The Association Between Causality Orientation and Internet Gaming Disorder, and the Role of Sensation Seeking, Anxiety, and Depression.

OBJECTIVE: Self-determination theory (SDT) deems that people have three causality orientations: autonomy orientation, control orientation, and impersonal orientation. Previous studies suggested that lower autonomy orientation or higher control and impersonal orientations may be associated with more addictive behaviors. Our study aimed to investigate if these associations exist in Internet gaming disorder (IGD), and if sensation seeking, anxiety, and depression could influence the associations between causality orientations and IGD symptoms. METHODS: A total of 1,400 college students completed

[Pathological gambling : conceptual evolution, clinical characteristics and psychotherapeutical perspectives].

Gambling is a common activity among almost all societies. Forms of gambling have been present all along history, but new gambling behaviours seem to emerge since the development of internet, in a way that we can consider that society has never offered so many opportunities of developing addictive behaviours. Social representations of sin, deviance and crime associated with gambling in the past have disappeared. Gambling now falls within the scope of widespread amusement and socially acceptable activities, whose benefits are not negligible. However, gambling and its impact on individuals who gi

The Efficacy of Three Modalities of Internet-Based Psychotherapy for Non-Treatment-Seeking Online Problem Gamblers: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Internet-based interventions targeted at the most at-risk gamblers could reduce the treatment gap for addictive disorders. Currently, no clinical trial has included non-treatment-seeking patients who have been recruited directly in their gambling environment. This study was the first exclusively Internet-based randomized controlled trial among non-help-seeking problem gamblers with naturalistic recruitment in their gambling environment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of three modalities of Internet-based psychotherapies with or without guidance, compar

Curvilinear associations between sexual orientation and problematic substance use, behavioural addictions and mental health among young Swiss men.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It is well documented that individuals with a minority sexual orientation face greater risks of problematic substance use (e.g. heavy episodic drinking, alcohol use disorder) and mental health problems. Far less is known about how that risk varies within this population and their risk of behavioural addictions. This study estimated the risks of problematic substance use, behavioural addiction and poor mental health across the spectrum of sexual orientation. SAMPLE AND METHOD: A sample of young Swiss men (N = 5294; mean age = 25.5, SD = 1.25; representative of 21 of Switze

The role of self-control in the bidirectional relation between problematic smartphone use and generalized anxiety symptoms among depressed secondary school students: Insight from longitudinal moderation network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of problematic smartphone use (PSU) and generalized anxiety symptoms among individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD), their symptom-level interplay remains unclear. The Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution model emphasizes that self-control may moderate the relation between generalized anxiety symptoms and PSU. However, the dynamic role of self-control in this relation at the symptom level over time is poorly understood. METHOD: A total of 2469 secondary school students completed questionnaires in two waves, including the Mobile Phone

Optimal Cut-Offs for Digital Addiction Scales as Preliminary Screening Proxies for Psychological Distress Symptoms Among Vietnamese Medical Students: A Single-Centre ROC Curve Analysis.

Digital technologies are central to student life, but evidence is limited on whether digital-use scales can provide useful thresholds for identifying psychological distress among medical students. This single-center cross-sectional study analyzed complete data from 600 undergraduates at a medical university in southern Vietnam. Stress, depression, and anxiety symptoms were classified using the DASS-21, while problematic smartphone use, social media use, and gaming-related problems were assessed using the SABAS, BSMAS, and a six-item GAS adaptation, respectively. Receiver operating characterist

Prepared and reactive inhibition in smokers and non-smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Models of addiction have identified deficits in inhibitory control, or the ability to inhibit inappropriate or unwanted behaviors, as one factor in the development and maintenance of addictive behaviors. Current literature supports disruption of the prefrontal circuits that mediate reactive inhibitory control processes (i.e., inhibition in response to sudden, unplanned changes in environmental demands) in substance use disorders. However, the relationship between disorders of addiction, such as nicotine dependence, and planned inhibitory processes (i.e., inhibition that occurs af

Why Do Parenting Styles Matter? The Relation Between Parenting Styles, Cyberbullying, and Problematic Internet Use Among Children With and Without SLD/ADHD.

This study focuses on the pervasive issues of cyberbullying and problematic internet use (PIU) among youth, particularly in children with disabilities. To elucidate the role of parents in mitigating these challenges, the study examines the prevalence of three parenting styles (permissive/authoritarian/authoritative), and their correlation with cyberbullying and PIU among children with or without specific learning disorder (SLD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHD). The study consisted of 300 Israeli participants: 150 children-9 to 12 years old, matched with their 150 parents, di

Neural correlates of appetitive learning and extinction in individuals with risky gaming use and gaming disorder.

It is hypothesized that internet gaming disorder (IGD) shares psychological and neurobiological mechanisms with substance use disorders and behavioral addictions. However, the mechanisms of appetitive conditioning, extinction, and extinction recall in gaming disorder remain underexplored. A total of 83 male participants were enrolled in the study. The sample included 25 individuals with IGD, 23 gaming-risky (GR), and 35 non-problematic individuals. They underwent a classical conditioning, extinction, and extinction recall paradigm, with gaming-related, pornographic, and monetary stimuli used a

How balanced time perspective affects short-video addiction: a chain mediation model based on trait anxiety and ego depletion.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified balanced time perspective as a protective factor against short-video addiction among adolescents. However, the underlying psychological mechanisms linking these two constructs remain insufficiently explored. Guided by the cognition-emotion-behavior theory, this study aimed to investigate the mediating mechanisms through which balanced time perspective influences short-video addiction. METHODS: Two studies were conducted: a cross-sectional study (Study 1, N = 689; 54.3% male, mean age = 14.40 years, SD = 2.11) and a two-wave longitudinal study (Stud

Longitudinal bidirectional relations between problematic smartphone use and academic burnout among adolescents: The mediating role of executive dysfunction.

Problematic smartphone use (PSU) has been recognized as a significant risk factor for academic burnout. Nevertheless, the longitudinal dynamic processes and underlying psychological mechanisms linking these two constructs remain insufficiently underexplored. Drawing on the Resource Depletion Theory and the Compensatory Internet Use Theory, the present three-wave longitudinal study investigated the mediating role of executive dysfunction in the reciprocal relationship between PSU and academic burnout among Chinese adolescents. A total of 860 adolescents (48.0% male; baseline Mage = 12.36, SD =

Influence of digital behavior and sleep quality on periodontal status in adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA) and poor sleep quality are increasingly recognized as behavioral risk factors that may influence adolescents' overall and oral health. Adolescence represents a critical period for establishing lifelong oral hygiene behaviors, and gingival inflammation is highly prevalent in this age group. This study aimed to evaluate the association between IA, sleep quality, and clinical periodontal parameters among adolescents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 100 systemically healthy adolescents (aged 12-18 years). The sample consisted of both male (47%) and

Features related to the presence of internet gaming disorder and their impact on the treatment outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is a highly engrossing activity with the individual spending up to 10 h per day gaming, this causes issues in accomplishing their tasks and personal goals. Also, to generate in them increased anxiety, impulsivity and lack of social skills, this impacts the good personal development and individual's quality of life. Therefore, it is vital to better understand, in terms of treatment, which factors are associated with therapeutic outcomes (largely to achieve control over the use of video games and the lack of relapses) following a standardized C
