[Hospital LOS, medical complexity and deprivation indicators].

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that socioeconomic deprivation is associated with increased hospitalization lengths of stay (LOS) and costs. Yet, the French DRG-based information system (PMSI) does not take deprived situations into account. Hence, we aimed at extracting routinely available variables measuring deprivation from the Hospital Information System and at assessing their association with severity of illness and hospital LOS. METHODS: We performed record linkage between the PMSI database concerning stays of patients aged more than 16years in the short-stay sector of Assistance

Rebuilding Vaccine Confidence Through Community-Centered Health Promotion: A Call for Trust, Engagement, and Sustainable Immunization.

Vaccination remains one of the most effective public health interventions, yet declining vaccine confidence has emerged as a major threat to global immunization programs. Vaccine hesitancy, shaped by misinformation, institutional mistrust, sociocultural factors, and inequitable access to reliable health information and services, has contributed to stagnating vaccination coverage and the resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases. This Perspective, which draws on a purposive rather than systematic reading of the literature, argues that rebuilding vaccine confidence requires moving beyond predom

Generalization of Machine Learning Approaches to Identify Notifiable Conditions from a Statewide Health Information Exchange.

Healthcare analytics is impeded by a lack of machine learning (ML) model generalizability, the ability of a model to predict accurately on varied data sources not included in the model's training dataset. We leveraged free-text laboratory data from a Health Information Exchange network to evaluate ML generalization using Notifiable Condition Detection (NCD) for public health surveillance as a use case. We 1) built ML models for detecting syphilis, salmonella, and histoplasmosis; 2) evaluated generalizability of these models across data from holdout lab systems, and; 3) explored factors that in

Is it appropriate, or ethical, to use health data collected for the purpose of direct patient care to develop computerized predictive decision support tools?

The increasing use of clinical decision support systems (CDSS) to assist clinicians in decision-making is pushing the limits of information technology. The emergence of Electronic Health Records (EHR) coupled with enriched health information standards such as HL7 CDA, SNOMED, ICD-10 and LOINC have provided a rich environment for massive data collection and analysis by healthcare providers. This immense increase in data collection has also provided a gateway for the application of various data mining techniques on clinical datasets so as to measure health status (i.e. function, comfort and like

Vital Signs: Health Care-Associated Legionnaires' Disease Surveillance Data from 20 States and a Large Metropolitan Area - United States, 2015.

BACKGROUND: Legionnaires' disease, a severe pneumonia, is typically acquired through inhalation of aerosolized water containing Legionella bacteria. Legionella can grow in the complex water systems of buildings, including health care facilities. Effective water management programs could prevent the growth of Legionella in building water systems. METHODS: Using national surveillance data, Legionnaires' disease cases were characterized from the 21 jurisdictions (20 U.S. states and one large metropolitan area) that reported exposure information for ≥90% of 2015 Legionella infections. District decision-making for health in low-income settings: a systematic literature review.

Health management information systems (HMIS) produce large amounts of data about health service provision and population health, and provide opportunities for data-based decision-making in decentralized health systems. Yet the data are little-used locally. A well-defined approach to district-level decision-making using health data would help better meet the needs of the local population. In this second of four papers on district decision-making for health in low-income settings, our aim was to explore ways in which district administrators and health managers in low- and lower-middle-income cou

The 'lived-in experience' of global health: The grassroots wisdom we risk losing.

Global Health has accumulated unprecedented knowledge through frameworks, indicators, guidelines, datasets and increasingly powerful digital tools. Yet one valuable resource remains remarkably underused: the lived-in experience of people who have spent decades delivering grassroots health care. This experience is more than accumulated information; it is tacit wisdom shaped by repeated encounters with patients, communities, health systems, scarcity, failure, adaptation and unintended consequences. Such wisdom reveals what actually works, what fails, why programmes succeed or falter at the last

Geographical information systems as a tool in the control of heartworm infections in dogs and cats.

Geospatial tools (e.g., geographical information systems, remote sensing, global positioning systems, and virtual globes) are very useful for the simultaneous visualization of health data with environmental data, which holds promise to understand environmental-health linkages and to generate new hypotheses to be tested in future research. Current epidemiological studies clearly show that the distribution patterns of vector-borne infections are changing; for example, in Europe, heartworm infection and subcutaneous dirofilariosis are spreading throughout areas that previously had little to no in
