Integrative multi-omics analysis uncovers the critical role of plant-derived ferulic acid influencing the occurrence of tomato Fusarium foot rot disease.

Fusarium foot rot, caused by Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc., is a major threat to tomato production resulting in a tremendous loss of yield. The interaction between tomato and F. solani has not been well studied. Here we apply an integrative approach with physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analysis to investigate the molecular basis of tomato defense responses to F. solani infection. Pathogen-infected plants have reduced leaf chlorophyll fluorescence, plant elongation, stem thickness and root growth compared to non-infected control. Transcriptome analysis reveals 5654 differentially…

Reassessment of Species Boundaries in the Fusarium oxysporum Species Complex: Insights from Korean Isolates Using Multilocus Phylogenetics, GCPSR, and Coalescent-Based Approaches.

The Fusarium oxysporum species complex (FOSC) comprises globally distributed fungi exhibiting diverse ecological lifestyles, including plant pathogenic, endophytic, saprotrophic, and opportunistic associations. However, species boundaries within the complex remain controversial due to limited genetic divergence, morphological similarity, and incongruence among gene genealogies. In this study, species diversity and evolutionary relationships within the FOSC were reassessed using multilocus phylogenetic analyses, the Genealogical Concordance Phylogenetic Species Recognition (GCPSR) concept, and …

Antifungal mechanisms of volatile organic compounds and lactic acid produced by Lactiplantibacillus pentosus and their biocontrol application in fresh corn against Fusarium graminearum.

Fusarium graminearum causes cereal spoilage and mycotoxin production. Currently, biocontrol microorganisms have emerged as a safe and promising strategy to manage the contamination of toxin-producing fungi in cereal grains. The primary objective was to elucidate the antifungal mechanism of an isolated strain of Lactiplantibacillus pentosus Q11 against F. graminearum and to evaluate the preservative effects of its cell-free supernatant (CFS) in fresh sweet corn. In vitro antifungal assays of L. pentosus Q11 showed strong antagonistic activity against F. graminearum, Aspergillus flavus, and Peni…

MeJA inhibits fungal growth and DON toxin production by interfering with the cAMP-PKA signaling pathway in the wheat scab fungus Fusarium graminearum.

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin primarily produced by Fusarium species, is commonly found in cereal grains and poses risks to human and animal health, as well as global grain trade. This study demonstrates that methyl jasmonate (MeJA), a natural plant hormone, inhibits the growth and conidiation of Fusarium graminearum. Importantly, MeJA significantly reduces DON production by suppressing TRI gene expression and toxisome formation. To explore the molecular mechanism, we identified MeJA-tolerant mutants, including a transcription factor MRT1 and cAMP-PKA pathway-related genes (FgGPA1 and FgSN…

Novel use of hyperbaric oxygen treatment for treatment-resistant disseminated Saksenaea and Fusarium in a patient on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO): a case report.

Filamentous soil moulds such as Saksenaea and Fusarium are angioinvasive fungi responsible for severe disseminated infections. Saksenaea causes zygomycosis, with disseminated cases having over ninety percent mortality. Fusarium, a hyphomycetes mould, can also cause disseminated infections in immunocompromised individuals, with high mortality. We describe the case of a normally healthy 20-year-old male who survived major traumatic injuries resulting from an aviation incident. He subsequently developed disseminated cutaneous zygomycetes (Saksenaea) and Fusarium infection with associated immunosu…

Surface-Imprinted Polysiloxane with Recognition Ability Based on an ITO Layer for Rapid Detection of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense by the Naked Eye.

Direct observation by the naked eye of fluorescence-stained microbes adsorbed on surface imprinted polymers (SIPs) is highly challenging and limited by speed, accuracy and the semiquantitative nature of the method. In this study, we tested for the presence of spores of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense race 4 (Foc4), which cause severe banana Fusarium wilt disease and reduces the area of banana plants. This kind of spore can become dormant in soil, which means that the detection of secreted molecules (molecular imprinting) in soil may be inaccurate; detection methods such as polymerase chain r…

The plant response induced in wheat ears by a combined attack of Sitobion avenae aphids and Fusarium graminearum boosts fungal infection and deoxynivalenol production.

The pathogen Fusarium graminearum, producer of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol, and Sitobion avenae aphids both reside on wheat ears. We explored the influence of an earlier aphid infestation on the expression profile of specific molecular markers associated with F. graminearum infection. Using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis, we followed the expression of wheat defence genes on S. avenae infestation and explored the effect on a subsequent F. graminearum infection. This was performed by the assessment of disease symptoms, fungal biomass, mycotoxin production …

Involvement of the salicylic acid signaling pathway in the systemic resistance induced in Arabidopsis by plant growth-promoting fungus Fusarium equiseti GF19-1.

Plant growth-promoting fungi (PGPF) are effective biocontrol agents for a number of soil-borne diseases and are known for their ability to trigger induced systemic resistance (ISR). In this study, we investigated the mechanisms triggered by PGPF Fusarium equiseti GF19-1, which is known to increase pathogen resistance in plants, by using GF19-1 spores and the culture filtrate (CF) to treat the roots of Arabidopsis thaliana. Subsequently, the leaves were challenged with Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato DC3000 (Pst) bacteria. Arabidopsis plants treated with GF19-1 spores or the CF elicited ISR agai…
