It is commonly assumed that size constancy-invariance of perceived size of objects as they change retinal size because of changes in distance-depends solely on retinal stimulation and vergence, but on no other action-related signals. Distance to an object can change through displacement of either the observer or the object. The common assumption predicts that the two types of displacement should lead to the same degree of size constancy. We measured size constancy while observers viewed stationary stimuli at different distances. Changes in distance between trials were either actively produced

The concept of "shared representations" suggests the existence of a common representation network between self and other. Strong support for this theory is derived from the discovery in the monkey of a population of neurons, which encode object-directed actions performed by oneself and by others. In the human, the issue of "shared representations" has been raised in brain-damaged studies, in particular in the setting of "pointing to body parts" disorders. According to the dominant view, body part designation engages a shared representation system, which encodes the visuospatial characteristics

A moving stimulus is normally required to elicit smooth pursuit eye movements that serve to keep the retinal image of moving objects on the fovea. Recent experiments have shown that in cases where motion cues are ambiguous, pursuit eye movements tend to agree in direction and speed with the percept of motion. Here, we exploit the motion aftereffect (MAE) to show for the first time that smooth pursuit eye movements can also be elicited by the illusory motion of a stationary stimulus. After prolonged exposure to a moving stimulus, subjects show reliable pursuit of a physically stationary stimulu

Contrast can affect the apparent speed of a moving stimulus. Specifically, when a grey square drifts steadily across stationary black and white stripes, it appears to stop and start as its contrast changes--the so-called 'footsteps illusion'. We now show that what matters is the contrast of the leading and trailing edges, not of the lateral edges. The stripes act by altering the stimulus contrast, and are not merely stationary landmarks. Back and forth apparent motion appears smaller in amplitude at low contrasts, even on a spatially uniform (non-striped) surround, and this is a specific motio

When errors are present in the perceived depth between the parts of a physically stationary object, the object appears to rotate as the head is moved laterally (Gogel, 1980). This illusory rotation has been attributed either to compensation (Wallach, 1985, 1987) or to inferential-like processes (Rock, 1983). Alternatively, the perceived distances of and directions to the parts of the object are sufficient to explain the illusory perceived orientations and perceived rotations of the stimulus. This was examined in three experiments. In Experiment 1, a perceived illusory orientation of a stimulus

The Charles Bonnet syndrome is a condition in which individuals experience complex visual hallucinations without demonstrable psychopathology or disturbance of normal consciousness. An analysis of the sixty-four cases described in the literature reveals that the syndrome can occur at any age though it is more common in elderly people. Reduction in vision, due to peripheral eye pathology as well as pathology within the brain, is associated with the syndrome. Individual hallucinatory episodes can last from a few seconds to most of the day. Episodes can occur for periods of time ranging from days

An analysis of the role that casual after-images play in starwalk (marche-en-étoile) tests, shows that these can be turned from unreliable into reliable tests. The vestibular function test described in this article is as follows: (a) the individual walks with open eyes to a point of reference 5 m distant. On arrival, he closes his eyes and walks backward and forward according to the marche-en-étoile procedure. (b) Same procedure as (a), but now the orientation point is replaced by a light source that is switched off when the patient reaches it. (c) Same procedure as (b), but now the patient is

A 36-year-old man with prolonged confusion developed after psychomotor status was reported. He had no past history of epileptic seizures or psychotic disorders. The status continued for 20 hours, and twilight state and a slight fever lasted for about 10 days. Thereafter gross impairment of memory and disorientation became remarkable, and, in addition, strong psychic and autonomic disturbances developed, such as visual and auditory hallucinations, excessive excitement, disturbance of sleep, polyphagia, polydypsia, polyuria and hyperhidrosis. The CT scan, carotide angiography, CSF examination, a

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) can lead to pronounced behavioral and psychological symptoms. A 75-year-old woman presented with forgetfulness and visual hallucination, frequently reporting that a man in white clothing appeared and then departed. On one occasion, she knocked on a resident's door in an apartment building, prompting a police call from the occupant. Treatment with donepezil and memantine proved effective; however, the symptoms improved with the initiation of day care. An 80-year-old woman exhibited incoherent speech and developed optical illusions. She occasionally displayed viol…

Automated gambling products are now a common feature on many casino floors. Despite their increasing prevalence, little research has considered the impact of converting games traditionally free from technological enhancements to automated versions. This review seeks to illustrate how automation is likely to change the way people engage and experience traditional games based around five prominent modifications: visual and auditory enhancements; illusions of control; cognitive complexity; expedited play; and social customisation. Otherwise known as the "VICES" framework. The inclusion of rich gr…

With congruent stimulation of one's limb together with a fake counterpart, an illusory self-attribution of the fake limb can be induced. Such illusions have brought profound insights into the cognitive and neuronal mechanisms underlying temporary changes in body representation, but to put them in perspective, they need to be compared with ownership as experienced for one's real body. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare the neuronal correlates of touch under different degrees of body ownership. Participants' left and right arms were stimulated either alone or togethe…

PURPOSE: Hyperglycemia may rarely be seen with visual seizures. Observation of both visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in visual status epilepticus (SE) has not been reported. We describe acute and follow-up VEP and MRI findings of a patient with hyperglycemia-related visual SE of occipital origin.

RESULTS: Neurologic examination revealed ictal nystagmus to the right and conti…

There is increasing evidence that the impairment of consciousness by anesthetic drugs does not always lead to its complete absence and that the loss of subjective experience with anesthesia may at times be an illusion created by amnesia. However, the study of how anesthetic drugs cause amnesia, and importantly how they fail, has received less attention than the other cardinal properties of anesthesia. There is no reliable biomarker to determine the adequacy of pharmacologic amnesia in real time. Anesthetic drugs can influence all stages of memory formation and recall, and their amnestic effect

Objects displaced intermittently across the visual field will nonetheless give an illusion of continuous motion [called apparent motion (AM)] under many common conditions. It is believed that form perception is of minor importance in determining AM, and that AM is mediated by motion-sensitive areas in the "where" pathway of the cortex. However, form and motion typically interact in specific ways when natural objects move through the environment. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure cortical activation to long-range AM, compared to short-range AM and flicker, while we varied
