An unfavorable outcome occurs in 31% of cases of treated severe threshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and includes a retinal detachment of the posterior pole. Tonsil remnants are a problematic outcome in a subset of patients undergoing tonsillectomy. Treatment options are rarely discussed in the literature. This is the first description of the use of argon plasma coagulation (APC) in this setting. APC is based on the principle of ionised argon gas creating a conductive plasma between an activating electrode and a tissue surface. We describe the usability and clinical efficacy of this modality in a group of six patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To determine the multi-use behavior of the G-probe that is traditionally marketed as a single-use cyclophotocoagulation instrument.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A diode laser equipped with a G-probe was used to perform cyclophotocoagulation of the ciliary body in 4 human cadaver eyes and 15 porcine eyes (1,750 mW x 2 seconds). A determination of G-probe effectiveness was made following measurements of G-probe energy output, scanning electron microscopy examination of probe tips, and histologic examination of treated tissue.

A case of subglottic granuloma after extubating Mini-trach II is described. The patient went aorto-coronary bypass and Mini-trach II was inserted for suction of sputum. Mini-trach II was extubated 6 days after insertion. The patient complained of dyspnea 3 months later. Examination showed subglottic granuloma. First, we burned the granuloma by laser under local anesthesia. Because the visual field was not good due to vocal cord movement, we failed to resect the granuloma completely. Forty patients due to undergo endometrial ablation as a treatment for dysfunctional uterine bleeding were recruited to assess the efficacy and safety of endometrial laser intrauterine thermo-therapy using the gynelase. At 12 months the average menstrual score reduction was 88%, the amenorrhoea rate was 70%, and the hypomenorrhoea rate 16%. Four women (10%) have had a hysterectomy for persistent menorrhagia, and one (3%) for pelvic pain. One patient (3%) has had a further endometrial laser ablation. There were no major complications. and 34 patients (85%) were most satisfied with the treatment.

In three patients, two women of 37 and 58 and a man of 68 years, a papillomatous lesion was incidentally detected in the distal part of the oesophagus. Microscopically a squamous papilloma was seen with parakeratosis and in two patients poikilocytosis, indicating an infection with human papilloma virus (HPV). A 74-year-old female with acquired macroaneurysms of the retinal arteries of the left eye is presented. The effects of low-power neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser light delivered intrahepatically in normal rats have been studied. Power settings of 0.5-2.0 W and exposures of 50-2400 s produced well-defined, highly reproducible necrotic lesions of up to 16 mm in diameter.
