Стойкость к ДДТ в Западной Африке и Азии (Aedes aegypti (L.).

Chlorantraniliprole: bioactivation in coffee seedlings and control of resistant Leucoptera coffeella populations.

BACKGROUND: The diamide chlorantraniliprole stands out for its high performance in controlling agricultural pests, with high selectivity and reduced environmental impact. In coffee cultivation, this insecticide has been widely employed for the management of the coffee leaf miner (Leucoptera coffeella Guérin-Méneville, 1842). However, intensive use has favored the selection of resistant populations, compromising control efficacy and intensifying biotic stress in plants. This study aimed to evaluate the morphophysiological effects of chlorantraniliprole on coffee seedlings (Coffea arabica L., cv

Portable experimental hut tents (PEHTs): a conceptual framework for improved malaria vector control decision-making with a review of fixed experimental hut sites in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) remain the primary vector control method across sub-Saharan Africa to prevent malaria transmission, with 2.2 billion pyrethroid (PY) ITNs distributed since 2004. Widespread PY resistance has contributed to stalling progress in recent years; however, new ITNs containing the pyrrole, chlorfenapyr, or the synergist piperonyl butoxide can provide improved efficacy. With more vector control options but limited resources, malaria programs face complex decisions influenced by local transmission intensity, mosquito species, and dynamic insecticide resistance…

Durability study of Veeralin®, Olyset® Plus and MAGNet® insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: India plans to eliminate malaria by 2030, targeting zero local cases by 2027. However, malaria remains prevalent in endemic regions. As a means of addressing this issue, insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are crucial for prevention. In areas with pyrethroid-resistant vectors, studies indicate that ITNs containing pyrethroids and piperonyl butoxide (PBO) are more effective. However, their physical and chemical durability and bioefficacy in this setting require further evaluation. This study assessed the durability of two pyrethroid-PBO-treated nets and one pyrethroid-only-treated net t

Evaluation of Alternatives to an Organophosphate Insecticide with Selected Cultural Practices: Effects on Thrips, Frankliniella fusca, and Incidence of Spotted Wilt in Peanut Farmscapes.

Peanut growers use a combination of tactics to manage spotted wilt disease caused by thrips-transmitted Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). They include planting TSWV-resistant cultivars, application of insecticides, and various cultural practices. Two commonly used insecticides against thrips are aldicarb and phorate. Both insecticides exhibit broad-spectrum toxicity. Recent research has led to the identification of potential alternatives to aldicarb and phorate. In this study, along with reduced-risk, alternative insecticides, we evaluated the effect of conventional versus strip tillage; singl

Toxicity of copper (II) metal complexes with amino acids ligands: A study of activity in Aedes aegypti larvae.

The larval control of Aedes aegypti has been done mainly by insecticides, which cause resistance and environmental contamination and have a high-cost development and application. The need for alternative solutions to problems caused by synthetic insecticides has led to studies to find new, active, and less toxic compounds, such as metallo-insecticides. In the present study, the toxic activity of Cu(II) - complexes with the amino acids tryptophan, histidine, methionine, and taurine in Ae. aegypti larvae were evaluated. The Cu(II) - histidine complex showed no toxicity. For the Cu(II) - tryptoph

The tsetse (Diptera: Glossinidae) story: implications for mosquitoes.

In Zimbabwe, tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) are controlled using insecticide-impregnated baits. About 60,000 targets, baited with a blend of acetone, 1-octen-3-ol, 4-methylphenol, and 3-n-propylphenol, are deployed in tsetse-infested areas. The development of this control technology has been based on an understanding of the responses of tsetse to their hosts, using research tools that quantify single specific responses. this understanding required the development of new research tools, such as electrocuting devices and video techniques to analyze behavioral responses and gas chromatography linke

Knockout of a P-glycoprotein gene increases susceptibility to abamectin and emamectin benzoate in Spodoptera exigua.

P-glycoprotein [P-gp or the ATP-binding cassette transporter B1 (ABCB1)] is an important participant in multidrug resistance of cancer cells, yet the precise function of this arthropod transporter is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the importance of P-gp for susceptibility to insecticides in the beet armyworm (Spodoptera exigua) using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR-associated 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) gene-editing technology. We cloned an open reading frame (ORF) encoding the S. exigua P-gp protein (SeP-gp) predicted to display structural characteristics

Baseline susceptibility to alpha-cypermethrin in Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) from Lapinha Cave (Brazil).

