How does testing affect retrieval-related processes? An event-related potential (ERP) study on the short-term effects of repeated retrieval.

The testing effect is conceptualized as the benefit for remembering items that were studied and tested rather than just studied. Thus far, little is known about the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms. In an event-related potential (ERP) study, we investigated the immediate consequences of testing on recollection processes. During an initial study phase, participants encountered object names together with pictures of the denoted objects ("perceived items") or with the instruction to mentally visualize them ("imagined items"). Directly afterward, they had to differentiate between perceived, im

Tissue-specific differences in the spatial interposition of X-chromosome and 3R chromosome regions in the malaria mosquito Anopheles messeae Fall.

Spatial organization of a chromosome in a nucleus is very important in biology but many aspects of it are still generally unresolved. We focused on tissue-specific features of chromosome architecture in closely related malaria mosquitoes, which have essential inter-specific differences in polytene chromosome attachments in nurse cells. We showed that the region responsible for X-chromosome attachment interacts with nuclear lamina stronger in nurse cells, then in salivary glands cells in Anopheles messeae Fall. The inter-tissue differences were demonstrated more convincingly in an experiment of

More than a cool illusion? Functional significance of self-motion illusion (circular vection) for perspective switches.

Self-motion can facilitate perspective switches and "automatic spatial updating" and help reduce disorientation in applications like virtual reality (VR). However, providing physical motion through moving-base motion simulators or free-space walking areas comes with high cost and technical complexity. This study provides first evidence that merely experiencing an embodied illusion of self-motion ("circular vection") can provide similar behavioral benefits as actual self-motion: Blindfolded participants were asked to imagine facing new perspectives in a well-learned room, and point to previousl

Brain systems underlying encounter expectancy bias in spider phobia.

Spider-phobic individuals are characterized by exaggerated expectancies to be faced with spiders (so-called encounter expectancy bias). Whereas phobic responses have been linked to brain systems mediating fear, little is known about how the recruitment of these systems relates to exaggerated expectancies of threat. We used fMRI to examine spider-phobic and control participants while they imagined visiting different locations in a forest after having received background information about the likelihood of encountering different animals (spiders, snakes, and birds) at these locations. Critically

Cortical involvement in a gait-related imagery task: comparison between Parkinson's disease and normal aging.

PURPOSE: We employed imaginary tasks to investigate the neurophysiology of gait in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: Cortical activation of gait-related imagery was explored in 13 PD patients, 13 age-matched controls (Old), and 14 young volunteers (Young) using fMRI. The tasks included gait initiation, stepping over an obstacle and gait termination using an event-related design. Subjects watched a video clip showing an actor walking and imagined the walking process. RESULTS: At gait initiation, no significant difference could

Sexy thoughts: effects of sexual cognitions on testosterone, cortisol, and arousal in women.

Previous research suggests that sexual stimuli increase testosterone (T) in women and shows inconsistent effects of sexual arousal on cortisol (C), but effects of cognitive aspects of arousal, rather than behaviors or sensory stimuli, are unclear. The present study examined whether sexual thoughts affect T or C and whether hormonal contraceptive (HC) use moderated this effect, given mixed findings of HC use confounding hormone responses. Participants (79 women) provided a baseline saliva sample for radioimmunoassay. We created the Imagined Social Situation Exercise (ISSE) to test effects of im

Yin Yang 1 overexpression in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is associated with B-cell transformation and tumor progression.

UNLABELLED: With advances in intracranial recording techniques, converting speech-related brain activity into commands for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) is becoming increasingly feasible. In this study, we explored the utility of stereoencephalography (sEEG) for decoding covert and overt speech in humans. sEEG data were collected from 11 epilepsy patients undergoing presurgical monitoring, while they performed a set of speech tasks-overt speech, articulated speech, and imagined (inner) speech, as well as a handwriting task. Time- and frequency-domain analyses revealed that each speech condi

Interhemispheric transfer of phosphenes generated by occipital versus parietal transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Phosphenes represent a perceptual effect of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) or electric stimulation of visual cortical areas. One likely neural basis for the generation of static phosphenes is the primary visual cortex (V1) although evidence is controversial. A peculiar feature of V1 is that it has sparse callosal connections with the exception of a central portion of visual field representation. In contrast, visually responsive cortical areas in the parietal lobe have widespread callosal connections. Thus, interhemispheric transfer (IT) time of off-centre phosphenes should be slower w

Relative contribution of DNA repair, cell cycle checkpoints, and cell death to survival after DNA damage in Drosophila larvae.

BACKGROUND: Components of the DNA damage checkpoint are essential for surviving exposure to DNA damaging agents. Checkpoint activation leads to cell cycle arrest, DNA repair, and apoptosis in eukaryotes. Cell cycle regulation and DNA repair appear essential for unicellular systems to survive DNA damage. The relative importance of these responses and apoptosis for surviving DNA damage in multicellular organisms remains unclear. RESULTS: After exposure to ionizing radiation, wild-type Drosophila larvae regulate the cell cycle and repair DNA; grp (DmChk1) mutants cannot regulate the cell cycle b

Imaging the mental components of a planning task.

