The associations between childhood dance participation and adult disordered eating and related psychopathology.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between childhood dance participation and adult eating behavior and psychological health. METHODS: A total of 546 undergraduate females at a large Midwestern university completed questionnaires regarding eating behavior and associated features, depression, self-esteem, and body image. RESULTS: Women who participated in childhood dance are more likely to score higher on measures of bulimic behaviors than nondancers. In addition, childhood dancers indicated greater drive for thinness and poorer impulse control compared to nondancers. Furthermore, there wa

Behavioral and cognitive subtypes of ADHD.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity symptoms are observed by teachers in 9.2% of a nonreferred elementary school population. Two subtypes of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a cognitive form and a behavioral form, are identified. The behavioral subtype includes about 80% of those identified and is characterized by distinct clinical phenomenology of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. These children can be described on a continuum of severity, with the most severe showing behavioral features indistinguishable from conduct disorder. Children with behavioral subtypes of ADHD

The Relationship Between Impulsivity, Anxiety and Internet Addiction in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Moderated Mediation Model.

We aimed to examine the relationship between impulsivity and Internet Addiction (IA) evaluating autism symptoms, inattention, hyperactivity, loneliness, anxiety, and depression in adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). We also investigated whether symptoms of autism, anxiety or depression moderate and/or mediate the relationship between impulsivity and study variables in predicting the severity of IA. Participants (n = 46 adolescents with ASD, ages 12-18) were assessed through Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ), Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scales, Turgay DSM-IV-

Atomoxetine Reduces Decisional Impulsivity in Human Cocaine Addiction.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a well-known determinant of maladaptive behavior in cocaine use disorder (CUD), but there are currently no effective strategies for managing excessive impulsivity. Growing evidence from preclinical and clinical studies suggests that atomoxetine, a selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, is effective in improving impulse control in both healthy individuals and individuals with neuropsychiatric conditions. METHODS: We investigated the effects of atomoxetine on decisional impulsivity in patients with CUD. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover

Impulsivity as a Risk Factor for Addictive Disorder Severity during the COVID-19 Lockdown: Results from a Mixed Quantitative and Qualitative Study.

Interindividual differences in personality traits, especially impulsivity traits, are robust risk factors for addictive disorders. However, their impact on addictive disorders during the COVID-19 lockdown remains unknown. This study assessed patients being followed for addictive disorders before the lockdown. We aimed to determine whether impulsivity traits (i.e., negative- and positive urgency) were associated with addictive disorders severity during the lockdowns. We also explored the patients' subjective experiences, focusing on high versus low impulsivity. The quantitative study assessed 4

Impulse-control disorders in alcoholics are related to sensation seeking and not to impulsivity.

Impulse-control disorders (ICD) include intermittent explosive disorder, kleptomania, trichotillomania, pyromania and pathological gambling. Several studies have suggested that the incidence of pathological gambling and impulsive violent behavior is substantially higher in alcohol-dependent patients than in the general population. The association between ICD and alcoholism, as well as personality characteristics such as sensation seeking and impulsivity, has never been systematically studied. The present study compared the levels of impulsivity and sensation seeking in age- and sex-matched gro

Exploring social impairment in those with opioid use disorder: linking impulsivity, childhood trauma, and the prefrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Challenges with social functioning, which is a hallmark of opioid use disorder (OUD), are a drawback in treatment adherence and maintenance. Yet, little research has explored the underlying mechanisms of this impairment. Impulsivity and corresponding neural alterations may be at the center of this issue. Childhood adversity, which has been linked to both impulsivity and poorer treatment outcomes, could also affect this relationship. This study explores the relationship between impulsivity, social functioning, and their neural correlates in the prefrontal cortex, while examining the

Pathways to HIV-Related Behavior Among Heterosexual, Rural Black Men: A Person-Centered Analysis.

We investigated the psychosocial mechanisms linking personal and contextual risk factors to HIV-related behavior among 498 rural Black men. We characterized HIV-related behavior in terms of profile groups and hypothesized that contextual and personal risk factors (childhood adversity, community disadvantage, incarceration, and racial discrimination) would predict HIV-related behavior indirectly via two psychosocial mechanisms: impulsivity and negative relational schemas. Study results documented three HIV-related behavior profile groups. The Safer group reported low levels of risky behavior. T

Symptoms characteristics of personality disorders associated with suicidal ideation and behaviors in a clinical sample of adolescents with a depressive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Pathological personality traits have repeatedly been identified as important risk factors for suicidal ideation and behaviors. Moreover, impulsive-aggressive traits, have shown a consistent association with suicidal behaviors across the lifespan. Adolescence represents a critical period for the emergence of different personality traits, mood disorders, and suicidal behaviors, but the relationship between these variables remain poorly understood. METHODS: These variables were examined in a cross-sectional case-control design involving three groups: 30 adolescents with a depressiv

