Biological and psychological correlates of intermittent dieting behavior in young women. A model for bulimia nervosa.

The eating disorder bulimia nervosa is characterized by alternating periods of strict dieting and overeating. Patients also report mood fluctuations, frequent eating related thoughts, fear of loss of control over eating, impairment of cognitive abilities such as concentration, and somatic complaints. The present study attempted to clarify to what extent these symptoms are consequences of the dieting behavior. Nine healthy young women, classified as unrestrained eaters, were set on a intermittent dieting schedule over 4 weeks. Four days each week (Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri) they had to reduce their in

Psychological functioning among members of a small polar expedition.

BACKGROUND: While depressed mood, insomnia, irritability and impaired cognition represent common responses to the physical and psychosocial stressors associated with polar environments, wide variations exist in their expression and the degree to which they adversely affect the health and performance of polar expeditioners. In particular, the process of successful adaptation to polar environments and the psychosocial characteristics associated with this process remains poorly understood. HYPOTHESIS: Psychosocial characteristics associated with successful coping with typical stressors are also

The influence of cyclothymic and hyperthymic affective temperaments on glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Affective temperaments are inherited parts of personality determining mood and activity, affecting the management of somatic conditions. We aimed to investigate the association between affective temperaments, depressive symptoms, and self-care (physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption), and their effect on glycemic control, among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in general practice, in a cross-sectional study enrolling 338 consecutive patients from six primary care practices in Hungary. A self-administered questionnaire (history, anthropometric, socioeconomic, laboratory parameters)

Multivariate, Multi-omic Analysis in 799,429 Individuals Identifies 134 Loci Associated with Somatoform Traits.

Somatoform traits, which manifest as persistent physical symptoms without a clear medical cause, are prevalent and pose challenges to clinical practice. Understanding the genetic basis of these disorders could improve diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. With publicly available summary statistics, we conducted a multivariate genome-wide association study (GWAS) and multi-omic analysis of four somatoform traits-fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, pain intensity, and health satisfaction-in 799,429 individuals genetically similar to Europeans. Using genomic structural equation modeling, GWAS ide

Gut Bacteria and Neuropsychiatric Disorders.

Bacteria in the gut microbiome plays an intrinsic part in immune activation, intestinal permeability, enteric reflex, and entero-endocrine signaling. Apart from physiological and structural changes brought about by gut bacteria on entero-epithelial cells and mucus layers, a vast number of signals generated in the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) reaches the brain via the vagus nerve. Research on the gut-brain axis (GBA) has mostly been devoted to digestive functions and satiety. Less papers have been published on the role gut microbiota play in mood, cognitive behavior and neuropsychiatric disord

The Influence of Early Life Experience on Visceral Pain.

Pain is the most reported and troublesome symptom of nearly all functional disorders affecting the genitourinary and gastrointestinal organs. Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS), vulvodynia, and/or chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS; collectively termed chronic pelvic pain syndromes) report pain severe enough to impact quality of life and often suffer from symptoms of or are diagnosed with more than one of these syndromes. This increased comorbidity between chronic pelvic pain syndromes, and with pain diso

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis with psychiatric disorders: report of three siblings and literature review.

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX), a rare familial lipid metabolic disease inherited via an autosomal recessive trait, is caused by mutations of the sterol 27-hydroxylase gene. Psychiatric disorders may occur in patients with CTX. In Taiwan, Chang et al presented patients with CTX. However, there has not been a case presented about CTX with psychiatric disorders in Taiwan. We present three siblings in one family with CTX combined with moderate mental retardation. One of the siblings had long-term depressed mood, irritability, poor appetite, insomnia, fatigability, and pessimistic thinking a

The Kleine-Levin syndrome as a neuropsychiatric disorder: a case report.

The Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS) is characterized by periodic, sudden-onset episodes of hypersomnia, compulsive hyperphagia, and behavioral-emotional disorders (typically indiscriminate hypersexuality, irritability, impulsive behaviors), lasting from a few days to a few weeks, with almost complete remission in the intercritical periods. Depression, confusion, and thought disorders are frequently associated with the critical symptomatology, and they may suggest other psychiatric diagnoses (schizophrenia, mood disorder, conversion disorder) or a substance abuse. Life after a stroke: coping with change.

Individuals who have had a stroke must cope with many changes in their lives. Initially, the focus is on the physical changes and functional abilities; however, coping with the emotional and cognitive changes also requires attention. Changes in mental status can affect a person's rehabilitation outcomes. This study describes the predominant themes related by stroke survivors that affected their recovery. Eleven right-hemisphere stroke patients (6 women and 5 men) were interviewed four times (at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months) after their stroke. The descriptions of personal changes, f

Assessing the benefits and risks of amantadine for irritability and aggression after traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the benefits versus harms of amantadine in the treatment of irritability and aggression following traumatic brain injury. METHODS: Secondary outcome data from a randomized controlled multisite trial of amantadine 100 mg twice daily were used to calculate number-needed-to-treat (NNT). Given prior findings of positive clinician-perceived effects and low incidence of adverse events, we hypothesized low number-needed-to-treat for benefit (NNTB; high benefit) and high number-needed-to-treat for harm (NNTH; low risk) based on the clinician ratings, supporting the use of amant