BACKGROUND: Given the increase in cases of visceral leishmaniasis in recent years, associated with the socio-economic impact of this disease, as well as the wide distribution of Lutzomyia longipalpis in Brazil and the likelihood that this vector may develop resistance to insecticides used for control, the Ministry of Health considers as crucial the creation of a network in order to study and monitor the resistance of this vector to insecticides used for control. In this sense, this study aimed: 1) to characterize the susceptibility of L. longipalpis from Lapinha Cave (Lagoa Santa, MG - Brazil)

Agricultural practices drive multifactorial pyrethroid resistance in Anopheles coluzzii populations from southern Benin.

BACKGROUND: The rapid spread of insecticide resistance threatens the effectiveness of malaria vector control across sub-Saharan Africa. In southern Benin, the respective contributions of agricultural pesticide use and urban vector control interventions to the selection of resistant Anopheles populations remain poorly documented. METHODS: Pyrethroid resistance was investigated in Anopheles coluzzii populations collected in southern Benin from two zones: two agricultural areas (Sèmè-Kpodji and Abomey-Calavi) and one non-agricultural urban area (Yenawa). WHO tube bioassays were performed using d…

Delivery.

Enthusiasm greeted the development of synthetic organic insecticides in the mid-twentieth century, only to see this give way to dismay and eventually scepticism and outright opposition by some. Regardless of how anyone feels about this issue, insecticides and other pesticides have become indispensable, which creates something of a dilemma. Possibly as a result of the shift in public attitude towards insecticides, genetic engineering of microbes was first met with scepticism and caution among scientists. Later, the development of genetically modified crop plants was met with an attitude that ha

A Honeybee-Safer Pyrazolyl Pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidine Mesoionic Targeting Fall Armyworm nAChR α1/β2 Subunits.

Spodoptera frugiperda is a highly destructive pest with widespread resistance to conventional insecticides. Mesoionic chemicals are promising for insecticide discovery, yet lepidopteran-active examples remain limited and many raise pollinator-safety concerns. Here, we report a series of pyrazole-decorated mesoionic pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidine derivatives and identify Q4 as a lepidopteran-active insecticide candidate with potent activity against S. frugiperda, although its potency is slightly lower than that of the commercial standard dicloromezotiaz. Q4 exhibits relatively lower acute contact toxi

Aquatic predators as complementary tools for mosquito vector control: current evidence, ecological considerations, and future directions.

Insecticide-based strategies for mosquito control are increasingly constrained by insecticide resistance, sparking interest in eco-friendly alternatives, one of which is the use of aquatic predators to reduce mosquito densities. Evidence from laboratory, semi-field, and localized field studies indicates that aquatic predators can significantly reduce mosquito larval and adult densities. However, direct evidence linking these ecological effects to sustained reductions in mosquito-borne disease transmission remains limited. This review synthesizes current studies on the use of aquatic predators …

Cascades of effectiveness of next-generation insecticide-treated nets against malaria, from entomological trials to real-life conditions.

As insecticide resistance spreads in Africa, next-generation insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are increasingly being deployed to protect vulnerable populations against malaria. While these nets provide greater entomological efficacy against resistant mosquitoes, their effectiveness against malaria transmission also depends on other factors, such as durability, access, usage, and activity patterns of hosts and vectors. Here, we quantify the impact of two next-generation ITNs, namely Interceptor®G2 (chlorfenapyr-pyrethroid) and Olyset® Plus (piperonyl butoxide-pyrethroid), in a cascade from entom…

An epidemiological overview of malaria in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is one of the four major malaria-endemic countries in South-East Asia having approximately 34% of its population at risk of malaria. This paper aims at providing an overview of the malaria situation in this country. Relevant information was retrieved from published articles and reports in PubMed and Google Scholar. Malaria in Bangladesh is concentrated in 13 districts with a prevalence ranging between 3.1% and 36%, and is mostly caused by Plasmodium falciparum. Geographical conditions pose a potential risk for Plasmodium knowlesi malaria. Resistance to a number of drugs previously r

Binding characteristics of chemosensory protein 11 from Grapholita molesta Busck (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) to insecticides.

Chemosensory proteins (CSPs) are small soluble proteins that recognize and bind to various small chemical molecules. Although numerous studies have shown that CSPs play an important role in olfactory communication among insects, recent research indicated that CSPs also contribute to insecticide resistance. The antennae-enriched GmolCSP11 from Grapholita molesta Busck exhibits high binding affinities for seven insecticide ligands, as verified by fluorescence competitive binding assays of recombinant protein. GmolCSP11 exhibited the strongest binding affinity for chlorpyrifos (Ki = 1.01 ± 0.00 μ…
