On Deriving Synteny Blocks by Compacting Elements.

Genomic rearrangements are major drivers of evolution and genetic disease. Studying rearrangements requires segmenting genomes of interest into conserved regions, called synteny blocks, that highlight structural differences between genomes. Synteny blocks are typically defined from annotated genes or derived as a by-product of whole-genome alignment. However, as these procedures are heuristic and do not explicitly model rearrangements, they can obscure real variation, create false similarities, and affect phylogenetic inference. We present a formal framework for deriving synteny blocks by part

Pareto Optimization of Masked Superstrings Improves Compression of Pan-Genome k-Mer Sets.

The growing interest in k-mer-based methods across bioinformatics calls for compact k-mer set representations that can be optimized for specific downstream applications. Recently, masked superstrings (MS) have provided such flexibility by moving beyond de Bruijn graph paths to general k-mer superstrings equipped with a binary mask, thereby subsuming Spectrum-Preserving String Sets and achieving compactness on arbitrary k-mer sets. However, existing methods optimize superstring length and mask properties in two separate steps, possibly missing solutions where a small increase in superstring len

When being good means being weak: Preschoolers' dual evaluation of victims along moral and agentic dimensions.

Across 4 experimental studies (N = 526), we investigated whether children judge victims along 2 fundamental dimensions of social cognition, morality and agency/competence, and whether attributions of blame moderate these evaluations. Young children (4-6 years; White, mixed socioeconomic backgrounds; mid-sized European city; data collected 2023-2025) observed puppet-based scenarios depicting moral transgressions, accidents, or control situations. Results consistently showed that children judged victims as more moral than non-victims, replicating the "virtuous victim" effect. However, victims we

Linear Residual Network Modeling for Anti-HIV-1 Activity Prediction and Docking-Validated Design of Biphenyl-DAPY-Based NNRTIs.

To predict the anti-HIV-1 activity of biphenyl-DAPY-based non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis was conducted. Using the heuristic method (HM) for descriptor selection, four predictive models were established: support vector regression (SVR), kernel ridge regression, linear mixed-kernel SVR, and Linear Residual Network (LRNet). Rigorous validations, including leave-one-out cross-validation, fivefold cross-validation, and Y-randomization tests, confirmed their reliability. The LRNet model exhibited the best perfo

Contact, agency, and haptic experience in sport: a conceptual analysis of embodied skill, interpersonal touch, and digital mediation.

Sport is often analyzed through visual, physiological, or cognitive models, yet athletes also act through pressure, flow, friction, rebound, thermal change, bodily guidance, proximity, and vibration. These phenomena are usually examined separately in research on perceptual skill, coaching and safeguarding, disability access, and haptic technology. This conceptual analysis develops the Contact-Agency Framework to compare how body-environment, body-other, and body-technology contact reorganize opportunities to perceive, interpret, calibrate, regulate, contest, and delegate action-relevant judgme

Geomagnetic navigation metaheuristic algorithm for engineering optimization.

This paper proposes a novel meta-heuristic optimization algorithm - Geomagnetic Navigation Algorithm (GNA), which is inspired by the geomagnetic navigation mechanism of migratory birds. The algorithm constructs three core mechanisms: (1) Geomagnetic gradient dominance and multi-source cognitive modulation mechanism, which maps the direction of the magnetic inclination gradient to the global optimal solution and integrates information from three channels: elite memory, group social cognition, and magnetic pole reinforcement attraction; (2) Adaptive cognitive landmark chain correction mechanism,

Minimizing power loss in radial power distribution networks via optimal DG allocation using sensitivity indices aided hippopotamus optimization algorithm.

This paper introduces a new hybrid approach for efficiently optimizing the placement and sizing of DG units in the radial distribution power network (RDPN) by combining the loss sensitivity index (LSI) and voltage sensitivity index (VSI) with a novel heuristic algorithm known as the hippopotamus optimization algorithm (HOA). The hybrid approach pre-locates the optimal buses using the LSI and VSI and then optimizes the DG sizes using the food-searching intelligence and communication strategy of hippos. The effectiveness and adoptability of the suggested hybrid optimization approach are demonstr

Antimony-contact MoS2 FET gas sensors for reinforcement-learning-driven hazard perception at room temperature.

Two-dimensional van der Waals semiconductors promise low-power chemical perception at room temperature, yet contact-limited on-currents and slow recovery impede closed-loop decision making in hazardous environments. Here we propose antimony (Sb)-contact two-dimensional (2D) monolayer MoS2 field-effect transistors (FETs) that leverage contact engineering to boost on-current and charge-transfer gas response for room temperature detection and enable electrically programmable recovery via pre-bias pulses that actively accelerate desorption and baseline restoration. The Sb-contact MoS2 FETs show un

A stochastic programming approach for dynamic allocation of bed capacity and assignment of patients to collaborating hospitals during pandemic outbreaks.

Sustaining regular and infectious care during an infectious outbreak requires adequate management support for patient capacity allocation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals faced severe challenges, including uncertainty surrounding the number of infectious patients needing hospitalization and too little regional cooperation. This led to inefficient usage of healthcare capacity. To better prepare for future pandemics, we have developed a decision support system for central regional decision-making on opening and closing hospital rooms for infectious patients and assigning new infectious p

Unravelling the complexities of alcohol use in the context of loneliness and stress: a systematic review and proposed model.

