Washing our hands of the congenital cytomegalovirus disease epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Each year in the United States, an estimated 40,000 children are born with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, causing an estimated 400 deaths and leaving approximately 8000 children with permanent disabilities such as hearing or vision loss, or mental retardation. More children are affected by serious CMV-related disabilities than by several better-known childhood maladies, including Down syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, and spina bifida. DISCUSSION: Congenital CMV is a prime target for prevention not only because of its substantial disease burden but also because the bi

Impact of sanitation and health education on intestinal parasite infection among primary school aged children of Sherpur, Bangladesh.

This study was carried out in 1999-2000 in the northern part of Bangladesh to determine the impact of sanitary latrine use and of health education on intestinal parasites in school-aged children. The children were between 5 and 13 years of age and stool samples revealed that more than half (53%) of the study sample was still infected with one or more intestinal parasites even after 4 years of intervention. Ascariasis was found to have the highest prevalence rate (36.2%) and hookworm the lowest (10.7%). Intestinal parasite infection was significantly lower (P < 0.05) among those who used a sani

Pre-educational intervention survey of healthcare practitioners' compliance with infection prevention measures in cardiothoracic surgery: low compliance but internationally comparable surgical site infection rate.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are challenging problems leading to significant postoperative morbidity and mortality and may reflect the level of adherence to infection control policies. We used a structured observational method to collect data about infection control practices among surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, cardiopulmonary bypass technicians and orderlies practising in the cardiac operating theatre during open heart surgery at Mater Dei Hospital. To prevent bias, we did not disclose the actual procedures observed to the surgical team members, but participants knew they were being obs

Quantitative risk assessment and interventional recommendations for preventing canine distemper virus infection in captive tigers at selected wildlife stations in Thailand.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) can cause high morbidity and mortality in large felids and pose a significant threat to the conservation of captive and non-captive tiger (Panthera tigris). This study conducted in Thailand's wildlife stations aimed to assess the risks of CDV introduction to captive tiger populations. A stochastic quantitative risk assessment model was employed to determine the pathways and estimate the risk probabilities through humans, animal reservoirs, and fomites. The final risk probability of entry, obtained from a combination of six entry pathways, indicated that the absence

A behavioural change package to prevent hand dermatitis in nurses working in the national health service (the SCIN trial): study protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hand dermatitis can be a serious health problem in healthcare workers. While a range of skin care strategies and policy directives have been developed in recent years to minimise the risk, their effectiveness and cost-effectiveness remain unclear. Evidence now suggests that psychological theory can facilitate behaviour change with respect to improved hand care practices. Therefore, we will test the hypothesis that a behavioural change intervention to improve hand care, based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour and implementation intentions, coupled with provision of hand moisturiser

[Definition and psychopathology of chronic hand dermatitis].

Psychopathology in patients with DCM is as complex as its clinical forms where the factors are numerous and often intricate. It combines psychophysiological, psychopathological factors, behavioral disorders which can be the cause or the consequence of DCM but also the negative impact on quality of life and the simplest daily activities. DCM affects the quality of life of every patient, regardless of the severity. Women are more affected by the DCM that man older age, male sex, atopy and the existence of a contact sensitization are independent risk factors of severity. Depression may affect up

Could Nanotheranostics be the Answer to the Coronavirus Crisis?

The COVID-19 pandemic is expanding worldwide. This pandemic associated with COVID-19 placed the spotlight on how bacterial (e.g., methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) co-infections may impact responses to coronavirus. In this review the ways in which nanoparticles can contain and rapidly diagnose COVID-19 under the umbrella of nanotheranostics (i.e., smart, single agents combining nanodiagnostics and nanotherapeutics) are elaborated. The present work provides new insights into the promising incorporation of antiviral nanotheranostics into nanostructured materials, including electrospun

Patterns of compliance with COVID-19 preventive measures in Armenia: results from a cross-sectional survey.

While numerous studies have explored adherence to individual COVID-19 preventive behaviors and their predictors, their combinations and clustering have been less frequently investigated. We explored the patterns and socio-demographic correlates of mask-wearing, hand washing, maintaining social distance, avoiding gatherings and vaccination against COVID-19 in Armenia. We enrolled participants using stratified two-stage cluster sampling. Telephone interviews were conducted among 3,483 respondents in May-September 2021. A hierarchical cluster analysis and multivariable logistic regression were ap

Factors associated with handwashing behaviour among rural schoolchildren: a cross-sectional study in Georgia, 2024.

BACKGROUND: Handwashing is a critical measure for reducing diarrhoeal and respiratory infections among school-aged children, yet maintaining consistent practice remains a challenge. Behavioural factors, including daily routines, environmental cues, and perceptions of hygiene spaces, shape handwashing behaviour beyond the availability of water and soap. This study examined the behavioural determinants of handwashing among rural schoolchildren in Georgia using the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour (COM-B) model. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2024 among 368 stude
