Tinnitus, characterized by phantom sound perception, is a highly disruptive condition lacking clearly effective treatments. Its complex neural mechanisms are not fully elucidated. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a promising neuroimaging tool well-suited for assessing tinnitus due to its quietness, portability, and ability to directly measure cortical hemodynamic responses. This study timely summarizes the recent applications of fNIRS in investigating tinnitus pathology, correlating neuroimaging biomarkers with symptom severity, and evaluating treatment efficacy. Further studie

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Neuroimaging is an essential tool for the diagnosis and management of brain tumors.
RECENT FINDINGS: Advances in neuroimaging have allowed for noninvasive visualization of tumors and have changed how brain tumors are diagnosed and treated. Presurgical planning with the use of functional MRI (fMRI) and diffusion tensor MRI helps to preserve eloquent regions of the brain and fiber tracts, thereby decreasing patients' postsurgical morbidity. With the use of susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) filtered phase images, diffusion-weighted studies, and perfusion imaging techniques

Classified as a trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia, cluster headache is characterized by recurrent short-lived excruciating pain attacks, which are concurrent with autonomic signs. These clinical features have led to the assumption that cluster headache's pathophysiology involves central nervous system structures, including the hypothalamus. In the past decade, neuroimaging studies have confirmed such clinically derived theory by uncovering in vivo neuronal changes located in the inferior posterior hypothalamus. Using a variety of neuro-imaging techniques (functional , biochemical , and structur

Functional magnetic resonance imaging is a new neuroimaging method for probing the intact, alert, human brain. With this tool, brain activity that has been hidden can now be measured. Recent advances in measuring and understanding human neural responses underlying motion, color, and pattern perception are reviewed. In individual human brain, we can now identify the positions of several retinotopically organized visual areas; measure retinotopic organization within these areas; identify the location of a motion-sensitive region in individual brains; measure responses associated with contrast, c

Adolescent borderline personality disorder (aBPD) is linked to severe psychological problems and social dysfunction in the affected adolescents. However, the neural bases of this disorder are still poorly understood. The objective of this review is to summarize the current understanding of brain structural and functional alterations identified by neuroimaging methods and to propose future research directions. This systematic review identified widespread alterations of three main brain networks in aBPD, i.e., the Central Executive Network, the Default Mode Network, and the Affective Network. We

Cerebral toxoplasmosis is one of the most common opportunistic infections among AIDS patients. Clinical and neuroimaging manifestations are diverse and non-specific, resulting in frequent delayed diagnosis and even misdiagnosis, leading to neurological impairment, coma, and death. In addition to clinical and serological examinations, multimodal neuroimaging is indispensable for early diagnosis and subsequent treatment evaluation. Indeed, functional magnetic resonance imaging technologies and positron emission tomography provide complementary information for early diagnosis and treatment, which

Research into the neurofunctional mechanisms of psychopathy has gathered momentum over the last years. Previous neuroimaging studies have identified general changes in brain activity of psychopaths. In an exploratory meta-analysis, we here investigated the neural correlates of impaired moral cognition in psychopaths. Our analyses replicated general effects in the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, lateral prefrontal cortex, fronto-insular cortex, and amygdala, which have been reported recently. In addition, we found aberrant brain activity in the midbrain and inferior parietal cortex. Our prelimin

Behavioral and emotional dysregulation in childhood may be understood as prodromal to adult psychopathology. Additionally, there is a critical need to identify biomarkers reflecting underlying neuropathological processes that predict clinical/behavioral outcomes in youth. We aimed to identify such biomarkers in youth with behavioral and emotional dysregulation in the Longitudinal Assessment of Manic Symptoms (LAMS) study. We examined neuroimaging measures of function and white matter in the whole brain using 80 youth aged 14.0 (s.d.=2.0) from three clinical sites. Linear regression using the L

OBJECTIVE: The nature of changes in brain activation related to good recovery of arm function after stroke is still unclear. While the notion that this is a reflection of neuronal plasticity has gained much support, confounding by compensatory strategies cannot be ruled out. We address this issue by comparing brain activity in recovered patients 6 months after stroke with healthy controls.
METHODS: We included 20 patients with upper limb paresis due to ischemic stroke and 15 controls. We measured brain activation during a finger flexion-extension task with functional MRI, and the relationship

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder whose etiopathogenesis, according to various neuroimaging studies, seems to be linked to selective dysfunctions in regions within the cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical circuit. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are the first-line therapy for OCD but their neurobiological effects on the brain is only partially understood. Therefore, the aim of this review is to highlight structural and functional brain imaging modifications induced by SSRIs treatment.

Migraine without aura (MWoA) is a major neurological disorder with unsatisfactory adherence to current medications. Acupuncture has emerged as a promising method for treating MWoA. However, the brain mechanism underlying acupuncture is yet unclear. The present study aimed to examine the effects of acupuncture in regulating brain connectivity of the key regions in pain modulation. In this study, MWoA patients were recruited and randomly assigned to 4 weeks of real or sham acupuncture. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected before and after the treatment.

Previous functional neuroimaging studies imply a crucial role of the superior temporal regions (e.g., superior temporal sulcus: STS) for processing of dynamic faces and bodies. However, little is known about the cortical processing of moving faces and bodies in infancy. The current study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to directly compare cortical hemodynamic responses to dynamic faces (videos of approaching people with blurred bodies) and dynamic bodies (videos of approaching people with blurred faces) in infants' brain. We also examined the body-inversion effect in 5- to 8…

Multi-Voxel Pattern Analysis (MVPA) is a well established tool to disclose weak, distributed effects in brain activity patterns. The generalization ability is assessed by testing the learning model on new, unseen data. However, when limited data is available, the decoding success is estimated using cross-validation. There is general consensus on assessing statistical significance of cross-validated accuracy with non-parametric permutation tests. In this work we focus on the false positive control of different permutation strategies and on the statistical power of different cross-validation sch
