A mouse model system was developed for studying the pathogenesis of oral infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 and the protection offered by prior immunization with a nucleic acid-free vaccine. Forty-two patients with herpes simplex virus infections were tested for neutralizing serum IgM antibodies. Acute ocular infections in two adults were caused by type 2 herpes simplex virus (HSV) ("genital herpesvirus"). One patient had an acute blepharoconjunctivitis, the other an acute keratoconjunctivitis. Genital infections had preceded the eye infections, and type 2 HSV was isolated from the eyes of both patients and from the genital lesions of one patient. This strongly suggests transmission of type 2 HSV from the genital site to the eye.

Hypertrophic pseudo tumoral herpetic lesion is an uncommon presentation in immunocompromized hosts that can be refractory to established therapies. We describe bipolar anal and tonsilar herpetic tumoral lesions related to acyclovir-resistant HSV-2 in a human immunodeficiency virus-infected patient. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections of the lung are rare, but HSV is occasionally detected in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) specimens. We assessed whether routinely performing HSV PCR tests in BAL specimens is warranted. HSV was detected in 7% (52/722) of BALs. In 47% of HSV-positive patients a typical respiratory virus or pathologic microorganism was identified.
