Movement Rate and Brain-Muscle Coupling in Male Footballers With and Without Hamstring Injury History.

BACKGROUND: High-speed actions constitute an important mechanism of hamstring strain injuries (HSIs) in football. These actions have a strong supraspinal base, and changes in brain activity have been noted in other musculoskeletal injuries; however, there is a lack of information about changes in brain-muscle coupling in footballers with HSI history. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether movement speed and brain-muscle activity differ between players with and without HSI history during a high-speed knee movement task. HYPOTHESIS: Footballers with previous HSI will show decreased kn…

Effect of peak intensity periods on temporary fatigue and recovery kinetics in professional male football.

We analysed peak 1-, 2- and 5-min periods and the associated 5-min recovery period in matches from three consecutive seasons in the Danish Superliga. A semi-automatic multicamera system was used to collect high-speed running distance (≥5.5 m/s; HSRD), sprint distance (≥7.0 m/s; SpD) and distance covered during intense acceleration (≥3 m/s2; AccD). Analysis included 479 players and 6042 to 9671 match observations using rolling average. Distances covered per minute during the peak periods were significantly higher than match averages: HSRD (207-772%), SpD (447-1793%), and AccD (383-1096%). Dista

Complete Distal Rupture of the Rectus Femoris in an Elite Football Player: A Non-operative Treatment.

Although muscle injuries represent the most frequent injury in professional football, isolated complete distal ruptures of the rectus femoris (RF) muscle are rare, and there is no consensus on their treatment and return to play (RTP). In this article, we report a clinical case of successful non-surgical management of an RF grade 4c muscle injury in a professional football player, in which the athlete was able to RTP 21 weeks after the injury, had no re-injury >1 year after RTP, and is playing at an elite level in the Portuguese Football First League.

Football Shoulder Pad Design and Its Effect on Head Kinematics in Shoulder-to-Helmet Impacts.

Shoulder-to-helmet (STH) impacts have been shown to cause approximately twenty percent of concussions in football yet little research has investigated shoulder pad design and STH impacts. This study aimed to characterize STH impacts and identify the effect of shoulder pad design on the struck head kinematics. Additional padding was added to a shoulder pad, and was then compared to an unmodified control shoulder pad. Participants performed a series of tests where they struck a helmeted Hybrid III dummy with both shoulder pad variations to compare struck head linear and rotational kinematics. Th…

Lumbar spine MRI findings in asymptomatic elite male academy footballers: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Understanding common MRI findings may allow clinicians to appreciate the sport-specific effects on the lumbar spine, and to discern clinically significant pathology. Prevalence data regarding radiological abnormalities seen during the surveillance of asymptomatic elite footballers is, therefore, important to help understand injury mechanisms and to prevent associated injuries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in the lumbar spines of asymptomatic elite male adolescent footballers. METHODS: A prospective case-series study was ca…

The Bounded Ending Effect in the Domain of Football Gambling: High Risks Are Not Always Preferred at the End.

Previous research has demonstrated that individuals present increased risk taking at the end of a series of gambles, a phenomenon called the ending effect. By using a large online football gambling data, we attempted to replicate the ending effect and tested the existence of a different pattern of increased risk taking at the ending. The results showed that at the end of a series of football gambles, bettors would take more risks, and options with lower risk would be preferred. In games without the interference of local bettors, the ending effect was found to be stronger than that of games wit…

Changes in White Matter of the Cervical Spinal Cord after a Single Season of Collegiate Football.

The involvement of the central nervous system (CNS), specifically the white matter tracts in the cervical spinal cord, was examined with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) following exposure to repetitive head acceleration events (HAEs) after a single season of collegiate football. Fifteen National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 football players underwent DTI of the cervical spinal cord (vertebral level C1-4) at pre-season (before any contact practices began) and post-season (within 1 week of the last regular season game) intervals. Helmet accelerometer data were also collected …

Influence of play type on the magnitude and number of head impacts sustained in youth American football.

The magnitude and number of head impacts experienced by young American football players are associated with negative brain health outcomes and may be affected by play-type strategies. The purpose of this research was to examine how play type affects the magnitude and number of head impacts in youth American tackle football. Head impacts were recorded for 30 games in the 5-9 age category and 30 games in the 9-14 age category. Impacts using physical and finite element models were conducted to determine the brain strain. Run plays had a higher head impact frequency in both age groups (p < 0.05). …

Factors Associated with Hip and Groin Pain in Elite Youth Football Players: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite hip and groin pain being commonly reported in elite youth football players, little evidence on risk factors exists. Risk factors in adult football players include reduced hip adductor strength and hip adductor/abductor strength ratios, and lower Copenhagen Hip and Groin Outcome Score (HAGOS) subscale scores. It is unknown if these factors are also predictive of pain development in youth football players. OBJECTIVE: To identify whether preseason hip adductor and abductor strength and HAGOS subscale scores of male and female elite youth football players are associated with i…

The Role of the Rhythm Step on Pro-Agility Test Performance in Division I Football Players.

Purpose: The pro-agility test is a common test in multiple sports. A common way to start is the crossover step (CS) where athletes start the drill by crossing one leg over the other. However, the rhythm step (RS), initiated by moving one foot medially before crossing the opposite foot over the first, may result in faster time. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the RS to the CS in the pro-agility test. Methods: Thirteen division I college football players (age 21 ± 1.5 years, mass 103.5 ± 18 kg, and stature 1.87 ± .078 m) were recruited to perform both step techniques. Video w…
