The first syntheses of (-)-funebrine [(-)-1] and (-)-funebral [(-)-2] are described. The syntheses feature sequential formation of nitrone VI from methyl glyoxylate (5) with oxime 6, transesterification of nitrone VI with (E)-crotyl alcohol (4), and intramolecular cycloaddition of the resulting nitrone VII bearing crotyl ester to afford cycloadduct 7 as a major product. The adduct 7 was readily elaborated to amino lactone (-)-3, the key synthetic intermediate of (-)-1 and (-)-2.

A highly convergent total synthesis of (-)-bastimolide A (1), a polyhydroxy antimalarial macrolide, has been achieved via a longest linear sequence of twenty steps from commercially available glycidyl ethers. Type I Anion Relay Chemistry (ARC) coupling tactics enable rapid construction of the molecule's 1,5-polylol backbone. A late-stage B-alkyl Suzuki-Miyaura union and an Evans-modified Mukaiyama macrolactonization generate the forty-membered Z-α,β-unsaturated macrocyclic lactone.

Taxanes are microtubule-stabilizing agents used in the treatment of many solid tumors, but they often involve side effects affecting the peripheral nervous system. This study assesses the use of immobilized lipase catalyst N435 during reactive extrusion (REX) versus magnetically stirred bulk and solution reaction conditions for the copolymerization of ε-caprolactone with ω-pentadecalactone (CL/PDL 1:1 molar). The first asymmetric α-sulfenylation of azlactones with N-(sulfanyl)succinimides has been developed by using cinchona alkaloid-derived squaramide as a catalyst and 4 Å molecular sieves as an additive. The reaction conditions were suitable to 4-alkyl and benzyl-substituted azlactones as well as N-(benzyl/alkyl/arylthio)succinimides, affording adducts with high enantioselectivities (81-94% ee).

For the triblock copolymer of ε-caprolactone, trimethylene carbonate, and L-lactide, where L-lactide blocks form the two ends, there is a range of compositions over which elastomeric behavior is obtained. REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Cyathostomins comprise 50 helminth species, considered the most problematic equine endoparasites. Three classes of anthelmintic are currently licensed for their control, namely the benzimidazoles (fenbendazole), tetrahydropyrimidines (pyrantel) and macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin and moxidectin).
