The role of consistency in use of morphosyntactic forms in child-directed speech in the acquisition of Irish, a minority language undergoing rapid language change.

Irish is a rapidly changing minority language spoken as the main community language in some areas of the officially Irish-speaking Gaeltacht regions in Ireland. We analyse narratives from 17 parent-child dyads, living in one such area. All children, aged 3-6;4, had high exposure to the local variety of Irish. The input quality was measured by specifying consistency and accuracy of use of morphosyntactic forms in parental narratives directed to their children. The same morphosyntactic forms were analysed in narrative retell by the children. The children produced with high accuracy those forms t…

Language-dependent variation in observed mechanistic performance of web-enabled large language models across myeloid-mucosal immune contexts: a blinded expert evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether observed mechanistic performance of web-enabled large language model (LLM) responses differs across response languages under deployed web conditions and to distinguish such language-associated shifts in relative model performance from stable between-model differences. METHODS: Twenty-four standardized questions spanning intestinal, airway, and urogenital mucosa and four levels of mechanistic complexity were posed to five web-enabled LLMs in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese, yielding 480 responses. Twenty senior clinician-experts, a…

Benchmarking information extraction of physical activity from electronic health record with large language models: an natural language processing pipeline and comparative evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to develop a data model and a natural language processing (NLP) pipeline for representing physical activity (PA) in Electronic Health Records (EHRs), and to evaluate transformer- and Large Language Model (LLM)-based classifiers for sentence-level PA attribute classification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed PA documentation across three patient cohorts (cancer, COVID, and Alzheimer's disease) using structured and unstructured EHR data. A conceptual schema was developed to represent PA and its linguistic attributes. Five BERT models and three modern LLMs (Llama3-8B, MedA…

Digital media use among school-aged dual language learners in Chinese American families: Links to socioecological factors and children's oral language proficiencies.

Limited research has examined digital media use (DMU) in dual language learners (DLLs). This study examined the daily usage time, content, and language of DMU in a longitudinal sample of 120 Chinese-English DLLs (Time 1 [T1] age range = 4.33-7.33 years, Time 2 [T2] age range = 6.01-9.44 years, 42% girls) from low-income families. Children's heritage (HL) and English (EL) oral language proficiencies at T1 (collected August 2020-April 2023) were measured by language tests. At T2 (collected June 2022-December 2024), parents reported DLLs' device ownership and daily DMU time by content (entertainm…

Gamma Oscillation Regularity-Guided Intraoperative Language-Area Visualization and Functional Monitoring of Language-Related Cortical Recruitment Under General Anesthesia in Glioma Surgery.

BACKGROUND: For tumors located in eloquent brain regions, mapping these areas is typically performed to guide surgical resection. We have achieved safe and reliable epilepsy surgery by visualizing epileptic lesions using gamma oscillation regularity (GOR) analysis. In this report, we present a unique case of glioblastoma resection near the language area, where safe and proactive tumor removal was successfully performed using intraoperative language-area visualization and functional monitoring of language-related cortical recruitment under general anesthesia based on GOR analysis. METHODS: A m…

The cost of language: functionally over-dominant language circuits in the human brain may limit cognitive abilities and non-verbal executive functions.

Evolutionarily, the most recent connective system in the human brain is the language circuitry. However, its presence may impose restrictions on higher executive functions apparent as non-verbal talents in art, science, and management- essentially a conflict between talking and doing. Since the associative cortex underlies thinking, the question then is how much of it is assigned to language functions, and how much is left for associative networks that support non-verbal functions such as planning and parallel processing. Arguments: (i) The determinant of neocortical network organization is th…

The improvement following speech and language therapy in children with mixed receptive-expressive language disorder across different age groups: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Mixed receptive-expressive language disorder (MLD) may have long-term impacts on development, sociobehavioral problems, and mental health issues in children. Speech and language therapy (SLT) has been proven to improve developmental language disorder (DLD) in childhood, and post-SLT improvements in language development are more prominent in younger children with DLD than in older children. However, there is still limited evidence on MLD. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether post-SLT improvements occur in children with MLD and whether there are age-related differences …

