Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is widespread in aquatic environments and plays a crucial role in various biogeochemistry processes. Urbanization and anthropogenic activities have significantly altered the source and characteristics of DOM in rivers. Therefore, analyzing the spatial and temporal variation of DOM on a watershed scale to trace its source for effective water quality management is important. In this study, the composition characteristics of DOM in the Chaohe River watershed, which is the source of drinking water in northern China, were analyzed using the EEM-PARAFAC method. Further

Rural areas lacking essential sewage treatment facilities and collection systems often experience eutrophication due to elevated nutrient loads. Understanding nitrogen (N) sources and transport mechanisms in rural catchments is crucial for improving water quality and mitigating downstream export loads, particularly during storm events. To further elucidate the sources, pathways, and transport mechanisms of N from a rural catchment with intensive agricultural activities during storm events, we conducted an analysis of 21 events through continuous sampling over two rainy seasons in a small rural

Storm events result in nutrient fluctuations and deterioration of reservoir water supply quality. Understanding of nutrient dynamics (e.g., concentration, composition, loads and transport pathways) and adoption of effective management strategies are critical for safeguarding water quality. A comprehensive monitoring was conducted for three storm events during the rainy season in 2023. Results showed nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) dynamics demonstrate a significant response to hydrological process. Rainfall resulted in the highest event mean concentrations (EMCs) of total nitrogen (TN), nitrat

The profound influence of climate change on the hydrological cycle raises concerns about its potential impacts on water quality, particularly in agricultural catchments. Here, we analysed 200 storm events monitored for nitrate and total phosphorus (TP) at sub-hourly intervals from 2016 to 2023 in the Kervidy-Naizin catchment (north-western France). Using Extreme Value theory, we identified storm events with extreme concentrations and compared their hydroclimatic characteristics to those of non-extreme events. We hypothesised that extreme concentration events occurred under extreme hydroclimati

The widespread application of macrolide antibiotics has caused antibiotic resistance pollution, threatening the river ecological health. In this study, five macrolide antibiotics (azithromycin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin, erythromycin, and anhydro erythromycin A) were monitored in the Zao River across three hydrological periods (April, July, and December). Simultaneously, the changes in antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and planktonic bacterial communities were determined using metagenomic sequencing. A clear pollution gradient was observed for azithromycin

Sinkhole hazards pose considerable challenges in the west-central region of Texas. This study integrates multisource datasets and innovative techniques to detect early sinkhole development and identify the processes governing their formation. The techniques employed encompass feature extraction, cluster analysis, and deformation process monitoring. Potential sinkholes were initially mapped using high-resolution elevation data, and a circularity index (CI) threshold value of 0.85 was applied to filter out depressions with noncircular shapes. Subsequently, Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PS

The hyporheic zone, i.e. the groundwater-surface water interface within riverine/riparian ecosystems, plays a key role in water transport, energy flow and biogeochemical cycling at watershed scales. Water and heat exchange are fundamental processes regulating biogeochemical cycles in the hyporheic zones. To improve the understanding of hyporheic flow and heat transport in meandering streams, high-resolution measurements of water level and temperature, combined with a 3-D coupled model of flow and heat transport in the hyporheic zone of a meandering bend, were carried out during a summer flood

Due to the interaction between upstream discharge and astronomical tides in tidal reaches, the typhoon-induced storm surge processes are quite different from that in other coastal regions. Investigating the contributions of driving factors is essential to deepen the understanding of storm surges in tidal reaches. In this study, a coupled hydrological-hydrodynamic storm surge model is first developed to explore the main driving factors of storm surges in Makou-Dahengqin tidal reach during the three most influential typhoon events (Hagupit, Hato and Mangkhut). After that, the machine learning me

The range of Arctic tourism supply is continuously increasing with a variety of tourism products on offer. However, climate change is becoming a more prominent issue threatening the operations of tourism businesses and the livelihood of some tourism actors, such as dogsledders. This article aims to fill the descriptive research gap that exists regarding the dependency on the physical environment, climate, and weather for dogsledding activities. This is achieved by studying how climate change may threaten possible climate and weather thresholds for these activities, and how climate change may a

Cichlidogyrus (including Scutogyrus) is the most speciose dactylogyridean monogenean genus known from African and Levantine cichlid fishes (Cichlidae). While its taxonomy is well established, little is known about the phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary history of this ectoparasite, especially from hosts belonging to one of the most impressive vertebrate radiations, the cichlid fishes from the East African Great Lakes and surrounding hydrological systems. Phylogenetic inference based on DNA sequences of the nuclear 18S, internal transcribed spacer 1 and 28S rDNA genes revealed that Cic

