Google Scholar assessing the prevalence, acceptability and nutritional impact of insect-based diets in sub-Saharan Africa. Thirteen original studies, predominantly qualitative, conducted in 8 of 47 …

Validation of the Food Safe Zone questionnaire for families of individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder, is characterized by hyperphagia and significant behavioral problems. Hyperphagic individuals with PWS are chronically hungry yet rarely feel sated, and often engage in food-seeking behaviors. To avoid life-threatening obesity in their children, families implement food security strategies (e.g., locking food sources, constant supervision around food, alerting others). Although widely used, these strategies have yet to be systematically examined. We thus developed and analyzed the psychometric properties of a new mea…

Energy input and food output: The energy imbalance across regional agrifood systems.

Biomass was the principal energy source in preindustrial societies; their agriculture provided more energy than it required. Thus, the energy return on energy investment (EROEI) needed to be >1. Recent studies have indicated that this may not be the case for modern industrialized agrifood systems (AFSs). Although the green revolution radically improved agricultural yields, it came at the expense of increased energy inputs, mainly in the form of fossil fuels. AFSs relying on external energy pose a food security risk, an economic issue for agricultural producers, and an environmental issue for a…

Recent advances in microbial laccases for aflatoxins control: Identification, modification, and application.

Aflatoxins (AFs) are prevalent carcinogens whose multiple toxicity threatens global food and feed security. Although previous studies have confirmed the ability of microorganisms and enzymes to degrade AFs, microbial laccase remains one of the most intensively investigated enzymes for aflatoxin transformation. Laccases are copper-containing oxidoreductases that catalyze the oxidation of aromatic and non-aromatic compounds. They have been widely employed in papermaking, environmental protection, food processing, and biosensors, and are highly valued for their environmentally friendly properties

The combined effect of decreased stomatal density and aperture increases water use efficiency in maize.

Stomata play a crucial role in balancing carbon dioxide uptake and water vapor loss, thereby regulating plant water use efficiency (WUE). Enhancing WUE is important for sustainable agriculture and food security, particularly for crops such as maize (Zea mays L.), as climate change and growing global food demand exacerbate limitations on water availability. Genetic factors controlling stomatal density and levels of the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) in leaves, which affect stomatal aperture, are key determinants of stomatal conductance (gs) and intrinsic WUE (iWUE). In this study, we demonst…

Europium functionalized porphyrin-based metal-organic framework heterostructure and hydrogel for visual ratiometric fluorescence sensing of sulfonamides in foods.

Protecting human health and ensuring food security require the swift and accurate detection of sulfonamides (SAs) residues in foods. Herein, we proposed an Eu-postfunctionalized bimetallic porphyrin metal-organic framework (PCN-221(Zr/Ce)@Eu-DPA-H4btec) synthesized solvothermally for fluorescence sensing. The PCN-221(Zr/Ce)@Eu-DPA-H4btec fluorescent sensor demonstrated excellent stability and high selectivity to SAs, and the detection limits of sulfamethazine (SM2), sulfamerazine (SMR), and sulfamethoxydiazine (SMD) were as low as 56 nmol/L, 45 nmol/L, and 56 nmol/L, respectively. The PCN-221(…
