Perspectives and Experiences of People Receiving Care on a De-escalation Intervention to Reduce Restrictive Practices in Acute Mental Health Units.

Interventions aimed at reducing restrictive practices are also designed to enhance the service experience in acute mental health units. However, people with experience of coercive engagement with these services are seldom involved as active contributors in evaluative research on interventions to reduce restrictive practices. With the meaningful involvement of lived experience practitioners, this research was aimed at examining care recipients' service experiences and perspectives on nurses' therapeutic responses during the implementation of a de-escalation intervention in three adult inpatient

The Importance of Treatment Modality in Veterans with Opioid Use Disorder: Implications for Virtual Care.

This study examined treatment utilization across in-person and virtual treatment modalities in veterans who were on medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD; N = 139). Treatment records for veterans in addiction treatment on MOUD were examined for 3-months prior to telehealth conversions ("Pre-Telehealth," 12/02/2019-03/14/2020), 3-months during the initial telehealth transition ("Telehealth," 03/15/2020-06/30/2020) and 3-months during post-telehealth transition ("Re-Entry," 07/01/2020-10/01/2020). Analyses examined the relationship between treatment modality and demographic features, psychia

Analysis of the mental health status of hospital staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Medical work is a complex and interpersonally sensitive job; clinicians interact with patients, colleagues and society-at-large daily, and they are under pressure from a variety of sources. The doctor-patient relationship is of particular concern. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the current mental health status of hospital staff and related influencing factors during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODS: The Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7) were used to survey the current mental health status of hospital employees. The

Hospital re-admission associated with adverse drug reactions in patients over the age of 65 years.

CONTEXT: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are responsible for 5 % of hospital admissions, but hospital re-admission induced by ADRs remains poorly documented. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to estimate the rate of hospital re-admission and the factors associated with re-admission in the patients over the age of 65 years. Secondary, we described the characteristics of cases of ADRs leading to re-admission for drugs other than chemotherapy agents. METHODS: Data were extracted from hospital discharge summaries provided by the Department of Medical Information of Toulouse University Hospital.

Three kinds of proactive risk analyses for health care.

BACKGROUND: In health care, proactive risk assessment usually takes the form of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). An applied research firm, four community hospitals, and a community health care alliance in south-central Washington State--as members of the Tri-Cities Patient Safety Coalition (TCPSC)--used proactive risk assessment methods such as event tree analysis (ETA) and hazard identification to assess the risk of adverse events associated with a process or system. CASE STUDIES: (1) ETA of a Mental Health Issue: An assessment was performed to understand the risk presented by emerg

[Mental illnesses in medical certificates in 18 century Hessen].

This study deals with the medical certificates (Attestata medica) for mentally disturbed or insane and mad individuals which were issued by physicians (Stadt-/Landphysici) between 1750 and 1807 to gain admission to two of the Hessen High Hospitals (Hessische Hohe Hospitäler), Haina and Merxhausen. They provide an approach to mental illness in the 18th century from two perspectives: a study of coping with sickness, especially in the countryside, and mirrored by the doctor's view. In undoubted cases of madness the physician appears merely as a representative of public health care (Medizinische P

Profiles in patient safety: authority gradients in medical error.

The term "authority gradient" was first defined in aviation when it was noted that pilots and copilots may not communicate effectively in stressful situations if there is a significant difference in their experience, perceived expertise, or authority. A number of unintentional aviation, aerospace, and industrial incidents have been attributed, in part, to authority gradients. The concept of authority gradient was introduced to medicine in the Institute of Medicine report To Err Is Human, yet little has been written or acknowledged in the medical literature regarding its role in medical error.

Why do nurses abuse patients? Reflections from South African obstetric services.

Nurse-patient relationships are a substantially neglected area of empirical research, the more so in developing than developed countries. Although nursing discourse usually emphasises "caring", nursing practice is often quite different and may be more strongly characterised by humiliation of patients and physical abuse. This paper explores the question: why do nurses abuse patients, through presentation and discussion of findings of research on health seeking practices in one part of the South African maternity services. The research was qualitative and based on 103 minimally structured in-dep

Charging a patient with assault of a nurse on a psychiatric unit.

A patient was successfully charged with assault of a nurse on a Psychiatric Unit and was placed on probation for one year. The judge found her guilty despite the location of the incident and her 20-year history of previous psychiatric treatment, including 14 hospitalizations. Following this confrontation, the patient improved markedly in her behaviour and has continued to lead a more productive life without hysterical outbursts. It is concluded that proceeding with legal charges in such a situation is justifiable and can also be therapeutic.

The relationship between nursing care perception and nurses' communication skills: from the perspective of inpatients - a cross-sectional study.

Effective communication skills among nurses, coupled with high-quality nursing care, are essential components of healthcare services. Both communication and care are abstract, multifaceted processes that are uniquely perceived by patients, with their effects directly impacting patient experiences. Thus, understanding patient perspectives is vital for delivering high-quality, patient-centered healthcare. This study aimed to examine inpatients' perceptions of nursing care, assess their views on nurses' communication skills, and explore the relationship between these perceptions. This cross-secti

Incidence and Variation of Discrepancies in Recording Chronic Conditions in Australian Hospital Administrative Data.

Diagnostic data routinely collected for hospital admitted patients and used for case-mix adjustment in care provider comparisons and reimbursement are prone to biases. We aim to measure discrepancies, variations and associated factors in recorded chronic morbidities for hospital admitted patients in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Of all admissions between July 2010 and June 2014 in all NSW public and private acute hospitals, admissions with over 24 hours stay and one or more of the chronic conditions of diabetes, smoking, hepatitis, HIV, and hypertension were included. The incidence of a no
