Hunger Tradeoffs and Coping Strategies Among Families with Food Insecurity in Massachusetts.

Background/Objectives: Many individuals facing food insecurity make tradeoff decisions between spending money on food or other basic needs. In addition, many engage in coping strategies to stretch food budgets or make food last longer. There is limited data on how participation in food assistance programs is associated with use of tradeoffs or coping strategies among households experiencing food insecurity. Methods: A secondary analysis of 2021, 2022 and 2023 cross-sectional state-wide survey on food access, including questions on use of tradeoffs and coping mechanisms, and participation in fo

Identifying behavior mediators influencing caregivers of infants participating in an mhealth intervention: qualitative evaluation of the Baby-Feed trial through interviews.

BACKGROUND: There are only a few online infant nutrition interventions based on a behavior change theory, and none have used a thematic analysis to understand which constructs may have contributed to behavioral change. We developed an online infant nutrition education web platform (Baby-Feed) based on the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). This qualitative study aimed to identify among participants of the Baby-Feed intervention arm, which SCT behavior mediators (self-efficacy, outcome expectations, observational learning, and incentive motivation) influenced them to move them from intention into a

Impact of Maternal Moringa oleifera Leaf Supplementation on Milk and Serum Vitamin A and Carotenoid Concentrations in a Cohort of Breastfeeding Kenyan Women and Their Infants.

Background: Childhood vitamin A deficiency leads to increased morbidity and mortality. Human milk is the only source of vitamin A for exclusively breastfed infants. Dried Moringa oleifera leaf powder (moringa) is a good food source of provitamin A and other carotenoids. Its effect during lactation on human milk vitamin A and carotenoid content is unclear. Objectives: Our objective was to investigate the effect of maternal moringa consumption on human milk retinol and carotenoid concentrations and maternal and infant vitamin A status. Methods: We conducted a 3-month pilot single-blinded cluster

Recurrent intestinal ischemia following surgery for gastric and duodenal perforations: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) is a risk factor for various gastrointestinal complications. In the recent decades, advances in medicine have increased the survival of ELBW infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). To our knowledge, there have been no reports of neonates or infants developing simultaneous gastric and duodenal perforations and later developing NEC. We report a case of an extremely low birth weight infant (ELBWI) who developed both gastric and duodenal perforations at the same time and developed NEC after operation for gastric and duodenal perforations. CASE P

Well-Child Care: Newborns and Infants.

Well-child care for newborns and infants (birth to 12 months) allows clinicians to identify any abnormalities in growth and development, administer vaccinations, and provide anticipatory guidance. History should focus on feeding, stooling, and sleeping. Trends in infant growth over time should be observed. Infants require a comprehensive physical examination to assess for normal development. Caregivers should be counseled on vaccination practices and their importance for disease prevention with adherence to standard schedules. Vaccine hesitancy should be addressed. Clinicians should review or

[Determining the levels of staphylococcal enterotoxins types A and B in food products by the immunoenzyme method].

"Sandwich" variant of ELISA was used to identify staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE), types A and B, in S. aureus filtrates inducing food poisoning, in extracts of the lactic acid product for infants "Biphilin" that caused staphylococcal infection, and in foods contaminated with SE in varying concentrations. It has been shown that ELISA used for SE identification in foods permits revealing SE, types A and B, in liquid products in concentrations of 1-2 ng/ml (that is 1000-fold more sensitive, than the immunodiffusion test, 400-800-fold more sensitive than the passive hemagglutination test, and 10-

Macronutrients, Micronutrients, and Malnutrition: Effects of Nutrition on Immune Function in Infants and Young Children.

The function of the immune system is not only dependent on factors like genetics, age, the environment, and exposure to infectious agents and allergens but also on our microbiota and our diet. It has been known for centuries that food can influence health and vulnerability to infection. This is especially true for infants, young children, and the elderly. This review focuses on how nutrition can support immune function from gestation to school-aged children. Immune support begins during pregnancy by the mother's diet and transfer of nutritional components as well as antibodies to her fetus. Af

VITALITY - a longitudinal cohort established to assess the role of postnatal vitamin D supplementation in atopic disease and immune health.

VITALITY was established as a single-centre, doubleblind, randomised controlled trial (RCT) to determine whether daily supplementation of 400 International Units (IU) of vitamin D in the first year of life reduces the prevalence of food allergy at 12 months of age, compared to placebo. It recruited 2739 healthy, term, breastfed infants from 2014 to 2022 in Greater Melbourne, Australia. With an overall high retention rate despite the COVID-19 pandemic of over 83%, VITALITY is a rich cohort with extensive samples and data at baseline (six-12 weeks) and at six-, nine- and 12-months of age. From mother's plate to newborn's health: dietary patterns and pregnancy outcomes-a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal nutrition during pregnancy significantly influences both maternal and neonatal health outcomes, yet distinct dietary patterns and their impacts remain underexplored. The objective of this study was to identify dietary patterns during pregnancy and to investigate associations between these patterns and pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: We analyzed data from 1404 pregnant women in the LIFE Child cohort (Germany, 2011-2025) who completed a Food Frequency Questionnaire. To identify food groups and dietary patterns, hierarchical clustering was applied. Linear and logistic models we

CRM rapid response approach for the certification of arsenic species and toxic trace elements in baby cereal coarse rice flour certified reference material BARI-1.

With recently legislated maximum levels of inorganic arsenic (iAs) in white and brown rice in Canada, the regulatory bodies are evaluating the need for regulation of As levels in infant food products. Rice is a major part of infants' diet, and therefore, the presence of As in this staple food causes concerns. So far, the scientific community was lacking suitable certified reference material (CRM) which could be used to assess the accuracy of developed analytical methods for As speciation in infants' food products. As a result, we have developed BARI-1, a baby cereal coarse rice flour reference…
