Nucleated red blood cells and serum lactate values on days 2 and 5 are associated with mortality and morbidity in VLBW infants.

AIM: To correlate nucleated red blood cell counts and serum lactate concentrations on day 2 and 5 of life with morbidity and mortality in very low birth weight infants and to determine corresponding cutoff values. METHODS: Retrospective analysis in a cohort of very low birth weight infants. RESULTS: 250 very low birth weight infants were included in this study. Gestational age ranged from 23 to 35 weeks (mean 29.04) and birth weight was 320-1500 g (mean 1047.9). 55 (22%) patients developed intraventricular hemorrhage, 55 (22%) bronchopulmonary dysplasia, 12 (4.8%) periventricular leukomalaci

Acute Kidney Injury Impairs Postnatal Renal Adaptation and Increases Morbidity and Mortality in Very Low-Birth-Weight Infants.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to estimate the impact of acute kidney injury (AKI) on postnatal renal adaptation, morbidity, and mortality in very low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants. DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective study of 457 VLBW infants admitted to a tertiary level neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) between July 2009 and April 2015. We compared patient characteristics, risk factors, serum creatinine trends, and adverse outcomes in infants with and without AKI using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Incidence of AKI was 19.5%. On multivariate analysis, postnatal risk fact

Mortality and Major Morbidity of Very-Low-Birth-Weight Infants in Germany 2008-2012: A Report Based on Administrative Data.

BACKGROUND: Expectant parents of very preterm infants, physicians, and policy makers require estimates for chances of survival and survival without morbidity. Such estimates should derive from a large, reliable, and contemporary data base of easily available items known at birth. OBJECTIVE: To determine short-term outcome and risk factors in very-low-birth-weight preterm infants based on administrative data. METHODS: Anonymized routine data sets transmitted from hospital administrations to statutory health insurance companies were used to assess survival and survival free of major morbiditie

Association between admission temperature and mortality and major morbidity in preterm infants born at fewer than 33 weeks' gestation.

IMPORTANCE: Neonatal hypothermia has been associated with higher mortality and morbidity; therefore, thermal control following delivery is an essential part of neonatal care. Identifying the ideal body temperature in preterm neonates in the first few hours of life may be helpful to reduce the risk for adverse outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between admission temperature and neonatal outcomes and estimate the admission temperature associated with lowest rates of adverse outcomes in preterm infants born at fewer than 33 weeks' gestation. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retr

Comparison of morbidity and mortality of very low birth weight infants in a Central Hospital in Johannesburg between 2006/2007 and 2013.

BACKGROUND: Health protocols need to be guided by current data on survival and benefits of interventions within the local context. Periodic clinical audits are required to inform and update health care protocols. This study aimed to review morbidity and mortality in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants in 2013 compared with similar data from 2006/2007. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients' records from a neonatal computer database for 562 VLBW infants. These neonates weighed between 500 and 1500 g at birth, and were admitted within 48 hours after birth between 01 January 2

B-type natriuretic peptide and mortality in extremely low birth weight infants with pulmonary hypertension: a retrospective cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a strong predictor of mortality in adult patients with various forms of pulmonary hypertension (PH) and may be a strong prognostic marker in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) associated PH as well. We sought to assess the relationship between BNP levels and all-cause mortality in a cohort of ELBW infants with BPD and PH. METHODS: We retrospectively identified ELBW infants with BPD and PH who had serum BNP levels measured as part of routine clinical care in the neonatal intensive care unit. Peak serum

Impact of maternal diabetes mellitus on mortality and morbidity of very low birth weight infants: a multicenter Latin America study.

OBJECTIVES: To compare mortality and morbidity in very low birth weight infants (VLBWI) born to women with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: This was a cohort study with retrospective data collection (2001-2010, n=11.991) from the NEOCOSUR network. Adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated for the outcome of neonatal mortality and morbidity as a function of maternal DM. Women with no DM served as the reference group. RESULTS: The rate of maternal DM was 2.8% (95% CI: 2.5-3.1), but a significant (p=0.019) increase was observed between 2001-2005 (2.4%, 2.1-2.

Effect of the use of a polyethylene wrap on the morbidity and mortality of very low birth weight infants in Alexandria University Children's Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Thermal management of the very low birth weight (VLBW) infant (<1500 g) is a cornerstone of neonatology because thermal stress is an important determinant of survival. The present study aimed to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and feasibility of applying polyethylene occlusive skin wrapping to prevent hypothermia during resuscitation at birth in VLBW neonates. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Using a quasi experimental nonrandomized study design, 50 preterm VLBW infants were wrapped immediately after birth by low-density polyethylene transparent plastic wraps and another 50 infants were s

[Regionalization of perinatal care helps to reduce neonatal mortality and morbidity in very preterm infants and requires updated information for caregivers].

