Vector control of snail-mediated human trematode infections.

Inspite of the recent general acceptance of the use of safe and effective chemotherapeutic drugs in the treatment of major human trematode infections, vector control e.g. control of the snail intermediate host will continue to play an important role in programmes for controlling schistosomiasis, clonorchiasis, opisthorchiasis and paragonimiasis. The main vector control measures are: a) use of chemical pesticides or molluscicides and plants showing molluscicidal properties; b) biological control through introduction of competitor species or natural enemies of snails; c) alteration of the enviro

Costs and possible benefits of a two-tier infection control management strategy consisting of active screening for multidrug-resistant organisms and tailored control measures.

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) are an economic burden, and infection control (IC) measures are cost- and labour-intensive. A two-tier IC management strategy was developed, including active screening, in order to achieve effective use of limited resources. Briefly, high-risk patients were differentiated from other patients, distinguished according to type of MDRO, and IC measures were implemented accordingly. AIM: To evaluate costs and benefits of this IC management strategy. METHODS: The study period comprised 2.5 years. All high-risk patients underwent microbiological scr…

CAPG Is Required for Ebola Virus Infection by Controlling Virus Egress from Infected Cells.

The replication of Ebola virus (EBOV) is dependent upon actin functionality, especially at cell entry through macropinocytosis and at release of virus from cells. Previously, major actin-regulatory factors involved in actin nucleation, such as Rac1 and Arp2/3, were shown important in both steps. However, downstream of nucleation, many other cell factors are needed to control actin dynamics. How these regulate EBOV infection remains largely unclear. Here, we identified the actin-regulating protein, CAPG, as important for EBOV replication. Notably, knockdown of CAPG specifically inhibited viral

The Oral Bacterial Communities of Children with Well-Controlled HIV Infection and without HIV Infection.

The oral microbial community (microbiota) plays a critical role in human health and disease. Alterations in the oral microbiota may be associated with disorders such as gingivitis, periodontitis, childhood caries, alveolar osteitis, oral candidiasis and endodontic infections. In the immunosuppressed population, the spectrum of potential oral disease is even broader, encompassing candidiasis, necrotizing gingivitis, parotid gland enlargement, Kaposi's sarcoma, oral warts and other diseases. Here, we used 454 pyrosequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes to examine the oral microbiome of saliva, mu

Efficacy of an infection control programme in reducing nosocomial bloodstream infections in a Senegalese neonatal unit.

Neonatal nosocomial infections are public health threats in the developing world, and successful interventions are rarely reported. A before-and-after study was conducted in the neonatal unit of the Hôpital Principal de Dakar, Senegal to assess the efficacy of a multi-faceted hospital infection control programme implemented from March to May 2005. The interventions included clustering of nursing care, a simple algorithm for empirical therapy of suspected early-onset sepsis, minimal invasive care and promotion of early discharge of neonates. Data on nosocomial bloodstream infections, mortality,…

Impact of an infection control program on the prevalence of nosocomial infections at a tertiary care center in Switzerland .

OBJECTIVE: To study the impact of a multimodal infection control program on the rate of nosocomial infections at a 550-bed tertiary care center. METHODS: Before and after the implementation of an infection control program, the rate of nosocomial infection was recorded in time-interval prevalence studies. Hand hygiene compliance was studied before and after the intervention. As a surrogate marker of compliance, the amount of alcohol-based hand rub consumed before the intervention was compared with the amount consumed after the intervention. The intervention included additional staff for infect…

[Epidemiology of nosocomial infections after cataract surgery and role of the Infection Control Committee in prevention].

Despite of a low incidence (3 for 1,000), post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis remains a serious complication with a poor prognosis. The no … almitis have an exogenous origin. In order to prevent these nosocomial infections, the role of the "infection control committee" and the operational hygiene team is very important: 1) survey of new infectious cases and of the hospital environment; 2) infection control measures about pre and intra operative preparation of the patient; 3) operating room maintenance.

Control mechanisms of virus replication in naturally SIVsmm infected mangabeys and experimentally infected macaques.

As a close cousin to Asian macaques, the African sooty mangabey monkey, a species naturally infected with SIV without ever developing disease, represents an intriguing and thought provoking model for the study of lentiviral infection and disease development. Pursuant to our previous findings that documented the presence of high frequencies of CD8+ T-cells capable of inhibiting lentiviral replication in vitro via a soluble factor, the potential contribution of beta-chemokines and their receptor was evaluated in samples from sooty mangabeys and disease susceptible macaques. Both mangabey and Rhe

How do interdisciplinary practitioners conceptualize infection control in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic?

AIM: During the recent global pandemic, nursing home (NH) residents were among the most vulnerable, yet empirical insights into how practitioners conceptualized and implemented infection control in NHs were limited. This study aimed to explore the ways in which interdisciplinary NH practitioners understood and conceptualized infection control in response to emerging infectious diseases and to identify a structural framework derived from their perceptions. DESIGN: A qualitative phenomenographic research design was employed. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 interdisciplinary…
