Protozoan parasites including Plasmodia, Leishmania, Trypanosoma, Entamoeba, Trichomonas and others cause diseases in humans and domestic livestock having far-reaching socio-economic implications. They show remarkable propensity to survive within hostile environments encountered during their life cycle, and the identification of molecules that enable them to survive in such milieu is a subject of intense research. Currently available knowledge of the parasite cell surface architecture and biochemistry indicates that sialic acid and its principle derivatives are major components of the glycocal

Entomophthora leyteensis Villacarlos & Keller sp. nov., a species of Entomophthorales infecting the whitefly Tetraleurodes acaciae on Gliricidia sepium in the Philippines is described. Disease prevalence monitored weekly for 8 weeks indicated that the fungus could cause 8-31% infection within the whitefly population. Epizootics due to this fungus occurred in Inopacan, Leyte. Sampling live whitefly adults and dissecting them on glass slides for microscopic examination of fungal structures was found to give a better measure of prevalence than actual counts of infected insect cadavers. Snail-infection experiments were carried out with a number of different species and populations of Bulinus and isolates of Schistosoma haematobium. The parasites came from six localities in the Senegal River basin (SRB), in the Lower Valley (Mbodiene), Middle Valley (Podor, Diatar and Nguidjilone), and Upper Valley (Aroundou and Galladé). Isolates of S. haematobium from the Middle and Upper Valleys all showed some compatibility with laboratory-bred B. truncatus from Mali, but none of these isolates was compatible with laboratory-bred B. truncatus originating from Senegal. Schistosoma haematobi

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. In this article, the parasitic and host factors contributing to the pathophysiology of P carinii pneumonia will be reviewed. In particular, P carinii adherence to alveolar epithelial cells plays a central role in the development of pneumonia. Potential mechanisms mediating this attachment include cell surface glycoproteins, exogenous fibronectin and components of the parasitic cytoskeleton. Host factors contributing to respiratory impairment also have been recently e

A study was made of the host-parasite relationship with Cryptosporidium parvum (Apicomplexa, Sporozoa), which parasitizes the intestine of newborn rats experimentally infected with oocysts isolated from C. parvum-infected calves. The endogenous development of the parasite occurs extracytoplasmically in the microvillar compartment of the enterocytes. The formation of the extracytoplasmic parasitophorous vacuole (PV), like that surrounding the endogenous stages of C. parvum, is regarded as one of the possible and evolutionary established ways for the intracellular parasite to escape from the hos

Individual worms from rats infected with different strains of Hymenolepis diminuta were incubated in vitro and the products lactate, succinate, acetate and ammonia assayed. Variability in excretion was not confined to differences between strains. Two metabolic types were identified. Where succinate was above 20 mumol g-1 h-1, lactate excretion was low. Where succinate was not detected, lactate excretion was high. Acetate excretion was variable. Lactate and ammonia excretion were positively correlated. All worms from one rat were of the same type but could be of either type from different rats.

The analysis of the literary data has shown that the population of the Far East is infected not with D. latum, as in other areas of the disease distribution, but with the Far Eastern tapeworm type D. klebanovskii. The final hosts of the parasite are the representatives of the Carnivora order, while the additional hosts are fish of Oncorhynchus and Salvelinus genera. Helminthiasis foci are localized in seaside biotopes on the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea. The remaining area of the disease distribution, including Maritime and Khabarovsk Territory, Sakhalin and Kamchatka re

Two age groups of parasite-free lambs, 4 months and 8 months, were infected with 50 000 infective larvae (L3) of T. vitrinus. A further group of 8 month old lambs were infected with 250 000 L3 T. vitrinus. The lambs were slaughtered at intervals after infection, and the size and linear distribution of their intestinal worm burdens examined and compared statistically. After the 50 000 L3 infections, it was found that a higher percentage of the initial inoculum had become established in the younger lambs but that there were no differences between the intestinal distributions of the population in

The distribution and attachment of Trypanosoma congolense were investigated in the proximal part of the proboscis of Glossina m. morsitans. In the food canal, epimastigotes and trypomastigotes formed tufts or compact layers. Trypanosomes were attached to the cuticle by their flagella, which formed zonar hemidesmosomes. The flagella were mostly attached parallel to the axis of the labrum and often pointed to its tip. Foot-like processes of the flagella came into contact with adjacent flagella leading to dense grouping of the trypanosomes. Despite narrow contacts between adjacent flagella, no de

The outcome of coevolutionary interactions is predicted to vary across landscapes depending on local conditions and levels of gene flow, with some populations evolving more extreme specializations than others. Using a globally distributed parasite of colonial seabirds, the tick Ixodes uriae, we examined how host availability and geographic isolation influences this process. In particular, we sampled ticks from 30 populations of six different seabird host species, three in the Southern Hemisphere and three in the Northern Hemisphere. We show that parasite races have evolved independently on hos

Plasmodium tryptophan-rich proteins are involved in host-parasite interaction and thus potential drug/vaccine targets. Recently, we have described several P. vivax tryptophan-rich antigens (PvTRAgs), including merozoite expressed PvTRAg38, from this noncultivable human malaria parasite. PvTRAg38 is highly immunogenic in humans and binds to host erythrocytes, and this binding is inhibited by the patient sera. This binding is also affected if host erythrocytes were pretreated with chymotrypsin. Here, Band 3 has been identified as the chymotrypsin-sensitive erythrocyte receptor for this parasite

The health consequences of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are often attributed to parasite-caused tissue damage and nutrient loss, combined with immune energy costs. However, this view overlooks additional pathways by which infection can alter host energetics. Here, we take a first step toward defining this suite of energetic pathways and clarifying their cumulative impact on health. We consider how STH characteristics and human variation influence host-parasite interactions, as well as the initial and downstream energetic costs of infection. We conclude by discussing how complex b…
