This retrospective registry-based cohort study aimed to estimate the incidence and prevalence of genodermatoses in the Swedish population and to analyse associated healthcare usage. Patients diagnosed with genodermatoses were identified from the patient registry of Sahlgrenska University Hospital (Gothenburg, Sweden) between 2016 and 2020. Clinical data from medical records were used to verify diagnoses recorded in the National Patient Registry (NPR). The NPR was then searched for International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes Q80-82 and Q84 from 2001 to 2020. The loca

Crisponi/cold-induced sweating syndrome (CS/CISS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by episodic hyperthermia, arthrogryposis, impaired feeding ability, and respiratory distress. The classic CS/CISS is mainly associated with CRLF1 and, rarely, CLCF1. PERCHING syndrome, previously known as CS/CISS type-3 associated with biallelic pathogenic variants in KLHL7, is notable for its few overlapping manifestations. This study presents genotype-phenotype relationships in CS/CISS-like spectrum associated with CRLF1 and KLHL7. Clinical findings of 19 patients from 14 families and four

Sézary syndrome (SS) is defined by erythroderma and circulating atypical T cells, with or without lymphadenopathy. Recently, Thompson et al. identified a distinct population of SS patients with an atypical presentation: a high blood tumor burden of Sézary cells fulfilling criteria for SS but without fulfilling the criteria for erythroderma at the diagnosis. Here, we report a case of a 49-year-old Japanese man with SS who did not present with erythroderma initially, but exhibited erythematous itchy papules symmetrically located on the legs and arms. We also reviewed reported cases of SS without

BACKGROUND: Pachydermoperiostosis is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by the association of periostosis and pachydermia. To date, two genes involved in prostaglandin metabolism, HPGD and SLCO2A1, have been identified.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 7-year-old girl presented digital clubbing of the hands and feet, curved nails, hyperhidrosis, and pachydermia, as well as eczema of the trunk and limbs. The diagnosis of pachydermoperiostosis was confirmed by the detection of a homozygous mutation in the HPGD gene. The second case concerned a 41-year-old male with acral and cepha

In recent years, the incidence of superficial fungal infections involving nondermatophytic and noncandidal fungi increased considerably. The objective of this work was to analyze the epidemiological, clinical and mycological fungal infections due to nondermatophytic and noncandidal fungi diagnosed in the laboratory of parasitology-mycology of Le Dantec hospital in Dakar. With a retrospective study of the various cases of nondermatophytic and noncandidal fungi isolated in the laboratory of parasitology-mycology during the period of November 2013 to December 2014, we collected 22 cases of infect

BACKGROUND: SLURP1 is the causal gene for Mal de Meleda (MDM), an autosomal recessive skin disorder characterized by diffuse palmoplantar keratoderma and transgressive keratosis. Moreover, although SLURP1 likely serves as an important proliferation/differentiation factor in keratinocytes, the possible relation between SLURP1 and other skin diseases, such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, has not been studied, and the pathophysiological control of SLURP1 expression in keratinocytes is largely unknown.
OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to examine the involvement of SLURP1 in the pathophysiology of psor

Epidermal integrity is essential for skin functions. It is maintained by adhesive structures between keratinocytes, mainly the desmosomes and adherens junctions, which provide resistance against mechanical stress and regulate the formation of the skin barrier. As a constituent of both types of intercellular junctions, plakoglobin has multiple interaction partners and mutations in its gene [junction plakoglobin (JUP)] have been associated with mild cutaneous disease, palmoplantar keratoderma and arrhythmogenic heart disease. Here we report a novel lethal phenotype caused by a homozygous nonsens

The molecular genetic mechanisms underlying esophageal cancer are poorly understood. However, a novel gene that may be involved in esophageal carcinogenesis was recently localized by others to distal 17q by linkage analysis of kindreds with palmoplantar keratoderma and squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. To help determine whether a distal 17q gene may also be involved in the pathogenesis of primary Barrett's esophageal and gastric cardia adenocarcinomas, we performed loss of heterozygosity (LOH) analysis of 21 Barrett's and 18 gastric cardia adenocarcinomas at loci spanning 17q: cen-BRCA

