PURPOSE: To compare the refractive and visual results of image-guided system-assisted small-incision lenticule extraction (IGA-SMILE) and wavefront-optimized femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) in the treatment of high astigmatism.
SETTINGS: Osmangazi Aritmi Hospital, Bursa, Turkey.
DESIGN: Retrospective.
METHODS: This retrospective case-matched study included 64 eyes that had undergone IGA-SMILE and 64 eyes that had undergone wavefront-optimized FS-LASIK. The mean preoperative myopia and astigmatism were -4.05 ± 1.98 diopter (D) and 3.11 ± 1.06 D in the IGA-SMILE group and

We report a case series of patients who developed post-laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) ectasia or had a progression of keractesia during pregnancy. We reviewed the medical records of 12 patients (20 eyes) who had reported deterioration of vision during their pregnancy and were diagnosed with keractesia. All 12 patients had experienced symptoms of deterioration of vision between 2 months to 1 year of onset of their pregnancies. A total of 17 eyes of 10 patients had developed post-refractive surgery keractesia. Sixteen of these had undergone LASIK and one had undergone femtosecond

Post-LASIK dry eye is the most common postoperative dry eye after ophthalmic surgeries. The clinical signs of post-LASIK dry eye include positive vital staining of the ocular surface, decreased tear breakup time and Schirmer test values, reduced corneal sensitivity, and decreased functional visual acuity. The symptoms and signs usually last for about 1 month after LASIK. A small number of patients continue to experience symptoms more than 1 year postoperatively. It has been suggested that the loss of corneal innervation caused by flap-making is the major cause, affecting the corneal-lacrimal g

UNLABELLED: Small-incision lenticule extraction and wavefront-guided femtosecond-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) provide good visual outcomes and an efficacious correction of myopia or myopic astigmatism with similar levels of safety. Some differences in predictability and the percentage of eyes gaining lines of corrected distance visual acuity are present. A higher level of coma is present after small-incision lenticule extraction, with no clear differences between techniques in spherical aberration. Better contrast sensitivity is achieved in the early postoperative period after

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Laser refractive surgery (LRS) is one of the most common elective procedures performed in the USA today. Patients should be rigorously screened for certain ocular and systemic conditions, which may represent contraindications to LRS. Before treating, the refractive surgeon should be aware of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) labeling for the procedure as well as what other evidence, such as clinical studies, case series, cases reports, and anecdotal evidence, exists. The purpose of this article is to review contraindications to having LRS.
RECENT FINDINGS: Ocular contr

BACKGROUND: Myopia (also known as short-sightedness or near-sightedness) is an ocular condition in which the refractive power of the eye is greater than is required, resulting in light from distant objects being focused in front of the retina instead of directly on it. The two most commonly used surgical techniques to permanently correct myopia are photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK).
OBJECTIVES: To compare the effectiveness and safety of LASIK and PRK for correction of myopia by examining post-treatment uncorrected visual acuity, refractive out

Traditionally, keratoconus has been managed with glasses when mild, contact lenses when moderate and keratoplasty when severe. When cornea-based refractive surgery was first developed it appeared to be a useful option for keratoconus until reports of post-operative progressive ectasia emerged and thus keratoconus was considered a contraindication to refractive surgery. However, improvements in older techniques and the development of new techniques mean that there are now several viable options to avoid keratoplasty in contact lens-intolerant patients. This review discusses the risks and benefi
