Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of gut bacteria from Brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) against fish pathogens, with emphasis on the emerging aquatic pathogen, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

The growing threat of antibiotic-resistant pathogens and the limitations on antibiotic use in aquaculture have driven interest in probiotic … euconostoc mesenteroides NM12, Mammaliicoccus sciuri NM06, Carnobacterium maltaromaticum ARL14, and Lactococcus lactis NM951. The findings highlight M. sciuri NM06 and L. mesenteroides NM12 as promising probiotic candidates with notable antagonistic activity against S. maltophilia, supporting their potential for use in aquaculture health management.

Regulation of PI-2b Pilus Expression in Hypervirulent Streptococcus agalactiae ST-17 BM110.

The widely spread Streptococcus agalactiae (also known as Group B Streptococcus, GBS) "hypervirulent" ST17 clone is strongly associated with … n of gfp as a reporter gene in S. agalactiae from Ppi2b promoter. Gene reporter assays performed in Lactococcus lactis strain NZ9000, a related non-pathogenic Gram-positive species, revealed that GBS-specific regulatory factors are required to drive PI-2b transcription. PI-2b expression is up-regulated in the BM110ΔcovR mutant as compared to the parental BM11 …

Seven genera, including Brochothrix, Pseudomonas, Lactobacillus and Lactococcus, met the operational definition of candidate spoilage-associated taxa. Forty candidate metabolites were screened by random forest. Five (tyramine, 4-hydroxyphenylacetaldehyde, adenosine monophosphate, oxidized glutathione and γ-glutamylcysteine) wer …

SdrF, a Staphylococcus epidermidis surface protein, contributes to the initiation of ventricular assist device driveline-related infections.

Staphylococcus epidermidis remains the predominant pathogen in prosthetic-device infections. Ventricular assist devices, a recently developed form of therapy for end-stage congestive heart failure, have had considerable success. However, infections, most often caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis, have limited their long-term use. The transcutaneous driveline entry site acts as a potential portal of entry for bacteria, allowing development of either localized or systemic infections. A novel in vitro binding assay using explanted drivelines obtained from patients undergoing transplantation and

Characterization of the Immune Response of MERS-CoV Vaccine Candidates Derived from Two Different Vectors in Mice.

Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is an acute, high-mortality-rate, severe infectious disease caused by an emerging MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV) that causes severe respiratory diseases. The continuous spread and great pandemic potential of MERS-CoV make it necessarily important to develop effective vaccines. We previously demonstrated that the application of Gram-positive enhancer matrix (GEM) particles as a bacterial vector displaying the MERS-CoV receptor-binding domain (RBD) is a very promising MERS vaccine candidate that is capable of producing potential neutralization antibodies. A Pfs48/45-based vaccine to block Plasmodium falciparum transmission: phase 1, open-label, clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The stalling global progress in malaria control highlights the need for novel tools for malaria elimination, including transmission-blocking vaccines. Transmission-blocking vaccines aim to induce human antibodies that block parasite development in the mosquito and mosquitoes becoming infectious. The Pfs48/45 protein is a leading Plasmodium falciparum transmission-blocking vaccine candidate. The R0.6C fusion protein, consisting of Pfs48/45 domain 3 (6C) and the N-terminal region of P. falciparum glutamate-rich protein (R0), has previously been produced in Lactococcus lactis and elic…
