Interventions to prevent violence against women and girls globally: a global systematic review of reviews to update the RESPECT women framework.

OBJECTIVE: The field of violence against women and girls (VAWG) prevention research has rapidly advanced, with ample evidence now demonstrating that VAWG is preventable. The aim of this systematic review of reviews is to update the evidence that underpins the RESPECT women framework with the newest available evidence from 2013 onward. METHODS: Academic and non-academic databases were searched using terms related to VAWG prevention (January 2013-April 2022). Evaluations had to have a target population of women or girls aged 10 and older. Data were extracted from included reviews, and AMSTAR-2

Adverse childhood experiences contribute to blood pressure changes in adulthood: a meta-analysis of over 750 000 adults.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) have been linked to various negative health outcomes in adulthood. However, their relationship with blood pressure remains inconclusive. We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate this association. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, and VIP from the databases' inception until 1 July 2023. We assessed the quality of included cross-sectional and cohort studies using the Agency of Healthcare Research an

A longitudinal analysis of peer-delivered permanent supportive housing: Impact of housing on mental and overall health in an ethnically diverse population.

Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is an evidence-based health intervention for persons experiencing homelessness, but the impact of individual mechanisms within this intervention on health requires further research. This study examines the longitudinal impact of the mechanism of supportive housing within a peer-delivered PSH model on overall health and mental health (as measured by psychological distress and self-report of bothersome symptoms) outcomes in an ethnically diverse population. The 237 participants in the study included persons who were homeless or at risk of homelessness and who a

"I had no safe space." Painful childhood experiences in the lives of men who are suicidal: A qualitative thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: In almost every country, more men die by suicide than women. While early-life adversity is a well-established suicide risk factor, much existing research is derived from female-dominated samples and based on quantitative work. OBJECTIVE: This study addresses a critical gap in the literature by examining the relationship between childhood harms and long-term suicide risk in men. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: 710 men worldwide who reported suicidal ideation or attempts in the past week or year. METHODS: Using a qualitative thematic analysis of open-text survey responses, participants

Unwanted experiences and support among men and trans individuals in the sex industry in Bangkok, Thailand.

Male and transgender sex workers in Thailand experience high rates of violence, social stigma, economic marginalization, as well as limited access to legal protections and support services. However, this population remains significantly understudied in trafficking and sex work literature and often lacks adequate support services. As such, through quantitative surveys with 100 sex workers assigned male at birth (73% transgender/third gender, 26% cisgender) in Bangkok, this research explores their experiences of harm, knowledge of support services, and barriers to accessing assistance. Over half

Empowering Youth Through Evidence: Applying Outcome Harvesting to Evaluate Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Advocacy in Ethiopia.

Adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) challenges, including gender inequality, child marriage, female genital mutilation/cutting and sexual and gender-based violence remain pervasive globally, particularly in Ethiopia. The Power to You(th) programme was designed to address these issues by centering youth voices and fostering transformative community change. This evaluation applied Outcome Harvesting, drawing on mixed quantitative and qualitative data, and employed a participatory approach that engages youth and stakeholders in identifying and verifying programme outcomes …

Theoretical Mediators of RealConsent: A Web-Based Sexual Violence Prevention and Bystander Education Program.

This study examined the process by which a web-based sexual violence (SV) prevention program (i.e., RealConsent) prevents SV perpetration and increases bystander behaviors. Data from 743 college men who participated in a randomized controlled trial were analyzed. Simple and multiple-mediation models were estimated, using several theoretical constructs to assess the mechanisms through which RealConsent produced significant effects on SV perpetration and prosocial bystander or intervening behaviors. The results indicated that knowledge of effective consent for sex, hostility toward women, date r

Differential Influences of Parenting Dimensions and Parental Physical Abuse during Childhood on Overweight and Obesity in Adolescents.

Besides other explanatory variables, parenting styles and parental violence might also be responsible for setting a path towards overweight/obesity in childhood. While this association has consistently been observed for adults, findings for adolescents still remain scarce and inconsistent. Therefore, the goal of this study is to add evidence on this topic for children and adolescents. Analyses are based on a sample of 1729 German, ninth-grade students. To analyze associations between parenting dimensions and weight status, non-parametric conditional inference trees were applied. Three gender-s

Intimate Partner Violence and Its Association With Self-Determination Needs and Gender-Power Constructs Among Rural South African Women.

