A genome-wide association study identifies novel gene associations with facial skin wrinkling and mole count in Latin Americans.

BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified genes influencing skin ageing and mole count in Europeans, but little is known about the relevance of these (or other genes) in non-Europeans. OBJECTIVES: To conduct a GWAS for facial skin ageing and mole count in adults < 40 years old, of mixed European, Native American and African ancestry, recruited in Latin America. METHODS: Skin ageing and mole count scores were obtained from facial photographs of over 6000 individuals. After quality control checks, three wrinkling traits and mole count were retained for genetic analyse

Genome-Wide Association Study of Growth Performance and Immune Response to Newcastle Disease Virus of Indigenous Chicken in Rwanda.

A chicken genome has several regions with quantitative trait loci (QTLs). However, replication and confirmation of QTL effects are required particularly in African chicken populations. This study identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and putative genes responsible for body weight (BW) and antibody response (AbR) to Newcastle disease (ND) in Rwanda indigenous chicken (IC) using genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Multiple testing was corrected using chromosomal false detection rates of 5 and 10% for significant and suggestive thresholds, respectively. BioMart data mining and var

Constructing gene network for type 1 narcolepsy based on genome-wide association study and differential gene expression analysis (STROBE).

Although many genes that affect narcolepsy risk have been identified, the interactions among these genes are still unclear. Moreover, there is a lack of research on the construction of the genetic network of narcolepsy. To screen candidate genes related to the onset of narcolepsy type 1, the function and distribution of important genes related to narcolepsy type 1 were studied and a gene network was constructed to study the pathogenesis of narcolepsy type 1.A case-control study (observational study) of 1075 Chinese narcoleptic patients and 1997 controls was conducted. The gene-sequencing data

A genome-wide association study identifies new loci for factor VII and implicates factor VII in ischemic stroke etiology.

Factor VII (FVII) is an important component of the coagulation cascade. Few genetic loci regulating FVII activity and/or levels have been discovered to date. We conducted a meta-analysis of 9 genome-wide association studies of plasma FVII levels (7 FVII activity and 2 FVII antigen) among 27 495 participants of European and African ancestry. Each study performed ancestry-specific association analyses. Inverse variance weighted meta-analysis was performed within each ancestry group and then combined for a trans-ancestry meta-analysis. Our primary analysis included the 7 studies that measured FVI

Genome-wide association study identifies ERBB4 on 2q34 as a novel locus associated with sperm motility in Japanese men.

BACKGROUND: The decrease in sperm motility has a potent influence on fertilisation. Sperm motility, represented as the percentage of motile sperm in ejaculated sperms, is influenced by lifestyle habits or environmental factors and by inherited factors. However, genetic factors contributing to individual differences in sperm motility remain unclear. To identify genetic factors that influence human sperm motility, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of sperm motility. METHODS: A two-stage GWAS was conducted using 811 Japanese men in a discovery stage, followed by a replication s…

DNM3 and genetic modifiers of age of onset in LRRK2 Gly2019Ser parkinsonism: a genome-wide linkage and association study.

BACKGROUND: Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) mutation 6055G→A (Gly2019Ser) accounts for roughly 1% of patients with Parkinson's disease in white populations, 13-30% in Ashkenazi Jewish populations, and 30-40% in North African Arab-Berber populations, although age of onset is variable. Some carriers have early-onset parkinsonism, whereas others remain asymptomatic despite advanced age. We aimed to use a genome-wide approach to identify genetic variability that directly affects LRRK2 Gly2019Ser penetrance. METHODS: Between 2006 and 2012, we recruited Arab-Berber patients with Parkinson's di

A genome-wide association study to detect genetic variation for postpartum dysgalactia syndrome in five commercial pig breeding lines.

Postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PDS) in sows is an important disease after parturition with a relevant economic impact, affecting the health and welfare of both sows and piglets. The genetic background of this disease has been discussed and its heritability estimated, but further genetic analyses are lacking in detail. The aim of the current study was to detect loci affecting the susceptibility to PDS through a genome-wide association approach. The study was designed as a family-based association study with matched sampling of affected sows and healthy half- or full-sib control sows on six fa

The PSCA polymorphisms derived from genome-wide association study are associated with risk of gastric cancer: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Prostate stem cell antigen (PSCA) is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored 123-aa protein related to the cell-proliferation inhibition and/or cell-death induction activity. Many studies had reported the role of PSCA rs2294008 C > T and rs2976392 G > A polymorphisms on gastric cancer risk. METHODS: To investigate a more precise estimation of the relationships, we performed a meta-analysis on 9 case-control studies included 10,746 cases and 9,158 controls. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strength of the association. RESULTS: For PSCA rs2
