Ultrasound Features of the Proximal Hamstring Muscle-Tendon-Bone Unit.

The hamstring muscle complex is made by a group of posterior biarticular thigh muscles, originating at the ischial tuberosity, which extend the hip and flex the knee joint. Proximal hamstring injuries are frequent among athletes, commonly involving their long myotendinous junction during an eccentric contraction. In this pictorial essay, we describe the ultrasound technique to visualize the normal anatomy of the proximal hamstring muscle-tendon-bone complex and present ultrasound findings in patients with traumatic injuries and tendinopathies.

[Sacroiliac distorsion or subluxation--a medically established concept? X-ray diagnosis--bone scintigraphy].

50 patients with complaints in the region of the sacroiliacal joints and the hip, but negative radiographs following injury to the pelvis were investigated by bone scan. Scintigraphic diagnosis always showed involvement of the pelvis ring other than the apparent fractures. Together with the clinical symptoms scintigraphic findings are interpreted as sacroiliacal strain or subluxation. Additional injuries to the acetabulum and to the lumbosacral joints may be present. The patients' complaints are explained, the injuries are localized and documented.

Editorial Commentary: Borderline Hip Dysplasia Combined With Increased Anteversion and Ligamentum Teres Disruption Is a Recipe for Hip Microinstability.

The ligamentum teres (LT) is known to play a role as a secondary stabilizer of the hip joint. LT tears can be associated with hip instability. In patients with borderline developmental dysplasia of the hip (BDDH), the correlation between LT tears and microinstability is even more pronounced because of the increased mechanical stress placed on the ligament. This relationship may lead certain surgeons to consider new indications for LT reconstructions. However, caution is warranted regarding the potential role of LT reconstruction in these patients, particularly since the primary deficiency in B

Managing perioperative risk in the hip fracture patient.

Patients with hip fracture benefit from a multidisciplinary team approach for preoperative and postoperative care. Team members, consisting of the orthopedic surgeon, internal medicine consultant, and anesthesiologist, should each have a role in determining a patient's readiness for surgery and communicate with one another about appropriate management. How urgently a hip fracture needs repair depends on the type of injury. In general, most injuries should be repaired as soon as the patient can be medically optimized (preferably 24 to 48 hours), keeping in mind that procedures are often lengthy