This study aimed to identify psychosocial correlates of intimate partner violence (IPV) by using constructs derived from the self-determination theory (SDT) and gender-power scales. Cross-sectional data (N = 238) were collected from women in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, and were used to test a structural equation model (SEM). The majority (87%) of the participants reported having sexual partners in the past 3 months, and in terms of IPV victimization, 36% and 26% of women had ever experienced verbal and physical abuse, respectively. Bivariate correlations showed that autonomy and beliefs ab

LGBTQ+ Youth-Generated Intervention Concepts for Reducing Teen Dating Violence Inequities.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, nonbinary, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) youth are at substantially greater risk than cisgender heterosexual youth for experiencing teen dating violence (TDV) victimization, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse within dating/romantic relationships. Despite these inequities, there are no evidence-based interventions designed specifically to address TDV among LGBTQ+ youth. To redress this dearth of interventions, we utilized a youth-centric approach, wherein 46 LGBTQ+ youth co-developed intervention concepts for reducing TDV.

Adverse childhood experiences and preschool suspension expulsion: A population study.

BACKGROUND: Preschool suspension and expulsion rates are typically based on teacher reports, and don't simultaneously account for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). OBJECTIVE: To examine estimates in the United States of parent-reported preschool suspension and expulsion rates, in the context of ACEs. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Parents of children aged 3-5 years old (N = 6,100) in the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health dataset. METHOD: We reported the prevalence estimates of preschool suspension and expulsion, and estimated the unique variance of ACEs as risk factors using weighted

Alcohol-related emergency department injury presentations in Queensland adolescents and young adults over a 13-year period.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The rate of alcohol-related emergency department (ED) presentations in young people has increased dramatically in recent decades. Injuries are the most common type of youth alcohol-related ED presentation, yet little is known about these injuries in young people. This paper describes the characteristics of alcohol-related ED injury presentations in young people over a 13-year period and determines if they differ by gender and/or age group (adolescents: 12-17 years; young adults: 18-24 years). DESIGN AND METHOD: The Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit (QISU) database col

Gender, power, and intimate partner violence: a study on couples from rural Malawi.

Gender-based power imbalances are perhaps the most compelling underlying explanation for intimate partner violence (IPV) among women in sub-Saharan Africa. However, an overemphasis on female victimization results in an incomplete understanding of men's experiences as victims and the broader dyadic context in which violence occurs. This study examines the role of three domains of relationship power (power resources, processes, and outcomes) on sexual and physical IPV victimization in a unique sample of 466 young couples from Malawi. Two power resources were studied, namely, income and education

The Field of Gender Through Metaphors: The Dilemma of Female and Male Referees in the Minds of Football Fans.

The perception of football as a male-dominated sport by society, coupled with the socio-cultural and economic barriers faced by women, has constrained their presence in the domain of football and revealed the manifestation of gender norms within the sport. This exclusion further masculinizes sport, negatively affecting social unity and cohesion, and deepening inequality within sport. Within this context, the study seeks to reveal how football fans perceive female and male referees through metaphorical representations. Participants, selected using purposive sampling, are individuals who regular

Mental health and substance use risks and resiliencies in a U.S. sample of transgender and gender diverse adults.

PURPOSE: Victimization contributes to mental and behavioral health inequities among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people, but few studies have simultaneously examined health-promoting resiliencies. We sought to identify classes of risk and resilience among TGD adults, assess characteristics associated with these classes, and examine their relationship with mental health and substance use outcomes. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were from the 2015 US Transgender Survey, a non-probability study including 26,957 TGD adults. Using latent class analysis, we classified patterns of vulnerabili

Gender difference in HIV status disclosure among HIV positive service users.

OBJECTIVES: There exists a strong relationship between gender and HIV/AIDS, with gender inequalities contributing to HIV, and HIV/AIDS in turn worsening gender inequality. In Sub-Saharan Africa only few studies have examined gender differences in HIV status disclosure. Therefore this study explores gender differences in HIV-positive status disclosure. METHODS: A facility based cross-sectional study using qualitative and quantitative data collection methods was conducted among 70 randomly selected HIV positive service users in South West Ethiopia. Data were collected using a pre-tested intervi

Examining the Factor Structure and Measurement Invariance of the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children in a Diverse Sample of Trauma-Exposed Adolescents.

The Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC) is a widely used youth assessment of broad, transdiagnostic symptomatology following trauma. However, its factor structure has not been thoroughly tested in diverse samples. Youth (N = 738) exposed to interpersonal violence, including physical and sexual abuse, completed the TSCC. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test one-, six-, and eight-factor models of the TSCC clinical scales, based on previous literature and the TSCC manual. We examined measurement invariance across boys and girls and Black and non-Black participants, as well as co
