Nonlinear analysis of heart rate variability for the assessment of Dysphoria.

Dysphoric patients show symptoms associated with Major Depression, although within a narrowed symptomatology spectrum. In prevailing practice, clinicians assess Dysphoria through psychological scores and questionnaires exclusively, therefore without taking into account objective biomarkers. In this study, we investigated heartbeat linear and nonlinear dynamics aiming to an objective assessment of Dysphoria. To this end, we derived standard and nonlinear measures from heart rate variability (HRV) series gathered from dysphoric (n=14) and nondysphoric (n=17) undergraduate students during 5 minut…

G protein-coupled estrogen receptor regulates embryonic heart rate in zebrafish.

Estrogens act by binding to estrogen receptors alpha and beta (ERα, ERβ), ligand-dependent transcription factors that play crucial roles in sex differentiation, tumor growth and cardiovascular physiology. Estrogens also activate the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER), however the function of GPER in vivo is less well understood. Here we find that GPER is required for normal heart rate in zebrafish embryos. Acute exposure to estrogens increased heart rate in wildtype and in ERα and ERβ mutant embryos but not in GPER mutants. GPER mutant embryos exhibited reduced basal heart rate, while …

Heart rate manipulation in dilated cardiomyopathy: Assessing the role of Ivabradine.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate (HR) reduction is of benefit in chronic heart failure (HF). The effect of heart rate reduction using Ivabradine on various echocardiographic parameters in dilated cardiomyopathy has been less investigated. METHODS: Of 187 patients with HF (DCM, NYHA II-IV, baseline HR>70/min), 125 patients were randomized to standard therapy (beta blockers, ACEI, diuretics, n=62) or add-on Ivabradine (titrated to maximum 7.5mg BD, n=63). Beta-blockers were titrated in both the groups. RESULTS: At 3 months both groups had improvement in NYHA class, 6min walk test, Minnesota Living With …

[Correlation of heart rate variability with SYNTAX II on chronic angina].

BACKGROUND: The heart rate variability (HRV) is a prognostic value of cardiovascular risk. It is unknown the correlation between HRV and coronary severity on patients with chronic angina. The objective was to determine the correlation between HRV and the SYNTAX II score in chronic angina. METHODS: Cross-sectional study in patients of 18 years or older with stable angina and indication of coronary angiography who went to a third level center. The SYNTAX II score was established by using coronary angiography, while HRV was obtained by a 24-hour Holter ECG. The correlation between SYNTAX II and …

Musical Auditory Stimulation Influences Heart Rate Autonomic Responses to Endodontic Treatment.

We aimed to evaluate the acute effect of musical auditory stimulation on heart rate autonomic regulation during endodontic treatment. The study included 50 subjects from either gender between 18 and 40 years old, diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis or pulp necrosis of the upper front teeth and endodontic treatment indication. HRV was recorded 10 minutes before (T1), during (T2), and immediately (T3 and T4) after endodontic treatment. The volunteers were randomly divided into two equal groups: exposed to music (during T2, T3, and T4) or not. We found no difference regarding salivary cortisol a…

Very low pacemaker rate following ACURATE neo transcatheter heart valve implantation.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate whether minimising trauma to the aortic annulus and left ventricular outflow tract reduces the occurrence of new conduction disorders and the need for permanent pacemakers. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 175 patients (58% female, mean age 83±6 years) underwent transfemoral TAVI with the Boston Scientific ACURATE neo at three centres in Europe. Prosthesis size selection was based on perimeter-derived annular diameter. Predilatation was performed in all with a balloon 1.9±0.9 mm smaller than the perimeter-derived annular diameter. Post-dilatation

Recent heart rate history affects QT interval duration in atrial fibrillation.

QT interval prolongation is associated with a risk of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. QT interval shortens with increasing heart rate and correction for this effect is necessary for meaningful QT interval assessment. We aim to improve current methods of correcting the QT interval during atrial fibrillation (AF). Digitized Holter recordings were analyzed from patients with AF. Models of QT interval dependence on RR intervals were tested by sorting the beats into 20 bins based on corrected RR interval and assessing ST-T variability within the bins. Signal-averaging within bins was performed…

Molecular Mechanisms of Increased Heart Rate in Shenxianshengmai-treated Bradycardia Rabbits.

