Periprosthetic joint infection : lessons from the INFORM research programme.

Infection is one of the most devastating complications following arthroplasty. The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funded the multinational INFection ORthopaedic Management (INFORM) research programme to study this problem comprehensively, and then funded INFORM: Evidence into Practice to translate findings into the INFORM guidelines. This annotation outlines the key findings with particular emphasis on hip and knee arthroplasty, including risk factors, impact, diagnosis, and treatment, and suggests guidelines underpinned by high-quality evidence from the programme. Guiding patients through the choices for treating vestibular schwannomas: balancing options and ensuring informed consent.

Counseling patients who are diagnosed with vestibular schwannomas, formerly known as acoustic neuromas, can be challenging. The health care provider has the responsibility to explain, in understandable language, to the patient or legal representative the proposed treatment options, risks and complications associated with each form of treatment, and alternatives to treatment, including no therapy. Patients should be encouraged to gather information before making a treatment decision. For the physicians managing these patients, information should be delivered in a balanced way to ensure patient

[Development of a Crisis Management Manual for Occupational Health Experts].

When crises such as natural disasters or industrial accidents occur in workplaces, not only the workers who are injured, but also those who engage in emergency or recovery work may be exposed to various health hazards. We developed a manual to enable occupational health (OH) experts to prevent health hazards. The manual includes detailed explanations of the characteristics and necessary actions for each need in the list of "OH Needs During Crisis Management" developed after an analysis of eight cases in our previous research. We changed the endings of explanatory sentences so that users could

Revisions in the prescribing information for Epoetin alfa: implications for nephrology nurses and patients on dialysis.

The prescribing information for Epoetin alfa administered to patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) or cancer was updated in November 2007. The revisions include revised safety information, new Epoetin alfa dosing recommendations, and revised information on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The most significant changes included revision of the box warning, the reinstatement of a hemoglobin (Hb) range of 10 to 12 g/dL for patients with chronic renal failure, a new section on managing patients with hyporesponse to Epoetin alfa, and updated HRQoL data. These changes may necessitate revis

Evidence and best practices for trauma-informed care in gynecologic oncology patients.

Diagnosing, treating, and managing gynecologic cancer can lead to significant physical and emotional stress, which may have lasting effects on a patient's overall health and quality of life. The physical symptoms of gynecologic cancer, such as pain, discomfort, and loss of function, may also contribute to emotional distress and anxiety. Further, the diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of gynecologic cancer may be traumatic due to the need for invasive exams and procedures, especially in women with a history of sexual assault or other traumatic experiences.Women with gynecologic cancer may e

Patient reported barriers and facilitators to using a self-management booklet for hip and knee osteoarthritis in primary care: results of a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: To enhance guideline-based non-surgical management of hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA), a multidisciplinary, stepped-care strategy has been implemented in primary care in a region of the Netherlands. To facilitate this implementation, the self-management booklet "Care for Osteoarthritis" was developed and introduced. The aim of the booklet was to educate patients about OA, to enhance the patient's active role in the treatment course, and to improve the communication with health care providers. To successfully introduce the booklet on a large scale we assessed barriers and facilitato

Development and evaluation of an electronic algorithm using a combination of a two-step malaria RDT and other rapid diagnostic tools for the management of febrile illness in children under 5 attending outpatient facilities in Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), febrile illnesses remain a major public health problem in children. However, the persistence of hrp2 antigen and the low sensitivity of pLDH RDT negatively affect antimalarials and antibiotics prescription practices. These limitations lead to poor management of febrile diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). To improve the diagnosis of these febrile diseases and subsequent prescription of antimicrobials, it is hypothesized that the implementation of an algorithm including a two-step malaria RDT PfHRP2/pLDH supported by point-of-care (PoC) tests for

[The interaction of the medical researcher with other scientists].

A brief review of nonmedical scientists contributions to medicine is done. Information on morphology, physiology, biochemistry obtained with high technology has been increasingly used in the clinical work. Therefore broad knowledge and skills have turned to be necessary, though almost impossible to get by one person alone. The answer to this problem is the interdisciplinary team work on basic problems: diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, epidemiology, public health, management of health services, etc. By these work the physician must use models and "black boxes". Both concepts are reviewed. Some

A Mobile Phone Text Messaging Intervention to Manage Fatigue for People With Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injury, and Stroke: Development and Usability Testing.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue significantly affects daily functioning in persons with disabilities. Fatigue management can be challenging, and the information provided during routine physician visits to manage fatigue can be overwhelming. One way to address fatigue is to increase knowledge, skills, and confidence for self-management (ie, patient activation). Self-management programs have shown promising effects in targeting fatigue in persons with disabilities. However, satisfaction with self-management programs is low for persons with disabilities, and tailoring interventions to personalized needs has

Insights from mathematical modelling on the proposed WHO 2030 goals for scabies.

Scabies was adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Neglected Tropical Disease in 2017. There is currently no formal global scabies control programmes or existing WHO guidelines on scabies control although at least two countries, Fiji and Ethiopia, have adopted national approaches to scabies control. In February 2019 WHO held a first Informal Consultation on a Framework for Scabies Control, in part as a response to multiple national requests for guidance on public health management in high disease burden areas. Below we outline control strategies proposed at this meeting and summar

Understanding and Addressing Challenges With Electronic Health Record Use in Gynecological Oncology: Cross-Sectional Survey of Multidisciplinary Professionals in the United Kingdom and Co-Design of an Integrated Informatics Platform to Support Clinical Decision-Making.

BACKGROUND: Electronic health records (EHRs) are a cornerstone of modern health care delivery, but their current configuration often fragments information across systems, impeding timely and effective clinical decision-making. In gynecological oncology, where care involves complex, multidisciplinary coordination, these limitations can significantly impact the quality and efficiency of patient management. Few studies have examined how EHR systems support clinical decision-making from the perspective of end users. This study aimed to explore multiprofessional experiences of EHR use in gynecologi
