Robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty associated with lower odds of vascular injury: A retrospective cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vascular injury during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is rare, but potentially catastrophic, leading to ischemia, the need for vascular repair, or limb loss. Robotic-assisted TKA (RA-TKA) incorporates computed tomography (CT)-based three-dimensional planning, intraoperative balancing, and haptic boundaries that may reduce intraoperative saw excursion and mitigate neurovascular risk. This study compared the incidence of vascular injuries between RA-TKA and conventional manual TKA (M-TKA). METHODS: A retrospective query of a nationwide insurance claims database (2010 to 2022) identif

The Potential Role of Synovial T Cell Infiltration Following Knee Joint Injury in Symptoms and Progression to Osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Identification of osteoarthritis (OA)-specific synovial inflammatory pathways and their temporal relevance is critical for therapeutic targeting. We compared mononuclear inflammatory/immune cell responses following joint injury that does or does not lead to OA to define bona fide OA-associated cellular events. METHODS: We undertook detailed temporal flow cytometric and messenger RNA (mRNA) expression analysis in mice after sham or destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) surgery. This was compared with patients with meniscal injury and OA, evaluating the role of synovial monocy

Knee Chondral Shear Injury Repair: A Biomechanical Laboratory Comparison of Suture Bridge to Chondral Pin Fixation.

BACKGROUND: Delamination of chondral fragments in pediatric patients is common and is usually caused by osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) or patellar dislocations. For fragments with minimal to no bone, fixation with screws may not be ideal due to hardware prominence on the cartilage or suboptimal screw purchase, which can result in hardware migration and loss of fixation. Lower-profile chondral fixation devices may be ideal in these circumstances, such as the suture bridge fixation construct and bioabsorbable chondral pin fixation. HYPOTHESIS: Suture bridge constructs would provide superior fi

Effect of a tailored exercise programme on kinematics and kinetic knee injury risk during different side-cutting.

Despite the high incidence of knee injuries reported in non-professional sports, the implementation of specific training programmes aimed at mitigating the kinematic and kinetic factors associated with these injuries remains limited. To determine the effects of a tailored exercise programme on kinematic and kinetic variables during side-cutting activities. Fifty-seven physically active participants were randomised into control group (CG; n: 28) that received no intervention, and an experimental group (EG; n: 29), that performed an individualised exercise programme that included a combination o…

Knee Abduction Angles and Landing Kinematics in Badminton Jump Smash: A Study of ACL Injury Risk Factors.

UNLABELLED: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries can occur in non-contact conditions (e.g., jump-landing) and are common among junior badminton players. The knee abduction angle has been widely identified as a biomechanical risk factor that likely contributes to this injury mechanism. PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the relationship between the trunk and lower limb landing kinematics and the peak knee abduction angle following a jumping smash. METHOD: Twenty-one male junior badminton players performed jump smashes on an instrumented badminton court. Anthropometry was measured; trunk

A Case of Severe Acute Kidney Injury Due to an Antibiotic-Loaded Cement Spacer for Infected Knee Arthroplasty.

The treatment for periprosthetic joint infection frequently involves the placement of a high-dose antibiotic-loaded bone cement spacer (ALCS) into the debrided joint. Typical antibiotics in the spacer include aminoglycosides and vancomycin. It has been believed that systemic absorption of intraarticular antibiotics would be low, and early experience suggested that the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) from ALCS was minimal. However, recent case reports and case series have suggested a risk of AKI owing to antibiotic absorption, though confounding factors are common. We report a case of severe

Combination of curcumin and catalase protects against chondrocyte injury and knee osteoarthritis progression by suppressing oxidative stress.

Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is an age-related progressive degenerative joint disease, which is featured with pain, joint deformity, and disability. Accumulating evidence indicated oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the occurrence and development of KOA. Curcumin is a polyphenolic compound with significant antioxidant activity among various diseases while catalase (CAT) is an enzyme degrading hydrogen peroxide in treating oxidative diseases. We previously showed that the expression of CAT was low in cartilage. However, the combination of curcumin and CAT in KOA is still elusive. In this stu

An uncommon cause of soft tissue and knee infection after penetrating injury in a non-immunocompromised adolescent male.

Non-cholerae Vibrio species and Shewanella species are organisms that rarely infect humans. Symptoms can range from gastroenteritis to wound infections to septicemia. In addition, these infections can lead to multiple poor outcomes ranging from amputations to death. We present a case of an 11-year-old male with prepatellar bursitis of the right knee due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Shewanella algae following an open wound in the Gulf of Mexico complicated by retained oyster shell fragments. He completely recovered after removal of the foreign bodies and organism-directed antimicrobial therap

Vibration improves gait biomechanics linked to posttraumatic knee osteoarthritis following anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) incurs a high risk of posttraumatic knee osteoarthritis (PTOA). Aberrant gait biomechanics contribute to PTOA and are attributable in part to quadriceps dysfunction. Vibration improves quadriceps function following ACLR, but its effects on gait biomechanics are unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) and local muscle vibration (LMV) on gait biomechanics in individuals with ACLR. Seventy-five volunteers (time since ACLR 27 ± 16 months) were randomized to WBV, LMV, or Control interventions. Walk

Missile Injury of the Sciatic Nerve: Observational Study Supporting Early Exploration and Direct Suture With Flexed Knee.

Missile injuries of the sciatic nerve are frequently encountered in modern violent conflicts. Gunshot and fragment wounds may cause large nerve defects, for which management is challenging. The great size of the sciatic nerve, in both diameter and length, explains the poor results of nerve repair using autografts or allografts. To address this issue, we used a simple technique consisting of a direct suture of the sciatic nerve combined with knee flexion for 6 weeks. Despite a published series showing that this procedure gives better results than sciatic nerve grafting, it remains unknown or un