The Tower of London task (TOL) has been widely used to assess the ability to plan. We used H(2)O(15)-positron emission tomography to isolate some of the cognitive components of the task. Ten male volunteers were scanned twice in each of six conditions. In two conditions (plan) the subjects had to plan the best solution to TOL problems. In two other conditions (plan-control) the subjects were required to generate four moves without being constrained by a goal. In plan and plan-control tasks the subjects either planned the moves and then executed them (MOVE conditions) or imagined the necessary

Developmental changes of the antenna and its neurons in the silkworm, Bombyx mori, with special regard to larval-pupal transformation.

The larval antenna of Bombyx mori has 13 sensilla and about 52 sensory neurons in its distal portion. The axons form two nerve cords which unite in the cranial hemocoel to supply the brain as the olfactory nerve. The antennal imaginal disc, which is a thick pseudostratified epithelium continuous with the antennal epidermis, thickens markedly during the 5th instar by rapid cell proliferation. At the prepupal stage cell proliferation ceases and the disc everts to form a large pupal antenna. Simultaneously, an extensive cell rearrangement occurs in the antennal epidermis and the disc tissue becom

Do you feel me? Autism, empathic accuracy and the double empathy problem.

Empathy deficits in autism, particularly cognitive empathy, have been a long-held, but much debated assumption. An alternative perspective challenging this deficit model is the 'double empathy problem', proposing that empathy difficulties are bidirectional between autistic and non-autistic people. Despite this view gaining popularity, there has been limited research examining whether non-autistic people can empathise accurately, cognitively and affectively with autistic people. Addressing this gap, 81 adults from the general population, divided into groups based on how likely they are to share

A global response contributes to tissue size robustness upon local induction of apoptosis.

Tissue resilience requires tight coupling between cell proliferation, growth, and death.1,2,3,4It is assumed to be based on compensatory proliferation, where local mitogenic signals and mechanical inputs generated by dying cells promote the proliferation of neighboring cells.5,6,7,8,9,10,11 Compensatory proliferation was mostly studied in the Drosophila larval wing primordium (the wing disc) upon massive death induction in large domains,12 irradiation,13,14 surgical tissue ablation,15,16 or genetic perturbation of apoptosis execution.8,17 Similar principles were outlined in hydra,18Drosophila

Prescription of Graded Motor Imagery for People With Chronic Pain: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: This scoping review investigates how graded motor imagery (GMI) and its individual components (left/right judgments, imagined movements and mirror therapy) are applied in clinical trials for people with chronic pain conditions. Understanding how GMI is prescribed is essential to guide its standardization and optimization for clinical practice. METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Database of controlled trials, PubMed, CINAHL, Embase and PsycINFO from inception to May 2024 for randomized controlled trials published in English that examined the effects of GMI or its components either a

Can positive mental imagery help high worriers stop worrying? An experimental test.

Replacing worry with images of positive outcomes reduces negative intrusions, worry and trait anxiety in GAD. However, the possibility that replacing worry with positive imagery, unrelated to worry content, can terminate a stream of worry has not been tested. High worriers (N = 201) were randomly allocated to receive training to replace worry with an unrelated positive image (active condition) or a control condition. Participants completed the stop worry task (SWT) in which they were instructed to engage in worry, and then stop worrying. Participants in the active condition were asked to bring

Mental imagery and its role in the psychopathology and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder: A systematic review and narrative synthesis.

Whilst intrusive mental images are recognised within diagnostic descriptions of obsessions in OCD, research remains limited, with most work focusing on intrusive thoughts. Moreover, it has been suggested that mental imagery might represent a distinct form of OCD symptomatology and could potentially be harnessed to treat symptoms. We performed a systematic review, adopting a two-phased approach, to examine the role of mental imagery in both the psychopathology and treatment of OCD. First, we explored the characteristics and pathological features of intrusive imagery in OCD. Second, we evaluated

The effects of action observation and motor imagery on students' ability to identify anatomical locations: a randomised control trial.

PURPOSE: Action observation (AO) and motor imagery (MI) are two forms of mental practice that can facilitate motor learning. We investigated if mental practice techniques (AO vs. combined AO+MI) can improve entry-level healthcare students' ability to locate anatomical structures in the immediate and short-term. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Within a randomised control trial design, participants received a traditional anatomy lecture (Control, n = 13), or lecture plus AO (n = 13), or lecture plus combined AO+MI (n = 12). Mental practice involved either watching a physiotherapist's demonstration of (A

Tropical climate and time of day: A dual influence on implicit motor imagery ability.

OBJECTIVE: Mental rotation (MR), which requires cognitive manipulation and spatial transformation of imagined object, is a form of implicit mental imagery that is useful in spatial reasoning and problem solving. As MR ability can be affected by thermal stress, we aimed to evaluate the effects of both the time of day and the TC on MR performance in tropical climate. METHODS: A sample of 36 participants acclimatized to a tropical climate performed a MR test under two environmental counterbalanced conditions (tropical climate - TC versus air conditioning - AC) at four times throughout the day (7

The effect of nature on creativity through mental imagery.

Immersion in nature has been linked to wide-ranging benefits on mental health and cognitive functions, from reducing stress to enhancing creativity. However, a walk in nature is not always feasible, and whether a proxy for nature immersion via a mental walk in nature can elicit the same benefits as a physical walk remains largely unknown. Accordingly, the current study utilized guided imagery to examine whether a mental walk in nature would improve creativity in general and when compared to a mental walk in an urban environment. We implemented a within-subjects design, wherein participants com
