Conflict between morphology and molecular data: a case of the genus Caryophyllaeus (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), monozoic tapeworms of cyprinid fishes.

Molecular analysis of an extensive specimen collection of morphologically distinct tapeworms of the genus Caryophyllaeus Gmelin, 1790 (Cesto … t- and geography-related intraspecific morphological variability. Genetic data confirmed euryxenous host specificity of both species, most profoundly C. laticeps, but did not support the existence of cryptic species. In fact, some of the fish hosts may harbour both of the congeneric species including several of their respective morphotypes. The pattern of morpholo …

Bacillus anthracis edema factor substrate specificity: evidence for new modes of action.

Since the isolation of Bacillus anthracis exotoxins in the 1960s, the detrimental activity of edema factor (EF) was considered as adenylyl cyclase activity only. Yet the catalytic site of EF was recently shown to accomplish cyclization of cytidine 5'-triphosphate, uridine 5'-triphosphate and inosine 5'-triphosphate, in addition to adenosine 5'-triphosphate. This review discusses the broad EF substrate specificity and possible implications of intracellular accumulation of cyclic cytidine 3':5'-monophosphate, cyclic uridine 3':5'-monophosphate and cyclic inosine 3':5'-monophosphate on cellular f

Tick histamine-binding proteins and related lipocalins: potential as therapeutic agents.

Tick histamine-binding proteins bind histamine with high affinity and specificity. This is attained by a novel binding mechanism, whereby histamine is sequestered within a binding cavity of the lipocalin fold. The histamine binding proteins and related protein family members are currently under investigation as potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of various diseases, including conjunctivitis, allergic rhinitis, carcinoid syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis. While these proteins show great therapeutic potential, they are part of a diverse family of tick lipocalin proteins, some of whic

[A new flea species of the genus Allopsylla Beaucournu et Fain, 1982 (Siphonaptera: Ischnopsyllidae) from Central African Republic, found on a little known molossid bat].

A pair of Allopsylla lobayensis Beaucournu & Barrière, new species were collected the first of November 1999 in Ngotto forest, in the south-western part of the Lobaye basin, Central African Republic (CAR). The host specimen, a little known molossid bat (Myopterus whitleyi), constitutes the first record of this species in CAR. The new flea species appears taxonomically close to A. hetera Beaucournu & Fain, 1982, one of the two other Allopsylla species, previously know from other faunal regions (A. alloides in Nigeria and A. hetera in Democratic Republic of the Congo). The parasitism of three di

Discovery and Evolutionary Analysis of a Novel Bat-Borne Paramyxovirus.

Paramyxoviruses are a group of RNA viruses, such as mumps virus, measles virus, Nipah virus, Hendra virus, Newcastle disease virus, and parainfluenza virus, usually transmitted by airborne droplets that are predominantly responsible for acute respiratory diseases. In this paper, we identified a novel paramyxovirus belonging to genus Jeilongvirus infecting 4/112 (3.6%) bats from two trapping sites of Hainan Province of China. In these animals, the viral RNA was detected exclusively in kidney tissues. This is the first full-length Jeilongvirus genome (18,095 nucleotides) from bats of genus Hippo

Genome characteristics and type IV effector protein repertoire of Coxiella burnetii depend rather on Genomic Groups than on host species.

BACKGROUND: Q fever is a zoonotic disease with virtually worldwide dissemination. Its bacterial agent, Coxiella burnetii, is primarily found … d proliferate in the host. Thus, these effectors have been suggested to play a role in the presumed host specificity and disease manifestation. RESULTS: In the present study, a comprehensive set of 140 C. burnetii genomes from ten Genomic Groups (GGs) and various hosts was studied bioinformatically to determine if there was an association between their genomic cha …

Negative covariance between water mite and gregarine parasitism for adult dragonflies, Leucorrhinia intacta (Hagen): an age-related pattern?

Studies on parasite-mediated selection often focus on single parasite taxa infecting single species of hosts. However, host populations experience infections by multiple parasite taxa simultaneously; coinfection is expected to influence how host- and/or parasite-related factors affect host exposure and susceptibility to various parasites, and the resulting patterns of infection. We sampled adult dragonflies from a population of Leucorrhinia intacta (Hagen) in eastern Ontario, Canada. Dragonflies were exposed to parasitism by both water mites (Arrenuridae) and gregarines (Eugregarinidae). We te

Cerebral and non-cerebral coenurosis in small ruminants.

Cerebral coenurosis is caused by Coenurus cerebralis, the larval stage of Taenia multiceps. The metacestode causes severe lesions in the brain and spinal cord of the intermediate host, so-called "gid" or "stagger" disease. Whereas, the non-cerebral coenurosis caused by Coenurus gaigeri, the larval stage of Taenia gaigeri, particularly affects goats. The cyst form of the Taenia gaigeri is found in intramuscular and subcutaneous tissues. Isolation and partial characterization of a virulent bacteriophage IHQ1 specific for Aeromonas punctata from stream water.