In the past decade, an avalanche of findings and reports has correlated arrhythmogenic ventricular cardiomyopathies (ARVC) and Naxos and Carvajal diseases with certain mutations in protein constituents of the special junctions connecting the polar regions (intercalated disks) of mature mammalian cardiomyocytes. These molecules, apparently together with some specific cytoskeletal proteins, are components of (or interact with) composite junctions. Composite junctions contain the amalgamated fusion products of the molecules that, in other cell types and tissues, occur in distinct separate junctio

Focal palmoplantar and gingival keratosis is a rare autosomal dominant disease whose clinical features, and in particular, pathologic alterations and molecular etiology remain to be well defined. Recently we observed a German family affected by the disease in at least 3 consecutive generations. The 4 patients examined showed circumscribed and painful hyperkeratosis at the weight-bearing plantar skin since infancy, rather mild palmar hyperkeratosis, and continuous leukokeratosis confined to the maxillary and mandibulary attached gingiva. There were no nail changes, subungeal keratoses, or folli

HISTORY AND EXAMINATION: A 58-year-old man presented with a sudden eruption of hyperkeratoses on hands and feet. Alcohol abuse had been present 10 years ago, together with a gastric ulcer. Physical examination was unremarkable, except for plantar bizarre hyperkeratoses especially at the sides of the feet as well as some rhagades with spread to the dorsum of the toes. Similar but less severe hyperkeratoses were found on the palms.
INVESTIGATIONS: Laboratory investigation was essentially normal. X-rays of the thorax and sinuses as well as a sonography of the stomach revealed, except for a fatty

It is well known that cell surface glycoconjugates play an important role in cell proliferation, adhesion and differentiation. The aim of this investigation was to define the changes of the glycoconjugate saccharidic moieties in the epidermis and derma of patients affected by several skin pathologies such as seborrheic keratosis, lichen planus, granuloma annulare and palmoplantaris keratoderma. Bioptical specimens from skin lesions as well as from normal skin were fixed in Carnoy's fluid and routinely processed. The sections were treated with HRP-lectins (PNA, DBA, SBA, WGA, ConA, LTA and UEAI

We report a case of KID syndrome in a young girl born to non-consanguinous parents without any similar family history. The typical features of this dysplasia, erythrokeratodermia with dry rugous teguments, pachydermia folds of the knees, facial erythema, peribuccal grooves, leucokeratosic perleche, hypotrichosis of the eye lashes and eyebrows, early onset deafness and ophtalmological lesions were observed. The characteristic pachydermatoglyphia of the hands was present. A malformation of the posterior cerebral fossa--a dandy walker syndrome--was revealed at computed tomography.

The malignant cutaneous lymphomas come into the category of hematodermias but can equally be considered as an abnormality of the immune system. Having described the methods used in the immunocytological investigation of 21 lymphomas and 3 pseudolymphomas, the authors expound their classification of malignant cutaneous lymphomas before stating the results obtained in immunocytological studies in each of the groups. They show how formal separation between epidermtropic malignant cutaneous lymphomas and non-epidermotropic malignant cutaneous lymphomas can be confirmed by immunocytological and ult

Fifty-four unrelated Japanese patients with psoriasis vulgaris were tissue typed using the Sixth International Histocompatibility Workshop antisera. Two control groups were included in this study: Thirty-one pustulosis palmaris et plantaris and 17 seborrheic dermatitis as a disease control and 66 normal, healthy, unrelated Japanses as a reference. HLA-Al (P = 0.0065) from the A locus and HLA-BW37 (P = 0.0164) from the B locus were found to occur with increased frequency in patients with psoriasis vulgaris. No significant difference in antigen frequencies in pustulosis palmaris et plantaris was

To date, over 60% of the world's population has received at least 1 dose of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination, with over 12 billion doses administered globally. Commonly reported adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccination include fever, headache, myalgia, and injection site reactions. The spectrum of documented cutaneous reactions after COVID-19 vaccination is broad; however, pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) or PRP-like eruption secondary to COVID-19 vaccine is exceedingly rare, with only 17 cases previously reported to date in the English literature. In this article, we describe an a
