This study investigated the genetic basis of multidrug resistance in two strains of Achromobacter xylosoxidans isolated from patients attending a hospital in Thailand in 2012. These isolates were highly resistant to cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, co-trimoxazole and carbapenems. Whole genome sequencing revealed that the two isolates were not clonally related and identified a carbapenem resistance gene-habouring integron (In687), residing in a novel genomic island, AcGI1. This In687 shares 100% identical nucleotide sequence with ones found in Acinetobacter baumannii Aci 16, i

The abundance and distribution of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soils from six parks using reclaimed water in Beijing, China, were characterized. Three classes of commonly used antibiotics (tetracycles, quinolones, and sulfonamides) were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The highest concentrations of tetracyclines and quinolones were 145.2 μg kg(-1) and 79.2 μg kg(-1), respectively. Detected tetG, tetW, sulI, and sulII genes were quantified by quantitative PCR. ARGs exhibited various abundances for different park soils. The integrase

Toxigenic conversion of environmental Vibrio cholerae strains through lysogenic infection by the phage CTXΦ is an important step in the emergence of new pathogenic clones. The precursor form of the CTXΦ phage, pre-CTXΦ, does not carry the cholera toxin gene. During our investigation, we frequently found pre-CTXΦ prophages in non-toxigenic isolates in the serogroups of O1 and O139 strains in the Zhujiang estuary. We observed high amounts of sequence variation of rstR and gIII(CTX) in the pre-CTXΦ alleles as well as in the tcpA sequences within the strains. In addition, a new pre-CTXΦ allele, wi

The emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria reflects both, a gradual, completely Darwinian evolution, which mostly yields slight decreases in antibiotic susceptibility, along with phenotypes that are not precisely characterized as "resistance"; and sudden changes, from full susceptibility to full resistance, which are driven by a vast array of horizontal gene transfer mechanisms. Antibiotics select for more than just antibiotic resistance (i.e., increased virulence and enhanced gene exchange abilities); and many non-antibiotic agents or conditions select for or maintain antibioti

pbp2b gene alterations were analyzed in 102 clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae (30 penicillin susceptible, 23 intermediate, and 49 resistant) from Korea. On the basis of PBP2B amino acid sequences, penicillin-nonsusceptible isolates of S. pneumoniae belonged to six groups, and 76% of the isolates in groups I to IV showed the same divergent block of amino acid alterations. Thirteen isolates (group II) also possessed a divergent block that was identical to that of Streptococcus oralis. The pbp2b genes of most Korean isolates showed novel mosaic mutations due to horizontal gene transfe

This study explored and compared the influence of graphite, graphene, and graphene oxide (GO) on the performance of anaerobic co-digestion fed with sewage sludge and food waste, the variations of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and the evolution of microbial community. Graphene exhibited the best performance for improving methane production and organic degradation, which increased by 36.09% and 23.07% compared with control group. The experimental results showed that graphene had the greatest influence on the removal efficiency of blaOXA-1, macrolide resistance genes (ermF and ermB), and so

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the metabolic potential of microbial communities in eutrophic lake sediments at the genome-resolved level is essential for predicting nutrient cycling and stress responses in contaminated freshwater ecosystems.
METHODS: In this study, we reconstructed 206 dereplicated metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from sediment cores collected across four regions of Lake Taihu.
RESULTS: These dereplicated MAGs spanned 34 classified phyla and 72 classified genera, with 97.6% unclassified at the species level, indicating substantial genomic novelty. The cyanobacterial MAGs har

Ketolides are promising new antimicrobials effective against a broad range of Gram-positive pathogens, in part because of the low propensity of these drugs to trigger the expression of resistance genes. A natural ketolide pikromycin and a related compound methymycin are produced by Streptomyces venezuelae strain ATCC 15439. The producer avoids the inhibitory effects of its own antibiotics by expressing two paralogous rRNA methylase genes pikR1 and pikR2 with seemingly redundant functions. We show here that the PikR1 and PikR2 enzymes mono- and dimethylate, respectively, the N6 amino group in 2

Approximately 30-32% of global foodborne outbreaks lack an identified causative agent, a critical surveillance gap driven by traditional taxonomic-based monitoring that fails to detect epigenetically silenced cryptic pathogens. These foodborne commensal strains acquire functional virulence gene clusters via horizontal gene transfer, maintain stable, heritable virulence silencing in food matrices to evade routine detection, and undergo rapid virulence activation upon exposure to host gut-specific signals, triggering unexplained gastrointestinal infections. This critical Mini Review focuses on t

Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive bacterium that colonises the skin and is present in the anterior nares in about 25-30% of healthy people. Dependent on its intrinsic virulence or the ability of the host to contain its opportunistic behaviour, S aureus can cause a range of diseases in man. The bacterium readily acquires resistance against all classes of antibiotics by one of two distinct mechanisms: mutation of an existing bacterial gene or horizontal transfer of a resistance gene from another bacterium. Several mobile genetic elements carrying exogenous antibiotic resistance genes migh

The lysogenic phage CTXΦ of Vibrio cholerae can transfer the cholera toxin gene both horizontally (inter-strain) and vertically (cell proliferation). Due to its diversity in form and species, the complexity of regulatory mechanisms, and the important role of the infection mechanism in the production of new virulent strains of V. cholerae, the study of the lysogenic phage CTXΦ has attracted much attention. Based on the progress of current research, the genomic features and their arrangement, the host-dependent regulatory mechanisms of CTXΦ phage survival, proliferation and propagation were revi

Ferric oxides play a critical role in transforming organic contaminants within anaerobic aquaculture sediments; however, their effect on the removal of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) remains unexplored. This study revealed that the addition of Fe3O4 significantly promoted microbial Fe(III) reduction, SMX degradation, and methanogenesis by enhancing metabolic activity and facilitating electron transfer. While nutrient supplementation similarly improved SMX removal, it notably increased ARG abundance, unlike Fe3O4, which effectively suppressed ARGs. Although the presence of t

Previous research has been demonstrated that the residual unextracted antibiotics in spiramycin fermentation residue (SFR) could be efficiently removed by thermally activated peroxodisulfate (TAP) pretreatment, indicating the improvement of biodegradability. This study aimed to investigate the effect of TAP pretreatment on the succession of bacterial community and fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during SFR composting. Results indicated that TAP pretreatment increased the composting temperature and promoted the decomposition of organic matters. Furthermore, TAP pretreatment could inc

Understanding the mechanisms of bacterial resistance to antibiotics made it possible to divide this phenomenon into natural and acquired resistance. The natural resistance of the bacteria is related to the lack of antibiotic ability to penetrate into the interior of the bacteria and limit the ability of penetration through the cell wall, as well as the poor affinity of the drug for the receptor or the lack of such a receptor. The acquired bacterial resistance is related to the changes occurring within the resistance genes and their rapid transfer, in which plasmids participate. The single- and

The widespread use of antibiotics has resulted in pollution associated with antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in urban water systems, threatening the public health and the ecological security. In this study, the patterns of the diversity and abundance of the antibiotics and ARGs in a typical city (Kunming, China) were analyzed by monitoring their presence in the tap water, the land block sewage discharge units, the sewage pipes, the influent of WWTP, the effluent of WWTP, and the urban river channel. The results showed that although the average concentration of total antibioti

BACKGROUND: Neonatal extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC), which can cause severe long-term sequelae by systemic infections, is gradually becoming the primary pathogen threatening neonatal health. The lack of large-scale genomic epidemiological investigation hinders further understanding of neonatal ExPEC. We conducted this nationwide multicenter study to support further strategies for improving neonatal ExPEC management.
METHODS: The neonatal ExPEC strains and clinical information, including antimicrobial resistance phenotype, were collected from nine centers within 7 province

Genomics has emerged as a powerful tool for addressing the global scenario of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the world. The chances of strain circulation across diverse ecosystems has led us to understand the situation from one health point of view. The study examined 897 Escherichia coli genomes across healthcare (n = 615), veterinary and fisheries (n = 219), and environment (n = 63) from Gujarat, India, from 2022 to 2025. The genomes were characterized by sequence type (ST), serotype, and phylogroup analysis to identify the dominant clonal lineages. Furthermore, antibiotic resistance gene

UNLABELLED: Comprehensive whole-genome sequencing was performed on two multi-drug-resistant Escherichia coli strains isolated from cattle manure from a typical dairy farm in Poland in 2020. The identified strains are resistant to beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and fluoroquinolones. The complete sequences of the harbored plasmids revealed antibiotic-resistance genes located within many mobile genetic elements (e.g., insertional sequences or transposons) and genes facilitating conjugal transfer or promoting horizontal gene transfer. These plasmids ar

Escherichia coli (E. coli), a normal intestinal microbiota is one of the most common pathogen known for infecting urinary tract, wound, lungs, bone marrow, blood system and brain. Irrational and overuse of commercially available antibiotics is the most imperative reason behind the emergence of the life threatening infections caused due to antibiotic resistant pathogens. The World Health Organization (WHO) identified antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as one of the 10 biggest public health threats of our time. This harmless commensal can acquire a range of mobile genetic elements harbouring genes c
