Improving heart failure symptom recognition: a diary analysis.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is a costly and highly disabling syndrome affecting nearly 5 million individuals yearly. Lifestyle changes are crucial to the successful management of HF, and daily weight monitoring is an essential component of self-care. Daily weights provide an objective indicator of fluid volume status in patients with HF. However, the practice of performing daily weights is underappreciated and infrequently implemented by patients. This may contribute to an inability to recognize worsening HF and, ultimately, delay in seeking medical care. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study w

Executive function after childhood cancer: Insights from network neuroscience.

In this review, we examine the empirical literature on the cognitive late effects of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and brain tumors, with a focus on executive function and its neural underpinnings. Executive function is a critical domain, influencing survivors' educational attainment, social relationships, and overall quality of life. We first examine behavioral evidence of executive function impairments observed after cancer diagnosis and treatment. We then explore neuroscientific insights, integrating findings from volumetric analyses, functional imaging, and network-based app

Prediction of generalized anxiety disorder treatment outcomes with neurobehavioral responses to approach-avoidance conflict: a randomized clinical trial.

Treatments for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) often aim to address maladaptive approach-avoidance behavior patterns. Approach-avoidance conflict (AAC) offers a potential framework for identifying treatment outcome predictors and informing optimization of GAD treatment. The current study examined whether pre-treatment neurobehavioral AAC indices predict symptom improvement in behavioral activation (BA) and exposure therapy (EXP) for GAD. Treatment-seeking adults meeting criteria for GAD completed a randomized clinical trial with pre-treatment blinding, conducted from 2016-2021. Participants

Top Ten Tips Palliative Care Clinicians Should Know About Trauma-Informed Care.

Trauma is a personal stress response to experiences perceived as harmful or life-threatening, and has ongoing impacts on illness and health. Exposure to trauma is increasingly prevalent, and the risk of medical trauma or re-traumatization is heightened for people living with serious illness. Trauma not only impacts health outcomes, but can also interfere with decision-making and worsen symptom burden at the end of life. Thus, it is critical that palliative care clinicians in all professions be skilled at providing high-quality trauma-informed care (TIC). TIC seeks to provide more holistic and

Health issues and needs among adolescents in Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

Adolescence, which is a critical foundation for lifelong health, comes with distinct health challenges and needs. Understanding these is crucial for timely and effective measures. This study therefore examines adolescent health issues and needs and identifies unmet health information and service needs, including differences by sex, grade level, and school type, to inform tailored and effective interventions. The study employed a cross-sectional design involving school adolescents. Respondents were randomly selected after stratification by sex at grade level. Data were collected using a self-ad

Helpful coping strategies and help-seeking behaviors for mental health problems: a vignette study in young people and professionals.

BACKGROUND: Understanding young people’s and professionals’ attitudes towards ways to deal with mental health problems is important to overcome barriers to care. We investigated the short- and long-term perceived helpfulness of a list of coping strategies and help-seeking behaviors in a vignette study. Differences between stakeholder groups were also assessed. METHODS: Belgian youth (N = 919), aged 16–24 years, and professionals (N = 569) in youth work, social welfare services, and mental health services took part in the study. Young people were either recruited from a random community sample

Sex Differences in the Presentation and Perception of Symptoms Among Young Patients With Myocardial Infarction: Evidence from the VIRGO Study (Variation in Recovery: Role of Gender on Outcomes of Young AMI Patients).

BACKGROUND: Some studies report that women are less likely to present with chest pain for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Information on symptom presentation, perception of symptoms, and care-seeking behaviors is limited for young patients with AMI. METHODS: We interviewed 2009 women and 976 men aged 18 to 55 years hospitalized for AMI at 103 US hospitals participating in the VIRGO study (Variation in Recovery: Role of Gender on Outcomes of Young AMI Patients). Structured patient interviews during the index AMI hospitalization were used to collect information on symptom presentation, perce

Predatory marketing and false health promotion on social media: risk pathways in diet, fitness, and supplement communication.

As the commercial circulation of health content on social media continues to intensify, large volumes of fitness, nutrition, and wellness information lacking scientific grounding are repeatedly pushed to users, heightening the likelihood that psychologically susceptible individuals internalize distorted beliefs and engage in harmful practices. This study examines the mechanism through which exposure to such content influences psychological vulnerability, strengthens false health beliefs, shapes risky behavioral choices, and ultimately affects perceived health status. Using 482 valid survey res

GABAergic modulation of human social interaction in a prisoner's dilemma model by acute administration of alprazolam.

