From Joints to Arteries: How Rheumatoid Arthritis Therapies Influence Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk.

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis face a markedly increased likelihood of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, driven by conventional cardiovascular risk factors as well as persistent systemic inflammation. Proinflammatory cytokines and immune dysregulation accelerate endothelial dysfunction and promote plaque formation, positioning rheumatoid arthritis as a model of inflammation-driven vascular disease. Although current therapeutics to manage rheumatoid arthritis are designed to control joint inflammation and improve overall morbidity and mortality, their effects on vascular he

Union Outcomes in Medial and Central Column Tarsometatarsal Fusions: Single vs Multiple Joints.

BACKGROUND: Tarsometatarsal (TMT) joint arthrodesis is essential for managing surgical management of severe bunion deformities, complex midfoot trauma, and osteoarthritis. Various fixation methods and bone grafting types have been described, but the impact of the number of joints fused on union rates remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate whether fusing multiple joints affects arthrodesis rates and to compare union outcomes among different fixation constructs and grafting techniques. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of 582 TMT fusions, comparing single- …

The immature sacroiliac joints on cross-sectional imaging: developmental anatomy and diagnostic pitfalls.

The immature sacroiliac joint (SIJ) has developmental imaging appearances that frequently simulate sacroiliitis in children and adolescents evaluated for juvenile spondyloarthritis, and false-positive interpretation increases when adult MRI and structural criteria are applied. This review integrates developmental anatomy with MRI and CT findings and discusses CT-like MRI and MRI-based synthetic CT as structural adjuncts for cortical assessment in the immature SIJ. We emphasize the most relevant false-positive pathways in daily practice, including peri-physeal fluid-sensitive marrow hyperintens

The impact of posterior tooth loss on the biomechanics of the temporomandibular joints.

The impact of posterior tooth loss on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is controversial. Existing studies mainly rely on clinical observation, lacking biomechanical research. This study recruited 10 healthy volunteers (Control group) and 20 patients with posterior tooth loss (PTL group). Three-dimensional maxillofacial models were reconstructed. Finite element analysis showed stress concentration in the PTL group, with stress magnitudes much higher than the Control group, especially on the tooth-missing side. Posterior tooth loss causes asymmetric TMJ stress and higher stress levels, related

Oppositions, joints, and targets: the attractors that are the glue of social interactions.

Social interactions are often analyzed by scoring segments of predefined behavior and then statistically assessing numerical and sequential patterns to identify the structure of the encounters. However, this approach can miss the dynamics of the animals' relationship over the course of the encounter, one that often involves invariant bonds, say a nose-to-nose orientation, with many different movements performed by both partners acting to counteract each other's attempts to break or maintain the relationship. Moreover, these invariant bonds can switch from one configuration to another during an

Biomechanical analysis of load distribution in porcine hip joints at different acetabular coverages.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip causes secondary osteoarthritis. Finite element analysis suggests high hip joint contact pressure in patients with hip dysplasia and a reduction in contact pressure after periacetabular osteotomy. However, few biomechanical studies have examined the load distribution in the hip joint. This study aimed to investigate the biomechanical properties of load distribution in porcine hip joints at different acetabular coverages. METHODS: Six porcine hip joints were analyzed using three models: 1) neutral coverage, 2) 15° under-coverage (defined as dyspla…

How Multifunctioning Joints Produce Highly Agile Limbs in Animals with Lessons for Robotics.

This paper reviews how multifunctioning joints produce highly agile limbs in animals with lessons for robotics. One of the key reasons why animals are so fast and agile is that they have multifunctioning joints in their limbs. The multifunctioning joints lead to a high degree of compactness which then leads to a host of benefits such as low mass, low moment of inertia and low drag. This paper presents three case studies of multifunctioning joints-the human wrist joint, knee joint and foot joints-in order to identify how multifunctioning is achieved and what lessons can be learned for robotics.…

Fatigue Analysis of Composite Bolted Joints under Random and Constant Amplitude Fatigue Loadings.

This paper attempts to analyze the random fatigue life and failure modes of joints using two calculation methods. Three kinds of tests were carried out, which were the static test, constant amplitude fatigue test and the random fatigue test, and four kinds of joints were designed. After the static test, the joint was subjected to a constant amplitude fatigue test by selecting different percentages of load according to the static strength. In order to predict the random fatigue life more precisely, two calculation methods were carried out, which were the linear cumulative damage method and the …

Strength Optimisation of Hybrid Bolted/Bonded Composite Joints Based on Finite Element Analysis.

A finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted to examine the behaviour of single-lap quasi-isotropic (QI) and cross-ply (CP) hybrid bolted/bonded (HBB) configurations subjected to tensile shear loading. Several critical design factors influencing the composite joint strength, failure conditions, and load-sharing mechanisms that would optimise the joining performance were assessed. The study of the stress concentration around the holes and along the adhesive layer highlights the fact that the HBB joints benefit from significantly lower stresses compared to only bolted joints, especially for CP …

Challenges and opportunities in vascularized composite allotransplantation of joints: a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Joint allotransplantation (JA) within the field of vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) holds great potential for functional and non-prosthetic reconstruction of severely damaged joints. However, clinical use of JA remains limited due to the immune rejection associated with all forms of allotransplantation. In this study, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of JA through a systematic review of clinical, animal, and immunological studies on this topic. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review in accordance with the PRISMA guidelin…

Arthrocentesis approaches to the phalangeal joints of the one humped camel (Camelus dromedarius).

Irrespective of the exceptional adaptation of dromedaries to harsh environmental conditions, they remain highly susceptible to joint lameness resulting from a range of diverse factors and conditions. The joints most often affected by traumatic osteoarthritis in dromedaries are the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints. A comprehensive understanding of joint anatomy and topography of the dromedary is required to perform arthrocentesis correctly on affected joints. Forty-two distal limbs were taken from 28 camels and studied by gross dissection, casting, ultrasonography, and compute…

Effect of Welding Defects on Fatigue Properties of SWA490BW Steel Cruciform Welded Joints.

Welding is prone to several defects. To test the fatigue properties of the welded defective joints of high-speed rail bogies, SMA490BW steel cruciform welded joints were employed with artificial defects treatment. Consequently, fatigue tests were conducted on the specimens. Fatigue fracture morphology was studied via scanning electron microscopy. The ABAQUS (version 2022) finite element software was used to calculate the stress distribution and concentration factor of cruciform welded joints with defects. The results show that the fatigue limits of 1 and 2.4 mm defect specimens were approximat…

Effect of Varying Normal Stiffness on Soft Rock Joints under Cyclic Shear Loads.

The evaluation of changes in shear resistance on soft (or weathered) rock joints under cyclic shear loads with constant normal load (CNL) and constant normal stiffness (CNS) significantly contributes to increasing the safety and stability of rock slopes and underground structures. In this study, a series of cyclic shear tests were conducted on simulated soft rock joints with regular (15°-15°, 30°-30°) and irregular (15°-30°) asperities under different normal stiffnesses (kn). The results indicated that the first peak shear stress increases with the increase in kn up to the normal stiffness of …