Functional and dysfunctional impulsivities changes after subthalamic nucleus-deep brain stimulation in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated changes of impulsivity after deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, distinguishing functional from dysfunctional impulsivity and their contributing factors. METHODS: Data of 33 PD patients treated by STN-DBS were studied before and 6 months after surgery: motor impairment, medication (dose and dopaminergic agonists), cognition, mood and occurrence of impulse control disorders. Impulsivity was assessed by the Dickman Impulsivity Inventory, which distinguishes functional impulsivity (FI), reflecting the pot

Developments in impulse control behaviours of Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Impulse control behaviours (ICBs) are a frequent comorbidity for patients with Parkinson's disease. They consist of impulse control disorders, dopamine dysregulation syndrome, and punding. The field continues to evolve in the understanding of impulsivity and assessment of risk factors in the development of these behaviours and their appropriate management in patients with Parkinson's disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Impulsivity is a multifaceted concept that is surprisingly common in untreated patients with Parkinson's disease. The incidence of ICBs increases with demographic, cli

Multidimensional components of impulsivity during early adolescence: Relationships with brain networks and future substance-use in the Adolescent Brian and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study.

Impulsivity is a multifaceted construct that typically increases during adolescence and is implicated in risk for substance use disorders that develop later in life. Here, we take a multivariate approach to identify latent dimensions of impulsivity, broadly defined, among youth enrolled in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study and explore associations with individual differences in demographics, substance-use initiation and canonical resting state networks (N=11,872, ages ~9-10). Using principal component analysis, we identified eight latent impulsivity dimensions, the to

Early childhood impulsivity and parenting predict children's development of externalizing psychopathology.

Parenting and child impulsivity are consistent predictors of children's externalizing symptoms; however, the role of the range of parenting (i.e., variation in parenting across contexts), and its interactions with child impulsivity, are poorly understood. We examined whether characteristic parenting practices and parenting range predicted the course of externalizing symptoms in 409 children (Mage = 3.43 years at baseline, 208 girls) across ages 3, 5, 8, and 11. We assessed parent positive affectivity (PPA), hostility, and parenting structure at child age 3 using three behavioral tasks that var

Screening for Problematic Internet Use May Help Identify Impulse Control Disorders in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease (PD) represent emerging problems with potentially devastating consequences. The standard screening methods for impulse control disorders are clinically imperfect. Although it is rarely reported, many patients utilize the Internet to fulfill their compulsive behaviors because of its easy accessibility. We designed a study to test the hypothesis that an active screening for excessive Internet use and Internet addiction might improve the sensitivity of identification of impulse control disorders. METHODS: The standard screening method

Impulse control disorder comorbidity among patients with bipolar I disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Impulsivity is associated with mood instability, behavioral problems, and action without planning in patients with bipolar disorder. Increased impulsivity levels are reported at all types of mood episodes. This association suggests a high comorbidity between impulse control disorders (ICDs) and bipolar disorder. The aim of this study is to compare the prevalence of ICDs and associated clinical and sociodemographic variables in euthymic bipolar I patients. METHOD: A total of 124 consecutive bipolar I patients who were recruited from regular attendees from the outpatient clinic of ou

The moderating role of impulsivity in the association between sexual abuse and substance use frequency across countries, gender identities, and sexual orientations.

This study examined how impulsivity moderates the relationship between sexual abuse and substance use frequency in a large international sample. Participants (N = 64,472) completed the Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST-11), the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale, and sexual abuse measures through the International Sex Survey. Structural equation models tested associations between childhood sexual abuse (CSA), adolescent/adult sexual abuse (AASA), and combined exposure with substance use frequency, and explored moderation by impulsivity across gender identity, sexu…

The Genoeconomics of Impulsive Intertemporal Choice: A Critical Review.

Dr. Warren Bickel tirelessly investigated delay discounting (DD), a behavioral economic index of impulsive decision making, as a determinant of numerous health outcomes. Among the factors that contribute to a person's level of DD, a burgeoning body of research has illuminated its genetic foundations and the extent to which it may be a mechanistically informative phenotype for genetic contributions to addiction, obesity, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and a wide array of other health behaviors. In this review, we provide a concise history of quantification of DD as a human decision-m

Plasma concentration of leptin is related to food addiction in gambling disorder: Clinical and neuropsychological implications.

BACKGROUND: Data implicate overlaps in neurobiological pathways involved in appetite regulation and addictive disorders. Despite different neuroendocrine measures having been associated with both gambling disorder (GD) and food addiction (FA), how appetite-regulating hormones may relate to the co-occurrence of both entities remain incompletely understood. AIMS: To compare plasma concentrations of ghrelin, leptin, adiponectin, and liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP-2) between patients with GD, with and without FA, and to explore the association between circulating hormonal concentra