Recent work in neuroeconomics has used game theory paradigms to examine neural systems that subserve human social interaction and decision making. Attempts to modify social interaction through pharmacological manipulation have been less common. Here we show dose-dependent modification of human social behavior in a prisoner's dilemma model after acute administration of the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-A modulating benzodiazepine alprazolam. Nine healthy adults received doses of placebo, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg alprazolam in a counterbalanced within-subject design, while completing multiple test bloc

Genomic structural equation study reveals links between anorexia nervosa and delay discounting and lack of perseverance but not other facets of impulsivity.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a heritable condition, characterized by a fear of weight gain and a distorted body image, for which treatments are only limited. AN is characterized by excessive control over feeding behaviors, which has been hypothesized to indicate that low impulsivity, including low emotional impulsivity (urgency), may place certain individuals at risk for AN; however, this has not been fully genetically evaluated. We used genomic structural equation modeling and genome-wide association studies (GWASs) based on individuals of European ancestry (n = 72,517-903,147) to examine the lat

A test of the empirical profile and coherence of the DSM-5 psychopathy specifier.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5th edition (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) introduced a psychopathy specifier (DSM-5 PS) as part of the Section III diagnostic model of antisocial personality disorder. Designed to capture the construct of fearless dominance/boldness, the DSM-5 PS is assessed on the basis of the presence of low scores on traits of withdrawal and anxiousness, and high scores on attention seeking. These constructs have garnered attention in the past decade but are the subject of substantial debate as to their role in the conceptualization

Help-Seeking Patterns during Weather Events: 2-1-1 Service Calls among Service-Connected Unhoused Populations in Louisiana from 2014 to 2023.

The 2-1-1 information and referral system connects vulnerable populations to essential services during public health emergencies. However, there is limited evidence examining the specific needs of unhoused populations during these events. This study examines associations between temperature variations, tropical cyclones, and service utilization patterns among unhoused populations using 2-1-1 call data from southern Louisiana (2014-2023). Analyzing over 20,000 calls, predominantly in urban areas (65%), we employed negative binomial regression, distributed lag non-linear modeling (DLNM), and nat

Painful Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction Are More Associated With Worse Health-Related Quality of Life and Psychological Disorders Than Non-Painful Disorders in Latin American Countries.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) are associated with reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and psychological disorders. Among individuals with DGBI, abdominal pain correlates with increased healthcare-seeking and analgesic use. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of pain as a cardinal symptom on HRQoL and psychological disorders. METHODS: This is a sub-analysis of data from four Latin American countries included in the Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study (RFGES). DGBI were classified into (1) painful DGBI, including individuals with diagnoses charact

Prevalence and Burden of Illness of Rome IV Irritable Bowel Syndrome in the United States: Results From a Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The estimated prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) using Rome IV criteria in the United States (US) ranges from 4.7% to 5.3%, although these estimates arise from studies with relatively small sample sizes. This study assessed the prevalence of IBS and its associated burden of illness using a nationally representative data set with nearly 89,000 people in the US. METHODS: From May 3 to June 24, 2020, we performed an online survey described to participating adults aged ≥18 years old as a "national health survey." We recruited a representative sample of people in the U

Unmet supportive care needs of haematological cancer survivors: rural versus urban residents.

Due to fewer cancer services in rural locations, rural survivors may have unique unmet needs compared to urban survivors. This study compared among rural and urban haematological cancer survivors the most common "high/very high" unmet supportive care needs and the unmet need scores for five domains (information, financial concerns, access and continuity of care, relationships and emotional health). Survivors' socio-demographics, rurality, cancer history and psychological factors associated with each unmet need domain were also explored. A total of 1511 haematological cancer survivors were recr

Qualitative evaluation of selected social factors that impact sexual risk-taking behaviour among African students in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of HIV and AIDS continues to be a source of great concern within universities in South Africa. Furthermore, university students constitute an important community in the intervention against the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Students in the age group of 15-24 years are at a greater risk of HIV infection than any other group in the country; yet, little is known about why they continue to engage in risky sexual practices. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to explore the sexual behaviour of students in a metropolitan Durban University of Technology in KwaZulu-Natal to understand
