Case Report: A rare small bowel sarcoma.

Intestinal sarcomas are rare gastrointestinal tumors but their etiology is not clear. A middle-aged man was admitted to hospital on 11 April 2023 because of intermittent melena for 1 month. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy were inconclusive, however, melena persisted. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging indicated a left mid-abdominal mass and lymphoma of the small bowel origin. Small bowel enteroscopy revealed infiltrating periannular ulcer lesions in the jejunum. He underwent an operation and a partial resection of the small intestine was performed. The pathological examination revealed mesenchym

Gemelli SLE Data Mart: A Real World Evidence Framework for the Evolution of Systemic Lupus Erythematousus Patients.

The diverse data sources in hospitals are crucial for real-world evidence (RWE) analysis and for developing decision support systems. However, integrating this variety of sources into standardized data collections for a specific disease, requires the development of highly personalized frameworks. In this study, we propose a RWE approach for the development of a Data Mart for the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) at the Gemelli hospital of Rome. Our approach combines natural language processing and data mining procedures to capture information about organ involvements, activity episodes and tr

Probable extinction of influenza B/Yamagata and its public health implications: a systematic literature review and assessment of global surveillance databases.

Early after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the detection of influenza B/Yamagata cases decreased globally. Given the potential public health implications of this decline, in this Review, we systematically analysed data on influenza B/Yamagata virus circulation (for 2020-23) from multiple complementary sources of information. We identified relevant articles published in PubMed and Embase, and data from the FluNet, Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data, and GenBank databases, webpages of respiratory virus surveillance systems from countries worldwide, and the Global Influenza Hosp

Data mining in bone marrow transplant records to identify patients with high odds of survival.

Patients undergoing a bone marrow stem cell transplant (BMT) face various risk factors. Analyzing data from past transplants could enhance the understanding of the factors influencing success. Records up to 120 measurements per transplant procedure from 1751 patients undergoing BMT were collected (Shariati Hospital). Collaborative filtering techniques allowed the processing of highly sparse records with 22.3% missing values. Ten-fold cross-validation was used to evaluate the performance of various classification algorithms trained on predicting the survival status. Modest accuracy levels were

Approaching neurological diseases to reduce mobility limitations in older persons.

The rapidly increasing elderly population poses a major challenge for future health-care systems. Neurological diseases in older persons are particularly common and coexist with other clinical conditions. This is not surprising given that, for example, even patients with Alzheimer Disease (AD) could have relevant extrapyramidal signs at the moment of the diagnosis with motor signs having more negative prognostic value. Longitudinal studies conducted on Parkinson Disease (PD) showed that, after 20 years, dementia is not only present in almost all survivors but is also the main factor influencin

Identification of environmental parameters and risk mapping of visceral leishmaniasis in Ethiopia by using geographical information systems and a statistical approach.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a vector-borne disease strongly influenced by environmental factors, has (re)-emerged in Ethiopia during the last two decades and is currently of increasing public health concern. Based on VL incidence in each locality (kebele) documented from federal or regional health bureaus and/or hospital records in the country, geographical information systems (GIS), coupled with binary and multivariate logistic regression methods, were employed to develop a risk map for Ethiopia with respect to VL based on soil type, altitude, rainfall, slope and temperature. The risk model

Power is only skin deep: an institutional ethnography of nurse-driven outpatient psoriasis treatment in the era of clinic web sites.

We present an institutional ethnography of hospital-based psoriasis day treatment in the context of evaluating readiness to supplement services and support with a new web site. Through observation, interviews and a critical consideration of documents, forms and other textually-mediated discourses in the day-to-day work of nurses and physicians, we come to understand how the historical gender-determined power structure of nurses and physicians impacts nurses' work. On the one hand, nurses' work can have certain social benefits that would usually be considered untenable in traditional healthcare

Costing intensive care services: a review of study methods, results and limitations.

Critical care services are an identified, resource-intensive component of health-care provision. Examining cost containment and clinical effectiveness in this specialty is therefore highly appropriate, although difficult to achieve in practice. The studies reviewed in this paper utilised various methodologies to capture different components of service and patient costs. The methods included combinations of per diem costs, hospital charges, direct consumption and unspecified cost estimates. Medical fees were commonly excluded and other costs, such as equipment and overheads, often not identifie

Blood Cancer Clinical Trials Long-term Follow-up Using Integrated Healthcare Systems Data (BLISS): protocol for a data-linkage study integrating randomised clinical trials with national healthcare systems data.

INTRODUCTION: Randomised clinical trials (RCTs) are gold standard in evidence-based medicine, but follow-up typically relies on clinic visits and trial-specific data collection. Much of this information overlaps with routinely collected healthcare systems data (HSD), such as electronic health records and national registries. Leveraging HSD for trial follow-up has the potential to reduce cost, time and resource burden. However, concerns remain about data quality and evidence is needed to show that HSD-based outcomes are reported to an equivalent standard to trial-specific data. The Blood Cancer

Regional Assessment of Lower limb Amputations in sub-Saharan Africa (RAMPs): a prospective cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Major lower limb amputation, defined as an amputation above the level of the ankle joint, is a substantial cause of morbidity and mortality. Limited data exist on the burden, aetiology and outcomes of major lower limb amputations in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This is despite increasing rates of diabetes, peripheral arterial disease and trauma, with further projected increases in these conditions, which often precede major lower limb amputation. The Regional Assessment of Amputations in sub-Saharan Africa (RAMPs) study aims to address this knowledge gap by performing a multicentre,

Ambiguous and Incomplete: Natural Language Processing Reveals Problematic Reporting Styles in Thyroid Ultrasound Reports.

OBJECTIVE: Natural language processing (NLP) systems convert unstructured text into analyzable data. Here, we describe the performance measures of NLP to capture granular details on nodules from thyroid ultrasound (US) reports and reveal critical issues with reporting language. METHODS: We iteratively developed NLP tools using clinical Text Analysis and Knowledge Extraction System (cTAKES) and thyroid US reports from 2007 to 2013. We incorporated nine nodule features for NLP extraction. Next, we evaluated the precision, recall, and accuracy of our NLP tools using a separate set of US reports

A Concept Analysis of Expertise Associated With Practicing Clinical Nurses in Hospital Settings.

AIM: Analyse the concept of expertise among practicing clinical nurses in hospital settings. BACKGROUND: The generational loss of expert clinical nurses was exacerbated globally by the novel coronavirus. This ongoing loss combined with the increased complexity of hospitalised patients has prompted an urgent need to understand expertise among clinical nurses who practice in hospital settings. METHODS: Walker and Avant's concept analysis method was used. PubMed, Medline, CINAHL and Access Medicine were searched (1982-2025) for research studies and literature reviews published in English that a

Is emergency department quality related to other hospital quality domains?

OBJECTIVES: Systems theory suggests that there should be relatively high correlations among quality measures within an organization. This was an examination of hospital performance across three types of quality measures included in Medicare's Hospital Inpatient Value-Based Purchasing (HVBP) program: emergency department (ED)-related clinical process measures, inpatient clinical process measures, and patient experience measures. The purpose of this analysis was to determine whether hospital achievement and improvement on the ED quality measures represent a distinct domain of quality. METHODS:
