Eight patients (6 to 15 years of age) who had periorbital cellulitis and other complications of sinusitis were studied. Both ethmoid and maxillary sinusitis were present in four patients, frontal sinusitis in two, and ethmoid sinusitis and pansinusitis in one patient each. Subdural empyema occurred in four patients, in one case accompanied by cerebritis and brain abscess and in another by meningitis. Periorbital abscess was present in two children who had ethmoiditis. Alveolar abscess in the upper incisors was present in two children whose infection had spread to the maxillary and ethmoid sinu…

UNLABELLED: Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome (DDMS) is a rare disease which is clinically characterized by hemiparesis, seizures, facial asymmetry, and mental retardation. The classical radiological findings are cerebral hemiatrophy, calvarial thickening, and hyperpneumatization of the frontal sinuses. This disease is a rare entity, and it mainly presents in childhood. Adult presentation of DDMS is unusual and has been rarely reported in the medical literature.
KEY MESSAGES: DDMS is a rare disease of childhood. However, it should be kept in mind as a diagnostic possibility in an adult who presen

Traditional management of mucoceles involve drainage using Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) and if required an external approach. These techniques may dramatically alter the normal anatomy and function of the sinuses and are associated with significant complications. Balloon dilatation of the sinus ostia is a minimally invasive technique that has been licensed for use in chronic sinusitis. We report the use of this novel technique in the management of a frontal sinus mucocele in a 47-year old female. The frontal sinus was successfully cannulated, dilated and drained. The patient made

BACKGROUND: Complications and local extension of dentogenous and paranasal sinus infections most often involve the periorbit and frontal cranium. Because of the widespread use of antibiotics, intracranial extension of maxillofacial sinusitis is rarely seen today. Nevertheless, the clinician must be aware of the potential for these complications, because late recognition of this condition and delay in treatment can increase morbidity and mortality rates.
CASE REPORT: A case report of sinogenic intracranial complications is presented, with sinogenic empyema, cerebritis, and subdural empyema. Th

The system of the paranasal sinuses morphologically represents one of the most complex parts of the equine body. A clear understanding of spatial relationships is needed for correct diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this study was to describe the anatomy and volume of equine paranasal sinuses using three-dimensional (3D) reformatted renderings of computed tomography (CT) slices. Heads of 18 cadaver horses, aged 2-25 years, were analyzed by the use of separate semi-automated segmentation of the following bilateral paranasal sinus compartments: rostral maxillary sinus (Sinus maxillaris ros

Ninety-three human skulls (80 adults and 13 children) have been examined and the extent of thin bone in the party walls between the orbit and the frontal, ethmoidal and maxillary sinuses has been assessed. Translucent bone is most often present in the lateral wall of the ethmoidal labyrinth and least often in the floor of the frontal sinus. In children such bone is present significantly less often in the roof of the maxillary sinus (P less than 0.001) than in adults. Computerized tomography scans and clinical data from 6 patients with orbital cellulitis were reviewed. In one of these an infero

A 63-year-old female with Graves' disease and chronic sinusitis presented with acute left orbital pain and proptosis five years after bilateral orbital decompression and sinus surgery. Imaging revealed bilateral frontal sinus opacification, frontoethmoidal mucoceles and left subperiosteal mass. Presence of an optic neuropathy drove emergent management with intravenous antibiotics and orbitotomy with exploration. Intra-operatively, a left orbital abscess and left frontal sinus purulence were drained. The patient regained her vision with relief of proptosis and pain.

Obliteration of the frontal sinus may be necessary for the treatment of chronic sinusitis, infectious complications, trauma, and benign and malignant neoplasms. Hydroxyapatite cement (HAC) is a relatively new material that is approved for the repair of cranial defects. HAC has been successfully used to obliterate the frontal sinus in 19 patients with few minor complications and the avoidance of donor site morbidity. Compared with other alloplastic materials, HAC has the advantages of easy use, biocompatibility, and osseointegration.

Mucocoeles of the paranasal sinuses most commonly occur in the frontal or anterior ethmoidal sinuses. We report two rare cases of mucocoele of the maxillary sinus and describe the presentation, investigations and treatment. A review of the literature on this rare clinical entity is included, with specific reference to diagnostic imaging to distinguish mucocoeles from neoplastic sinus disease.

Brain abscesses caused by sinusitis are rare in the antibiotic era. The purpose of the current manuscript was to report a rare case of a brain abscess located mainly in the frontal lobe after sinusitis, which was initially thought to be meningitis or encephalitis. A 39-year-old man was transferred to our hospital from another neighbouring hospital with tonic-clonic seizures, severe headache, and purulent nasal secretions. For one week, he was taking antibiotics for sinusitis. The computed tomography indicated lesions in the right sinuses but not in the parenchymal brain and thus antibiotics al

INTRODUCTION: Functional endonasal endoscopic surgery is a frequent surgical procedure among otorhinolaryngologists. In 2014, the European Society of Rhinology published the "European Position Paper on the Anatomical Terminology of the Internal Nose and Paranasal Sinuses", aiming to unify the terms in the English language. We do not yet have a unified terminology in the Portuguese language.
OBJECTIVE: Transcultural adaptation of the anatomical terms of the nose and paranasal cavities of the "European Anatomical Terminology of the Internal Nose and Paranasal Sinuses" to Portuguese.
METHODS: A

The volume of literature on frontal sinus surgery suggests that the success of surgery to cure frontal sinus pathology is inversely proportional to the total number of techniques described. In an attempt to develop an effective means of treating acute and chronic frontal sinusitis, including iatrogenic naso frontal communication obstruction, an endoscopic stenting procedure has evolved. This method might be contemplated, in selected patients, as the preferred surgery or a useful low morbidity alternative, to more invasive traditional frontal sinus surgery. A high degree of technical difficulty…

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to determine whether inward or outward movement of the secretions in the paranasal sinuses due to nose blowing after nasal decongestion has any effect on the paranasal sinus computed tomography (CT) images in patients with sinusitis and to asses whether nose blowing may result in misdiagnosis or overdiagnosis in radiological evaluation of sinusitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients with chronic sinusitis were evaluated in an academic tertiary care hospital and data were collected prospectively. After coronal sinus computed tomography scans were performed at 1

Frontal and/or maxillary sinusitis frequently originates with pathologic processes of the ethmoid sinuses. This clinical association is explained by the close anatomical relationship between the frontal and maxillary sinuses and the ethmoid sinus, since developmental trajectories place the ethmoid in a strategic central position within the nasal complex. The advent of optical endoscopes has permitted improved visualization of these spaces, leading to a renaissance in intranasal sinus surgery. Advancing patient care has consequently driven the need for the proper and accurate anatomical descrip

Malignant lymphoma of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity is very rare and can mimic those of infectious, non-lymphomatous neoplastic and granulomatous process in their initial presentation, thus delaying its diagnosis. This report describes a case of unilateral frontal sinus B-cell lymphoma presenting as Pott's puffy tumour. Key features to differentiate the two conditions are discussed. A 61-year-old woman presented with 4 weeks history of a gradually enlarging right-sided forehead swelling, which was smooth and firm with no tenderness, fluctuation or overlying skin changes. Mucoceles are retention cysts of the paranasal sinuses, specially developed on the anterior ethmoid and frontal sinuses and seldom seen on the maxillary cavity, as was the reported case. The authors underline the bone deformities sometimes seen and the difficulties when interpreting the meaning of x-ray records, both circumstances leading, from time to time, to the suspicion of a malignant tumor.
