An epidemiological survey on vestibular neuronitis in Japan was conducted by means of a questionnaire filled in by major neuro-otology clinics (otolaryngologists) during 1988-1990 (3 years). The diagnostic criteria of vestibular neuronitis settled on in 1986 by the Standardization Committee of the Japan Society of Equilibrium Research were applied. Many cases of latex-induced intraoperatived anaphylaxis have been reported in Europe and the U.S. but not in Japan. We measured latex-specific IgE antibody in sera from the 108 atopic children with high serum IgE levels (over 1,000 U/ml). All of them were diagnosed to have asthma, atopic dermatitis and/or food intolerance. Eleven (10.2%) out of 108 patients were found to have latex-specific IgE by RAST, and 6 of them were positive for latex antigen by skin test. To investigate the prevalence of tardive dyskinesia (TD) in a group of psychiatric patients receiving low doses of antipsychotic drugs, we examined 647 Japanese inpatients (361 men and 286 women) with a mean age of 49.8 years, receiving a mean dose of antipsychotic drugs of 276.8 mg of chlorpromazine equivalent. TD was diagnosed according to the criteria of Schooler and Kane with the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale. The overall prevalence of TD was 22.3%. Causes and risk factors of deaths from subacute myelo-optico neuropathy (SMON) were studied in a prospective cohort of 4,329 SMON patients followed for 3 years and 7 months (Sept. 1985-March 1989) with the following findings: (1) Recent excess deaths of SMON patients was estimated as 4% from ratio of O/E (SMR = 104) and deaths due to SMON itself was 6.4%. A population-based, collaborative glaucoma survey was conducted in seven regions throughout Japan, during the years of 1988 and 1989. During the 20-year period from 1968 to 1987, 1024 patients with congenital anomalies of the hand from 1000 Japanese families were examined in our clinic. Of these patients, 204 had relatives with limb anomalies. While postaxial polydactyly showed a 33% level of familial recurrence, symphalangism and Kirner's syndrome showed about 23% recurrence, syndactyly 18%, radioulnar synostosis 9%, radial ray deficiency 8%, cleft hand 7%, and duplicated thumb 5%. None of the relatives had ulnar deficiency or symbrachydactyly.

The first multi-institutional survey of the Aicardi syndrome in Japan was performed during 1985 and 1986. A national survey of the morphologic features of hepatolithiasis in Japan disclosed that 13 (4.8%) of the 273 cases examined were associated with obvious biliary malformations: Caroli's disease with congenital hepatic fibrosis (one case), adult polycystic disease of the liver and kidneys (one case), choledochal cyst (nine cases), and anomalous pancreaticobiliary ductal union (four cases). An analysis was performed of 2,168 consecutive stroke patients who were examined by computed tomography and entered into a hospital-based stroke registry in Akita Prefecture, Japan. The occurrence of cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, and subarachnoid hemorrhage was 30, 55, and 14%, respectively. Data on 93 autopsy cases (group A) of thorotrast-associated liver cancers were obtained from the "Annual of Pathological Autopsy Cases in Japan" from 1958 to 1979, and data on 78 autopsy cases (group B) of thorotrast-associated liver cancers were obtained from the Japanese literature from 1953 to 1980. In connection with the recently commenced decline of death rate for gastric cancer in Japan, the time trend of intestinal metaplasia of the stomach among the Japanese is investigated. Otherwise normal stomachs from autopsies, and stomachs removed for gastric or duodenal ulcer or for early gastric carcinoma, each collected from two different periods at intervals of 10 to 20 years, are compared histologically.
