Intellectual functions and regional cerebral haemodynamics after extensive omental transplantation spread over both frontal lobes in childhood moyamoya disease.

Most accepted operations for childhood moyamoya disease have attempted to increase cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the ischaemic cortical areas … luation of regional cerebral haemodynamics after extensive omental transplantation spread over both frontal lobes performed as the initial management. In the past 10 years, 10 moyamoya patients less than 12 years of age consecutively underwent omental transplantation. The omental flap was spread over not only the symptomatic hemisphere but also the contralater …

Auditory and visual working memory performance in patients with frontal lobe damage and in schizophrenic patients with low scores on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test.

Impaired performance in the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) has frequently been postulated to be one typical feature indicating frontal dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia. From a functional point of view, impairments were attributed to a dysfunction of working memory. The present study compares the performance of groups of schizophrenic patients, groups of patients with acquired brain damage as well as normal controls on tasks involving visual and auditory working memory. Modified versions of Sternberg tasks were used varying the physical attributes of the material to be rehearsed i

Functional connectivity between the caudate nucleus and the frontal lobe and its association with executive functions in children and adolescents: a resting state fMRI study.

During childhood and adolescence, the human brain becomes structurally and functionally mature, affecting the development of various executive functions (EFs). The frontal lobe plays a significant role in managing a wide range of EFs from the understanding of the neurocognitive development of executive functioning. Along with the frontal lobe, the caudate nucleus (CN) is suggested to contribute to EFs. The frontal-subcortical circuit, which is a natural pathway connecting the basal ganglia to the frontal lobe, is suggested as a strongly associated circuit with EFs. Although significant functio…

Morphometric alterations of the gray matter of the frontal lobe during childhood in healthy children born prematurely. Repercussions of foetal and postnatal growth restriction.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To determine, in healthy children born prematurely with very low birth weight (VLBW), whether the cerebral morphometry of the frontal lobe is affected by foetal growth restriction (FGR) and extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR). SUBJECTS/METHODS: A magnetic resonance imaging study was performed of 117 children during childhood within a cohort of VLBW infants. A neuropsychological study was performed using the WISC-V test and the Child Behaviour Checklist scale. RESULTS: In children with FGR and EUGR, the volume of the lateral orbitofrontal cortex was reduced in both h…

First description of pseudohypoparathyroidism with frontal lobe calcification and normal serum calcium at the initial manifestation in an otherwise healthy seven-year-old girl.

Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is characterized by resistance to the peripheral action of parathyroid hormone. We present a case of a seven-year-old girl who was admitted at the service of Instituto Materno Infantil de Pernambuco, IMIP, with motor episodes affecting the arms. Her calcium level was normal. Computed tomography showed calcifications in frontal lobes and basal ganglia. After six years: calcium was 5.5 mg/dL; phosphorus, 8.3 mg/dL and serum parathyroid hormone was 1,318 pg/mL. Pseudohypoparathyroidism diagnosis was considered. This is the first description of a case of pseudohypopa…

Changes in cerebral blood oxygenation of the frontal lobe induced by direct electrical stimulation of thalamus and globus pallidus: a near infrared spectroscopy study.

OBJECTIVE: Blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) contrast functional MRI images show activated cortical areas by detecting a reduced concentration of deoxyhaemoglobin (deoxy-Hb) during neuronal activity; however, near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has shown various patterns of cerebral blood oxygenation (CBO) changes in the frontal lobe during cognitive tasks. To determine if various patterns of CBO changes occur in the frontal lobe when the brain is directly stimulated, changes in CBO in the frontal lobe induced by deep brain stimulation in patients with implanted electrodes were evaluated.…

Lateralized abnormality of high-energy phosphate and bilateral reduction of phosphomonoester measured by phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the frontal lobes in schizophrenia.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (one-dimensional chemical shift imaging) was used to measure membrane phospholipid metabolism and high-energy phosphate metabolism in the left and right frontal lobes of 27 schizophrenic patients. In the schizophrenic patients, the phosphomonoester peak area was decreased in bilateral frontal lobes compared with that in age-matched normal subjects. On the other hand, the peak area of beta-adenosine triphosphate was increased in the left frontal lobe in the schizophrenic group. The phosphocreatine peak area was increased in the left frontal lobe of schizophrenic …

Understanding the role of the frontal lobe in tool-use tasks: how much does it represent domain-general rather than domain-specific contribution?

When using novel tools with low semantic content, the left inferior-frontal-gyrus (IFG) plays a role. We argue that this activation is not purely specific to novel tool use but rather represents part of a cross-domain cognitive network supporting sequential planning processes. The IFG does not only manage information flow between distributed areas but functionally contributes by maintaining focus on the intended target state and supporting the processing, monitoring, and adjustment of steps needed to achieve that goal. These cognitive functions are particularly important when compensation for

Adult-onset cerebral X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy presenting with frontal lobe syndrome caused by a de novo ABCD1 gene mutation (c.1415_1416delAG, p.Gln472fs*83).