To effectively restore the groundwater environment of the Shiping Mine (SPM) area, which is contaminated by acid mine drainage (AMD), a hydrogeochemical conceptual model was constructed based on groundwater chemistry and environmental stable isotopes. The contribution rate of various pollution sources in the groundwater environment was quantitatively analyzed using an optimized stable isotope mass balance model. A total of 68 groups of water samples were collected. The sampling period covered the dry, intermediate, and wet periods of a complete hydrological year. Samples were taken from rain,

Estimates of animal abundance provide essential information for population ecological studies. However, the recording of individuals in the field can be challenging, and accurate estimates require analytical techniques which account for imperfect detection. Here, we quantify local abundances and overall population size of Morelet's crocodiles (Crocodylus moreletii) in the region of Calakmul (Campeche, Mexico), comparing traditional approaches for crocodylians (Minimum Population Size-MPS; King's Visible Fraction Method-VFM) with binomial N-mixture models based on Poisson, zero-inflated Poisson

The Pampean plains in South America are well-known for their livestock and agricultural productivity. The peri-urban watershed of El Pescado Creek (Central-Eastern Argentina) has been significantly modified in the last few years due to local land-use changes. This work aims to analyze the dynamics of nutrient content associated with the surface water-groundwater relationship in this watershed and to define the trophic state of the watercourse. Sampling sites were selected for both surface water and groundwater analyses, and field surveys were carried out during the spring and summer of 2017. H

Groundwater contamination by microplastics (MPs) has been gradually regarded as a potential human health risk, which calls for detailed investigation of MPs transport behavior in saturated zone. In this study, a series of sand column experiments were carried out to investigate the transport characteristics of large MPs with its diameter of 10-20 μm in porous media, in which the effects of different hydrological conditions and MPs characteristics were examined. Experimental results showed that the increase of water flow rate from 2.2 to 7.5 mL/min significantly increased the maximal outlet MPs

Understanding the occurrence and fate of antibiotics from different categories is vital to predict their environmental exposure and risks. This study presents the spatiotemporal occurrence of 45 multi-class antibiotics and their associations with suspended particulate matter (SPM) in Xiaoqing River (XRB) and Yellow River (YRB) via 10-month monitoring in East China. Thirty-five and 31 antibiotics were detected in XRB and YRB, respectively. Among them, fluoroquinolones (FQs) had the highest total mean concentration (up to 24.8 μg/L in XRB and 15.4 μg/L in YRB), followed by sulfonamides (SAs) (14

Polluted sediments retained in water reservoirs are potential sources of deleterious materials downstream, especially during floods or flushing flows (FFs). Their interaction with these events is important for determining potential risks and evaluating management actions. In the Ebro River, the Flix Reservoir accumulated a deposit of more than 3 × 105 t of industrial waste with high Hg concentrations. Because suspended particulate matter (SPM) is the main driver of Hg pollution downriver, this study analyses the transport of particulate matter and Hg pollution from the Flix Reservoir to the Eb

Toxic metals have been linked to a range of adverse health effects in freshwater organisms. However, for higher vertebrates, there is little understanding of the large-scale drivers of exposure. We quantified toxic metal/semi-metal concentrations in a sentinel freshwater top predator, the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), across England and Wales, and determined how this varied with key natural and anthropogenic factors. We related liver concentrations in 278 otters that died between 2006 and 2017 to habitat biogeochemistry, proximity to point source contamination and to biological characteristics

Regenerative stormwater conveyance (RSC) is a recently developed stormwater control measure that marries the concepts of bioretention and stream restoration. RSC mitigates stormwater runoff by converting surface flow to subsurface seepage using a series of pools and riffles built over a sand media bed. Subsurface seepage flows through media and exits the RSC beneath the outlet weir. Previous studies on RSC pollutant mitigation have focused on surface flow discharges from the RSC. To date, no known research has been conducted on the potential pollutant contributions of RSC seepage, despite the

BACKGROUND: In anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated glomerulonephritis, antigen specificity varies between myeloperoxidase (MPO) and proteinase 3 (PR3). This has been reported to vary in relation to age, gender, geography and extrarenal manifestations. However, studies are difficult to compare as criteria for inclusion vary. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between ANCA serotype, latitude, ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels, age, gender and renal function at diagnosis in a large study with uniform inclusion criteria.

Large-scale assessments are valuable in identifying primary factors controlling total mercury (THg) and monomethyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations, and distribution in aquatic ecosystems. Bed sediment THg and MeHg concentrations were compiled for >16,000 samples collected from aquatic habitats throughout the West between 1965 and 2013. The influence of aquatic feature type (canals, estuaries, lakes, and streams), and environmental setting (agriculture, forest, open-water, range, wetland, and urban) on THg and MeHg concentrations was examined. THg concentrations were highest in lake (29.3±6.5μgkg
