Development and Validation of Pediatric Opioid Analgesia Self-Instruction System (PedOASIS): An Opioid Knowledge Tool for Pediatric Clinicians.

BACKGROUND: Acute pain is common in children and young adults with cancer and sickle cell disease. Current training curricula fail to adequately impart skills for pain management. We sought to develop and validate an education and assessment tool to address the safe effective use of opioids for pain management by pediatrics trainees. METHODS: The first version of the tool contained 10 case-based, multiple-choice questions. It was pilot tested within a medium-sized pediatric residency program using preintervention and postintervention surveys to assess residents' knowledge and comfort related

What do physicians think of somatoform disorders?

OBJECTIVE: Although somatoform presentations are common, there is considerable confusion regarding the diagnostic terminology and a reluctance to use these diagnostic labels. The aim of this study was to elicit the views of physicians who see these patients. METHODS: Four small group discussions were held in San Diego and Edinburgh. Psychiatrists from very different practice settings attended these groups (child psychiatrists, forensic psychiatrists, psychopharmacologists, consultation psychiatrists, psychotherapists). Non-psychiatrist attendees included neurologists, pediatricians, internist

Controversies and misconceptions in malaria chemoprophylaxis for travelers.

CONTEXT: Controversies in malaria prevention arise from the absence of data, conflicting data between different studies, conflicting recommendations, deviation of local practice from scientific data, and varying risk thresholds. Misconceptions about the seriousness of malaria, the tolerability of chemoprophylaxis drugs, and the efficacy and safety of repellents contribute to the controversies. OBJECTIVES: To compare several national guidelines on malaria chemoprophylaxis to identify variations in recommendations. We reviewed studies on tolerability of mefloquine with particular focus on its n

Knowledge, attitudes and practice of breast self-examination among women in a suburban area in Terengganu, Malaysia.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Malaysian women, irrespective of age group and ethnicity. The observed low survival rates are related to late stage at presentation despite the availability of breast self examination (BSE) as a reliable screening method for early detection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was designed to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice towards BSE amongst women aged 15 years old and above. Systemic random sampling was applied and information gathered through guided interview by using a structured questionn

Menstrual health literacy - A crucial yet unclear concept.

Menstrual health literacy (or menstrual literacy) is widely argued to contribute to menstrual health outcomes and self-management of symptoms. From menarche to menopause, facets of health literacy are considered insufficient, leaving many individuals without key knowledge and skills to manage their health in the context of widespread menstrual stigma. Despite a high frequency of studies calling for global improvements to menstrual health literacy rates, there is no consensus on what this term "means" in research or practice. This commentary outlines key differences across current definitions o

Food and Nutrition Literacy in Oncology: Associations With Clinical, Behavioral and Care-Related Outcomes - A Systematic Review.

Nutrition is a critical component of cancer care, influencing treatment tolerance, nutritional status, quality of life, and overall clinical outcomes. Patients with cancer often face complex and sometimes conflicting dietary information, making food and nutrition literacy-the ability to access, understand, evaluate, and apply nutrition information-particularly important. Despite growing interest, evidence on nutrition literacy in oncology remains fragmented and conceptually heterogeneous. This systematic review synthesizes quantitative evidence on food and nutrition literacy and related constr

Mapping the evidence on interventions that mitigate the health, educational, social and economic impacts of child marriage and address the needs of child brides: a systematic scoping review.

More than 650 million women alive today were married as children. Relative to efforts to prevent child marriage, efforts to support child brides have received much less attention. This review set out to map and describe interventions that support child brides. We performed a scoping review using seven electronic databases coupled with a grey literature search in January 2022. Data were extracted using a piloted extraction tool and findings were reported in narrative synthesis. A total of 34 projects were included in our review. Most projects focused on improving sexual and reproductive health

Guinea worm disease--a chance for successful eradication in the Volta Region, Ghana.

A guinea worm eradication program in two farming communities in the Akatsi District in the Volta region of Ghana was initially threatened by failure to apply simple preventive practices. Persistent monitoring and education on the use of locally supplied, inexpensive materials for water filtration has turned the program around. In March 1996, the Volta rural water supply and sanitation (VRWSS) project commissioned a guinea worm prevalence and knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) study to collect baseline prevalence data. This study revealed some of the factors that contributed to the persiste