Alcohol use is frequently linked to emotional distress, yet findings on how loneliness and stress relate to drinking remain inconsistent. This systematic review synthesized evidence from 39 studies published up to December 2025 that examined associations between alcohol use, loneliness/social isolation, and stress/psychological distress in adult, non-clinical populations. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect. Across cross-sectional and longitudinal designs, stress showed the most consistent positive associations with higher alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. In c

Redesigning Primary Care Via Health Systems and Communities.

PROBLEM: Traditional primary care practices have not adequately adapted to the clear consensus on the importance of community and social factors in child health. APPROACH: We describe how primary care can improve child and community health through community partnerships that integrate social care into healthcare systems. Specifically, we discuss a National Academy of Medicine heuristic for social care integration into practice and provide examples of primary care/social care integration. Practices/clinicians may feasibly address community and social factors through individual-level social car

Is it time for AI to take a leading role in mass trauma mental health response?

Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) offer opportunity and risk in mass trauma response, disasters and crisis. This narrative review synthesizes material from our "AI to the Rescue" panel at the inaugural PreAct Mass Trauma conference in June 2025, integrating relevant literature and the authors' expertise. We examine AI approaches beyond large language models (LLMs), including traditional ML and multimodal systems, while grounding the concept of "AI-made disasters" as a necessary third disaster type alongside Human-made and Natural, supported by emerging evidence of AI-cause

Noninvasive heart rate estimation using semantic segmentation and parameter optimization on 4K UAV videos.

We propose a method for noninvasive heart rate (HR) estimation from ultra-high-definition (4K) UAV-recorded videos, leveraging general-purpose instance segmentation without retraining or manual annotation. The method integrates Fast Segment Anything (FastSAM) with silhouette tracking and signal processing techniques. To address segmentation reliability, we introduce a lightweight heuristic metric (Cseg) that detects abrupt changes in the region of interest, enabling the rejection of unreliable frames. Furthermore, a genetic algorithm is further employed to fine-tune preprocessing and estimatio

DiMuS: Disentangled Multi-Signal Learning for Weakly Supervised Point-Based 3D Object Detection.

Weakly supervised 3D object detection has emerged as a promising paradigm to reduce the reliance on costly 3D annotations. Existing methods often rely on 2D projection constraints or heuristic priors to supervise 3D box regression with inexpensive 2D labels. However, they still suffer from projection ambiguity and geometry inconsistency due to the entangled optimization of 3D parameters. In this paper, we propose DiMuS, a Disentangled Multi- $\boldsymbol {S}$ ignal learning framework that integrates complementary supervision from 2D boxes, LLM-derived semantic prior, and 3D geometric alignment

Candidate Structure Prioritization in Non-Target Screening with Predicted Collision Cross-Sections and Uncertainty Quantification.

Candidate structure prioritization in non-target screening (NTS) can be performed using collision cross-sections (CCSs) predicted by a machine-learning (ML) model, with a threshold on the relative difference between measured and in silico CCSs. Such thresholds generally are heuristic and lack a statistical foundation. In this context, we have constructed a conformal predictive system to quantify the uncertainty of the ML-predicted CCSs and provide guarantees on the minimum percentage of prioritized true structures among the candidate lists of the NTS features detected in a sample. The system i

APASA: adaptive selection of informative peritumoral regions for improved automated cancer lesion analysis.

Precise cancer lesion analysis in medical imaging critically depends on the accurate definition of regions of interest (ROIs), which directly influence diagnostic and clinical outcomes. While peritumoral features are known to enhance lesion characterization, efficiently defining meaningful peritumoral ROIs remains a challenge. We propose an adaptive peritumoral area selection approach (APASA) that systematically identifies the most informative ROI surrounding a lesion, enabling the extraction of meaningful radiomic features for improved diagnostic performance. Unlike conventional heuristic or

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation and Scheduling in 6G-Enabled UAV-Assisted IoT Wireless Networks.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a flexible, cost-effective solution for connecting Internet of Things (IoT) devices where traditional infrastructure falls short. However, managing their limited energy alongside the diverse demands of densely deployed devices makes resource allocation a genuinely hard problem. This paper presents a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) framework that jointly optimizes user scheduling, IoT device transmit power, bandwidth, and UAV movement in a 6G-enabled UAV-relay uplink network, using a deterministic large-scale air-to-ground path-loss channel mode

A shortest-path and ADMM-based fluence-level optimization framework for discretized non-coplanar VMAT.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In non-coplanar volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) planning, beam trajectory selection (BTS) and fluence map optimization (FMO) are closely coupled. Within a discretized fluence-level approximation, we formulate this coupling as an integrated mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. METHODS: We solve the resulting MINLP using an alternating optimization strategy. For the BTS subproblem, we construct an ordered layered graph and reformulate dual-trajectory selection as a (2,δ)-partially vertex-disjoint shortest path problem, for which both exact and heu

Exploratory Cross-Cohort Transcriptomic Comparison of Coronary Artery Disease and Non-Obstructive Azoospermia.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) and non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) have distinct aetiologies. We examined whether separately analysed public transcriptomic cohorts contained overlapping exploratory candidate signals without assuming a shared causal mechanism. We re-analysed five Gene Expression Omnibus datasets using differential-expression screening, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), an archived neural-network candidate ranking, xCell enrichment scoring, and single-cell transcriptomic mapping. Nominal differential-expression screening identified 978 CAD-associated and 256