BACKGROUND: Globally, prisons are high-incidence settings for tuberculosis. Yet the role of prisons as reservoirs of M. tuberculosis, propagating epidemics through spillover to surrounding communities, has been difficult to measure directly. METHODS: To quantify the role of prisons in driving wider community M. tuberculosis transmission, we conducted prospective genomic surveillance in Central West Brazil from 2014 to 2019. We whole genome sequenced 1152 M. tuberculosis isolates collected during active and passive surveillance inside and outside prisons and linked genomes to detailed incarcer

The Association of Nocturnal Seizures and Interictal Cardiac/Central Autonomic Function in Frontal Lobe Epilepsy: Heart Rate Variability and Central Autonomic Network Analysis.

PURPOSE: Patients with epilepsy frequently experience autonomic dysfunction, closely related to sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP). SUDEP occurs most often at night or during sleep, and frequent nocturnal seizures are an established risk factor. This study investigated the influence of nocturnal seizures on autonomic dysfunction in epilepsy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) patients who performed 24-hour EEG monitoring. All participants were divided into nocturnal FLE (NFLE, > 90% of seizures occurring during sleep) or diurnal FLE (…

Medial Frontal Lobe Neurochemistry in Autism Spectrum Disorder is Marked by Reduced N-Acetylaspartate and Unchanged Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid and Glutamate + Glutamine Levels.

The nature of neurochemical changes in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains controversial. We compared medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) neurochemistry of twenty high-functioning children and adolescents with ASD without associated comorbidities and fourteen controls. We observed reduced total N-acetylaspartate (tNAA) and total creatine, increased Glx/tNAA but unchanged glutamate + glutamine (Glx) and unchanged absolute or relative gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA+) in the ASD group. Importantly, both smaller absolute and relative GABA+ levels were associated with worse communication skills and d

Extra-cerebral oxygenation influence on near-infrared-spectroscopy-determined frontal lobe oxygenation in healthy volunteers: a comparison between INVOS-4100 and NIRO-200NX.

INTRODUCTION: Frontal lobe oxygenation (Sc O2 ) is assessed by spatially resolved near-infrared spectroscopy (SR-NIRS) although it seems influenced by extra-cerebral oxygenation. We aimed to quantify the impact of extra-cerebral oxygenation on two SR-NIRS derived Sc O2 . METHODS: Multiple regression analysis estimated the influence of extra-cerebral oxygenation as exemplified by skin oxygenation (Sskin O2 ) on Sc O2 in 21 healthy subjects exposed to whole-body exercise in hypoxia (Fi O2  = 12%; n = 10) and normoxia (n = 12), whole-body heating, hyperventilation (n = 21), administration of nor…

A case of autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (ADNFLE) coexisting with pervasive developmental disorder harboring SCN1A mutation in addition to CHRNB2 mutation.

We report a case of autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (ADNFLE) with several characteristics distinct from previously reported cases, in which genetic studies identified mutations in two different genes. This case differed from typical ADNFLE with respect to the following: (1) slightly younger onset and refractory to antiepileptic drugs and (2) borderline intellectual functioning and coexistence of pervasive developmental disorder from infancy. Genetic testing revealed a novel mutation and a silent substitution in SCN1A (c.4285G>T, A1429S and c.4371G>C, silent) in addition to a…

Neuropathological discrepancy between Japanese Pick's disease without Pick bodies and frontal lobe degeneration type of frontotemporal dementia proposed by Lund and Manchester Group.

The concept of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) proposed by the Lund and Manchester group is useful because it distinguishes dementia with frontal and anterior temporal involvement from Alzheimer-type dementia. The classification and definition of FTD and related disorders, however, are controversial. One point of controversy is the neuropathology of the frontal lobe degeneration (FLD) type of FTD. The FLD type is described as having mild frontal and anterior temporal atrophy and no accompanying tau or ubiquitin pathology. We investigated cases of Japanese Pick's disease without Pick bodies (PB),…

A dual-site HD-tDCS of the left inferior frontal gyrus and inferior parietal lobe modulates picture-word naming performance in healthy individuals.

The selection of appropriate lexical entries constitutes a crucial stage in the process of speech production. The theories of lexical choice competition and the hypothesis of response exclusion both propose that inhibitory control might play a significant role in handling cognitive conflicts arising from lexical selection. Previous studies have utilized transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to enhance speech function in individuals by primarily targeting stimulation on the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). However, the effects of this intervention have been inconsistent in healthy in