Aeromonas punctata is the causative agent of septicemia, diarrhea, wound infections, meningitis, peritonitis, and infections of the joints, bones and eyes. Bacteriophages are often considered alternative agents for controlling bacterial infection and contamination. In this study, we described the isolation and preliminary characterization of bacteriophage IHQ1 (family Myoviridae) active against the Gram-negative bacterial strain A. punctata. This virulent bacteriophage was isolated from stream water sample. Genome analysis indicated that phage IHQ1 was a double-stranded DNA virus with an appro

Molecular phylogeny of the genus Bartonella: what is the current knowledge?

Species of the genus Bartonella are involved in an increasing variety of human diseases. In addition to the 14 currently recognized species, … ogether, it has been suggested that these bacteria and their reservoir hosts may co-evolve. Lack of host specificity, however, seems to be frequent and may reflect the influence of vector specificity. Host or vector specificity may also explain the current geographic distribution of Bartonella species.

High outcrossing rates in a self-compatible and highly aggregated host-generalist mistletoe.

Plants have evolved various strategies to avoid inbreeding, but the mass flowering displayed by many plants predisposes them to within-plant pollen movements and self-pollination. Mistletoes often aggregate at multiple spatial scales. Their bird pollinators often visit several flowers of the same individual and of others on the same host tree. We hypothesized that hermaphroditic mistletoes have self-incompatibility mechanisms that reduce or prevent selfing. Whether their spatial distribution, affected by host specificity, host distribution, and the behaviour of seed dispersers, influences thei…

Genetic engineering of cyanophages for harmful cyanobacterial bloom treatment-A mini review.

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) are a prominent worldwide environmental concern. Proliferation of HCBs outpaces the development of mitigation and management technologies. Recently, cyanophages began to emerge as a potential abundant resource that can be harnessed for target-specific HCB treatment. However, there exist two major technical barriers in applying cyanophage-based treatment to HCB mitigation: host specificity and lysogenic life cycle. This minireview attempts to parse documented studies that developed or applied genetic engineering approaches or technologies to tackle the barri…

A 20-Gene Set Predictive of Progression to Severe Dengue.

There is a need to identify biomarkers predictive of severe dengue. Single-cohort transcriptomics has not yielded generalizable results or parsimonious, predictive gene sets. We analyzed blood samples of dengue patients from seven gene expression datasets (446 samples, five countries) using an integrated multi-cohort analysis framework and identified a 20-gene set that predicts progression to severe dengue. We validated the predictive power of this 20-gene set in three retrospective dengue datasets (84 samples, three countries) and a prospective Colombia cohort (34 patients), with an area unde

Morphometric discrimination of two allozymically diagnosed sibling species of the Echinorhynchus gadi Zoega in Muller complex (Acanthocephala) in the North Sea.

Allozyme electrophoresis was used to detect biological species of the E. gadi complex from gadids from the northern North Sea. A fixed difference at one of nine enzyme loci surveyed confirmed the existence of two reproductively isolated, sympatric species. Mixed infections of two E. gadi spp. (termed A and B) were observed in Gadus morhua and Pollachius virens. E. gadi sp. B was also found in Melanogrammus aeglefinus and Merlangius merlangus. The presence of gravid females of E. gadi spp. A and B in the same host species, P. virens, and sometimes in the same host individual, indicates that nei

Use of an animal model of trichomoniasis as a basis for understanding this disease in women.

Studies of host-parasite relationships in bovine trichomoniasis are presented as a basis for understanding mechanisms of pathogenesis and protection in trichomoniasis in women. The bovine infection is caused by Trichomonas foetus, a trichomonad species closely related to the human pathogen Trichomonas vaginalis. An estrogenized murine model infected with T. vaginalis is useful for the study of virulence factors, but the bovine model has advantages for the study of immunity because T. foetus infection is common in this natural host. In vitro, several virulence factors similar to those of T. vag

Characterization of host substrates of SARS-CoV-2 main protease.

The main protease (Mpro) plays a crucial role in coronavirus, as it cleaves viral polyproteins and host cellular proteins to ensure successful replication. In this review, we discuss the preference in the recognition sequence of Mpro based on sequence-based studies and structural information and highlight the recent advances in computational and experimental approaches that have aided in discovering novel Mpro substrates. In addition, we provide an overview of the current understanding of Mpro host substrates and their implications for viral replication and pathogenesis. As Mpro has emerged as

The paracoccidioides cell wall: past and present layers toward understanding interaction with the host.

The cell wall of pathogenic fungi plays import roles in the interaction with the host, so that its composition and structure may determine the course of infection. Here we present an overview of the current and past knowledge on the cell wall constituents of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and P. lutzii. These are temperature-dependent dimorphic fungi that cause paracoccidioidomycosis, a systemic granulomatous, and debilitating disease. Focus is given on cell wall carbohydrate and protein contents, their immune-stimulatory features, adhesion properties, drug target characteristics, and morpholog

Antibiotics--past, present, and future.

The drug therapy for diseases other than those caused by microbial agents involves treating the host. In infectious diseases therapy, the goal is to rid the host of the pathogen. Hence, drug therapy is aimed at the pathogen. Because a second living agent is involved in the triangle, drug therapy is affected by the pathogen's nature, its tissue specificity, and, most importantly, the changes it undergoes to survive. The history of antimicrobial therapy has clearly demonstrated that the drugs that are used to treat infections are also responsible for making them more difficult to treat in future