BACKGROUND: The molecular mechanisms of Shenxianshengmai (SXSM), a traditional Chinese medicine, on bradycardia have been incompletely understood. The study tried to investigate the gene expression profile and proteomics of bradycardia rabbits' hearts after SXSM treatment. METHODS: Twenty-four adult rabbits were randomly assigned in four groups: sham, model, model plus SXSM treatment, and sham plus SXSM treatment groups. Heart rate was recorded in all rabbits. Then, total RNA of atria and proteins of ventricle were isolated and quantified, respectively. Gene expression profiling was conducted…

Reliability of heart rate as neuroadrenergic marker in the metabolic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome is characterized by a pronounced sympathetic overactivity as documented by the marked increase in muscle sympathetic nerve traffic (MSNA) as well as in plasma norepinephrine values reported in this condition. Whether and to what extent heart rate (HR) reflects the abovementioned adrenergic alterations in metabolic syndrome remains largely undefined. It is also undefined the validity of the abovementioned adrenergic markers in reflecting the main features of the metabolic syndrome. METHODS: In 65 metabolic syndrome patients, aged 56.5 ± 1.3 years (mean ± SEM), we…

Prenatal Exposure to Snus Alters Heart Rate Variability in the Infant.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal use of smoked tobacco during pregnancy causes significant morbidity and mortality in the human infant including alterations in autonomic control with increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome. We hypothesized that maternal snus (smokeless tobacco) use during pregnancy affects autonomic cardiac regulation in the infant, as measured by heart rate variability (HRV) and the low frequency and high frequency ratio (LF/HF ratio). METHODS: A prospective observational study of 56 infants of women who used snus (n = 23) or cigarettes (n = 13) during pregnancy versus tobacco-…

Higher resting heart rate variability predicts skill in expressing some emotions.

Vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV) is a measure of cardiac vagal tone, and is widely viewed as a physiological index of the capacity to regulate emotions. However, studies have not directly tested whether vmHRV is associated with the ability to facially express emotions. In extending prior work, the current report tested links between resting vmHRV and the objectively assessed ability to facially express emotions, hypothesizing that higher vmHRV would predict greater expressive skill. Eighty healthy women completed self-reported measures, before attending a laboratory session in w…

Heart rate variability: Pre-deployment predictor of post-deployment PTSD symptoms.

Heart rate variability is a physiological measure associated with autonomic nervous system activity. This study hypothesized that lower pre-deployment HRV would be associated with higher post-deployment post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Three-hundred-forty-three Army National Guard soldiers enrolled in the Warriors Achieving Resilience (WAR) study were analyzed. The primary outcome was PTSD symptom severity using the PTSD Checklist - Military version (PCL) measured at baseline, 3- and 12-month post-deployment. Heart rate variability predictor variables included: high frequency po…

Exercise training bradycardia is largely explained by reduced intrinsic heart rate.

INTRODUCTION: Resting heart rate (RHR) declines with exercise training. Possible mechanisms include: 1) increased parasympathetic tone, 2) decreased responsiveness to beta-adrenergic stimulation, 3) decreased intrinsic heart rate or 4) combination of these factors. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an increase in resting parasympathetic tone or decrease in response to beta-adrenergic stimulation contributes to the decrease in RHR with training. METHODS: 51 screened healthy subjects aged 18-32 (n=20, mean age 26, 11 female) or 65-80 (n=31, mean age 69, 16 female) were tested before and after 6m…

Impaired heart rate variability in cervical dystonia is associated to depression.

Causes of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction in cervical dystonia (CD) are poorly understood. Studies examining effects of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) therapy on heart rate variability (HRV) yielded contradictory results. There is compelling evidence that depression shifts autonomic balance towards sympathetic predominance. As depression is the most frequent non-motor symptom in CD, we sought to determine if it is associated to dysfunction of cardiovascular autonomic regulation. Standardized interviews, clinical examinations, self-rating forms, autonomic symptom questionnaire, and automated …

Algorithm for heart rate extraction in a novel wearable acoustic sensor.

Phonocardiography is a widely used method of listening to the heart sounds and indicating the presence of cardiac abnormalities. Each heart cycle consists of two major sounds - S1 and S2 - that can be used to determine the heart rate. The conventional method of acoustic signal acquisition involves placing the sound sensor at the chest where this sound is most audible. Presented is a novel algorithm for the detection of S1 and S2 heart sounds and the use of them to extract the heart rate from signals acquired by a small sensor placed at the neck. This algorithm achieves an accuracy of 90.73 and…
