[Feedback from a COVID-19 acute geriatric unit].

Following the outbreak of coronavirus disease, many experience feedbacks have been set up, at the level of departments, hospitals or crisis units. In a geriatric ward, this helped to understand what had happened to each of the caregiver and to the community. In the event of a new wave, this will allow them to anticipate. This period strengthened the sense of belonging and the interest in the well-being of the care receiver.

Association of hernia with subsequent aortic aneurysm in geriatric patients.

OBJECTIVE: Although inguinal hernia and aortic aneurysm share similar pathogenic mechanisms of collagen and elastin destruction, their clinical association in geriatric patients is inconclusive. We assessed the association between hernia and the subsequent occurrence of aortic aneurysm in geriatric patients. METHODS: Adult patients with hernias between 2000 and 2012 were identified from a longitudinal claims database of 1 million beneficiaries from Taiwan's National Health Insurance program, and a control group of patients without hernia were matched by propensity score in a ratio of 1:3. CT findings of Meckel's diverticulum perforation in a geriatric patient.

Meckel's diverticulum is a remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct, found only in approximately 2% of the population. Although Meckel's diverticulum is often diagnosed in nonsymptomatic patients as incidental radiologic findings, complications of Meckel's diverticulum can also be seen on radiologic evaluation. We present a rare care of perforated Meckel's diverticulum in a geriatric patient demonstrated on contrast computed tomography. This was later confirmed during laparoscopic surgery with pathologic evaluation.

Contribution of geriatric model to the management of an epileptic seizure or epilepsy.

Epileptic seizures and epilepsy appear frequent in the elderly. The diagnosis is often more difficult and therapeutic decisions are often debated. In this context, the implementation of a rigorous analysis and reasoning to correctly determine the various components at the origin of the epileptic seizure is fundamental. Some data are in favor of a decrease of the epileptogenic threshold with advancing age. But, this is in no way sufficient to account for the occurrence of a seizure. It is necessary to add to aging factor a chronic pathology responsible for brain lesions (micro or macroscopic: s

Geriatric brain tumor management part I: Meningioma.

Life expectancy continues to rise exponentially. The concept of frailty has emerged as a tool helping to gauge overall health status and risk of adverse events in aging patients, has shown to exhibit a linear relationship with poor survival in the elderly. Multiple pathologies have different genetic, radiographic, clinical and prognostic characteristics in the elderly, responding differently to various treatment modalities and thus present as unique clinical entities, not properly represented in large - guidelines generating studies. We present a two parts review discussing the unique features

Validation of the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory in Chilean older people.

OBJECTIVE: Currently in Chile there is a lack of validated tools for measuring anxiety in the elderly population. Considering this, the purpose of this study was to validate the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI) in the country. METHOD: An analysis of the psychometric properties of the GAI was carried out, using a non-clinical sample of 301 older adults in the Metropolitan and Valparaíso regions of Chile. Older people were asked about anxiety, rumination, depression, well-being and sociodemographic data. RESULTS: An excellent internal reliability was obtained with a Cronbach score of 0.931. A

Sarcopenia Is Related to Mortality in the Acutely Hospitalized Geriatric Patient.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is defined as low skeletal muscle mass with poor physical performance, representing a strong prognostic factor for mortality in older people. Although highly prevalent in hospitalized geriatric patients, it is unknown whether sarcopenia can also predict mortality in these patients. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between sarcopenia according the criteria of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP), International Working Group on Sarcopenia (IWGS), Special Interest Group of Sarcopenia, Cachexia and Wasting Disorders (SIG) and Foundation f

Characteristics and outcome of Emergency Department intubation in geriatric patients.

INTRODUCTION: The number of elderly patients admitted to the Emergency Department (ED) continues to grow due to the natural aging of the population. Consequently, tracheal intubation will be increasingly used in the oldest old. The objective of this retrospective study is to evaluate the characteristics and outcome of patients of 75 years and older undergoing an endotracheal intubation in the ED. METHODS: In a single center, retrospective study we reviewed digital medical files of patients of 75 years and older in the period from 1/01/2008 to 31/12/2010, who were admitted to the ED of the Uni

Complexity of syncope in elderly people: a comprehensive geriatric approach.

Syncope is a prevalent health problem among elderly people. It may be neurally mediated or caused by conditions such as orthostatic hypotension, postprandial hypotension, and cardiac disorders. A combination of different aetiologies is not uncommon in the elderly people. Many pathophysiological processes, including age-related physiological changes, co-morbidities, concomitant medication use, and prolonged bedrest, coexist and predispose elderly people to syncope; advanced age and cardiac syncope are associated with increased mortality. Recurrent syncope and its co-morbidities, such as fall-re

[Geriatric rehabilitation care: Doing the right things right].

BACKGROUND: Geriatric rehabilitation concerns short-term integrated multidisciplinary care aimed at functional recovery and social participation for relatively frail elderly. Given the geriatric clients' complex care issues, nurses should possess sufficient and appropriate competencies in order to identify and assess the relevant symptoms and intervene effectively. Yet, nurses experience a certain apprehensiveness to perform their tasks and express difficulties in multidisciplinary communication and collaboration in a constructive manner. In addition to the client's and informal care giver's p

Geriatric Hip Fracture Care: Fixing a Fragmented System.

CONTEXT: Fragmentation in geriatric hip fracture care is a growing concern because of the aging population. Patients with hip fractures at our institution historically were admitted to multiple different services and units, leading to unnecessary variation in inpatient care. Such inconsistency contributed to delays in surgery, discharge, and functional recovery; hospital-acquired complications; failure to adhere to best practices in osteoporosis management; and poor coordination with outpatient practitioners. OBJECTIVE: To describe a stepwise approach to systems redesign for this patient popu

Application of Geriatric Principles and Care Models in HIV and Aging.

People aging with HIV present a unique challenge for providers. HIV-infected patients experience accentuated aging and multimorbidity, but are typically disconnected from geriatric care, which is limited by a shortage of geriatric providers worldwide. Consequently, HIV providers are tasked with managing multiple age-related illnesses, within service networks that are historically not designed to care for aging patients. While comfortable with the management of antiretroviral therapy, HIV providers may have limited training on how to recognize or manage geriatric syndromes, especially in the co