UNLABELLED: In 1997 a large French epidemiological study (Epipage) showed increased mortality and morbidity in Languedoc Roussillon when compared to other regions of France. In order to update information, we set up a regional database about very preterm infants born in Languedoc-Roussillon since 2003. Our objective was to analyze the evolution of mortality and of the morbidity in very preterm infants between 1997 and 2003-2005. METHODS: We analyzed mortality and the morbidity (respiratory, neurological, digestive) of the very preterm infants born alive between 22 and 32 weeks amenorrhea and

[Effect of the place of birth on mortality and morbidity of the early form of group B streptococcal infection in newborn infants of normal weight].

In a retrospective analysis, 23 newborns (birth weight more than 2000 g) with early-onset group B streptococcal disease were studied. 13 babies had been born in another hospital and were subsequently transferred; these were compared with 10 infants from an adjacent perinatal centre. A paediatrician was present at the birth of the last group of infants, but only once at the birth of a baby born in a hospital not attached to our centre. At admission, the infants transferred from outside, were significantly more distressed, 5 infants died, whereas all infants of the second group survived. Althoug

Reduction of mortality, morbidity, and respiratory distress syndrome in infants weighing less than 1,000 grams by treatment with betamethasone and ritodrine.

The efficacy of betamethasone has been questioned in infants of less than 28 week's gestation. From January 1983 to June 1986, 86 infants weighing 600 to 1,000 g were born at our center. Control of labor was attempted with ritodrine in all patients with less than or equal to 5 cm cervical dilation. If control were obtained, betamethasone was given 30 minutes later. Significant differences were found between the 33 infants born after 24 hours of betamethasone and those delivered before in terms of survival 90.1% v 56.6% (P = .001), respiratory distress syndrome 27.2% v 73.6% (P = .0001), and ne

High malformation rates and decreased mortality in infants of diabetic mothers managed after the first trimester of pregnancy (1956-1978).

Over a period of 23 years we accumulated data on 182 pregnant juvenile diabetic subjects during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Diabetic subjects were evaluated generally after the first trimester of pregnancy. Data examined included diabetic class, maternal complications of pregnancy, and infant morbidity and mortality. Data were analyzed in two periods-before and after 1970. In the second period, maternal polyhydramnios and acidosis rates improved, neonatal problems of homeostasis did not change significantly, and combined fetal and neonatal losses fell from 34.7% to 16.4%. The neonatal malf

Pooled incidence and predictors of infant mortality in low- and middle-income countries using gamma shared frailty model: Insights for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

BACKGROUND: Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) account for a large share of global infant deaths, but there is a lack of evidence on the pooled estimate of infant mortality and its predictors in LMICs. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the pooled incidence of infant mortality and its associated factors in LMICs. METHODS: We used clustered data extracted from the recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS 2018-DHS 2024) of all LMICs. A total of 1,404,826weighted numbers of recent live births were included in the study. A lognormal shared gamma frailty model was employed. We used the …

Infant emergency department visits, readmission, and mortality by maternal anxiety disorder during pregnancy occurring with and without other mental health conditions: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: While a link between maternal anxiety diagnoses and adverse maternal and infant outcomes has been reported, there is a paucity of data regarding infant outcomes through the first year of life in those born to individuals with anxiety only and anxiety comorbid with other mental health conditions. METHOD: The sample included 5,836,541 singleton liveborn infants in California from 2007–2020. Anxiety with and without depression or a non-depression mental health condition during pregnancy were identified from ICD codes from hospital discharge records. Adverse infant outcomes evaluated i

Time of delivery among low-risk women at 37-42 weeks of gestation and risks of stillbirth and infant mortality, and long-term neurological morbidity.

BACKGROUND: The most important knowledge gap in connection with obstetric management for time of delivery in term low-risk pregnancies relates to the absence of information on long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. OBJECTIVES: We examined risks of stillbirth, infant mortality, cerebral palsy (CP) and epilepsy among low-risk pregnancies. METHODS: In this population-based Swedish study, we identified, from 1998 to 2019, 1,773,269 singleton infants born between 37 and 42 completed weeks in women with low-risk pregnancies. Customised and Noncustomised Birth Weight Centiles and Prediction of Stillbirth and Infant Mortality and Morbidity: A Cohort Study of 979,912 Term Singleton Pregnancies in Scotland.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence to support the use of customised centile charts to identify those at risk of stillbirth and infant death at term. We sought to determine birth weight thresholds at which mortality and morbidity increased and the predictive ability of noncustomised (accounting for gestational age and sex) and partially customised centiles (additionally accounting for maternal height and parity) to identify fetuses at risk. METHODS: This is a population-based linkage study of 979,912 term singleton pregnancies in Scotland, United Kingdom, between 1992 and 2010. The main exp