Deficits in Explicit Language Problem Solving Rather Than in Implicit Learning in Specific Language Impairment: Evidence From Learning an Artificial Morphological Rule.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to delineate differences between children with specific language impairment (SLI), typical age-matched (TAM) children, and typical younger (TY) children in learning and mastering an undisclosed artificial morphological rule (AMR) through exposure and usage. Method Twenty-six participants (eight 10-year-old children with SLI, 8 TAM children, and ten 8-year-old TY children) were trained to master an AMR across multiple training sessions. The AMR required a phonological transformation of verbs depending on a semantic distinction: whether the preceding noun wa…

Setting up a cohort study in speech and language therapy: lessons from The UK Cleft Collective Speech and Language (CC-SL) study.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to increase the evidence base in speech and language therapy are often limited by methodological factors that have restricted the strength of the evidence to the lower levels of the evidence hierarchy. Where higher graded studies, such as randomized controlled trials, have been carried out, it has sometimes been difficult to obtain sufficient power to detect a potential effect of intervention owing to small sample sizes or heterogeneity in the participants. With certain clinical groups such as cleft lip and palate, systematic reviews of intervention studies have shown that …

Perceived Psychologically Controlling Teaching and Foreign Language Learning Engagement: Indirect Associations Through Foreign Language Anxiety and the Moderating Role of L2 Grit.

Foreign language learning engagement (FLLE) is central to sustained classroom involvement, yet little is known about how perceived psychologically controlling teaching (PPCT), foreign language anxiety (FLA), and L2 grit are jointly associated with FLLE among Chinese senior high school students. This study combined structural equation modeling (SEM) and psychological network analysis (PNA) in 285 Chinese EFL learners. SEM tested a moderated indirect association model, whereas PNA estimated conditional associations across FLLE dimensions. PPCT was positively associated with FLA and negatively as…

Abnormal resting-state neural activities of language and non-language cognitive function impairments in stroke patients with aphasia: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Language impairments may mask non-language cognitive deficits in post-stroke aphasia (PSA) patients. Moreover, the underlying neural mechanisms of both language and non-language cognitive impairment remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the activities and functional abnormalities of local and remote brain regions and their relationship with cognitive function in PSA patients, to provide more effective tips in future clinical therapy. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 46 PSA patients and 40 controls, who underwent language and non-language cognitive assessments,…

Universal and Language-Specific Connected Speech Characteristics of Bilingual Speakers With Alzheimer's Disease: Insights From Case Studies of Structurally Distinct Languages.

PURPOSE: Connected speech analysis has been effectively utilized for the diagnosis and disease monitoring of individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Existing research has been conducted mostly in monolingual English speakers with a noticeable lack of evidence from bilinguals and non-English speakers, particularly in non-European languages. Using a case study approach, we characterized connected speech profiles of two Bengali-English bilingual speakers with AD to determine the universal features of language impairments in both languages, identify language-specific differences between the lan…

What About Language?: A Mixed Methods Examination of the Impact of Person-Centered Language on Students' Perceptions of Individuals Who Commit Sex Offenses.

Person-centered language is a well-known approach to reducing stigmatizing labels among marginalized groups. However, little research has explored person-centered language's impact in criminal justice classrooms. Utilizing a mixed-method research design, this study explores the impact of person-centered language on students' perceptions of persons convicted of sex offenses. The study used three sections of an online Sex Crimes course. The course sections were identical, except for the language used and awareness of person-centered language; the control group section did not utilize person-cent…

[Validation of the German language version of the Chronic Ear Survey and its psychometric comparison with an established German language measurement instrument. German version].

BACKGROUND: With the Chronic Ear Survey (CES), a validated measurement instrument for the assessment of disease-specific health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been available internationally since 2000. The aim of this study was to provide a validated German version of this international instrument and to compare it with the German Chronic Otitis Media Outcome Test 15 (COMOT-15). METHODOLOGY: The CES was translated into German via a forward-backward translation process. For validation, 79 patients with COM undergoing middle ear surgery were prospectively included. HRQoL was determined pre

Frontal language areas do not emerge in the absence of temporal language areas: A case study of an individual born without a left temporal lobe.

Language processing relies on a left-lateralized fronto-temporal brain network. How this network emerges ontogenetically remains debated. We asked whether frontal language areas emerge in the absence of temporal language areas through a 'deep-data' investigation of an individual (EG) born without her left temporal lobe. Using fMRI methods that have been validated to elicit reliable individual-level responses, we find that-as expected for early left-hemisphere damage-EG has a fully functional language network in her right hemisphere (comparable to the LH network in n = 145 controls) and intact …
