The effects of depression and stressful life events on the development and maintenance of syndromal social anxiety: sex and age differences.

This study assessed age and sex differences in the prevalence and incidence rates of syndromal social anxiety (SSA), as well as the predictive role of depressive symptoms and stressful life events on the development and persistence of SSA. A sample of 1,439 young people, between 11 and 14 years of age, was assessed twice within a 12-month interval. No age differences were found. Girls had a significantly higher prevalence of SSA than boys, but there was no sex difference for incidence rate. Depressive symptoms did not play a significant role in either the development or the persistence of SSA,

Legal events as predictors of posttraumatic stress in injured trauma survivors.

Prior research suggests that involvement in a lawsuit may be associated with the development of enduring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms as well as inflated and potentially invalid symptom reports. This research aimed to describe the spectrum of legal events experienced by injured trauma survivors and prospectively assessed the association between legal events and PTSD symptoms. Over a nine month period, hospitalized injury survivors were randomly screened for study participation. Legal events were prospectively assessed, and PTSD symptoms were reported twelve months after the in

Comparison of ICD-10 diagnostic guidelines and research criteria for enduring personality change after catastrophic experience.

Enduring personality change after catastrophic experience (EPCACE) is a diagnostic category included in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision (ICD-10), as one of the adult personality disorders. Preliminary investigation suggests there is considerable endorsement in principle for this new category amongst experts in the field of intentional human trauma, yet many aspects of the diagnosis remain contentious. EPCACE is described in 2 sets of ICD-10 criteria: the Diagnostic Criteria for Research (DCR) and the Clinical Description and D

Parents' marital disruption and its uneven effect on children's academic performance--a simulation model.

Although a substantial amount of social science research has examined the consequences of various life events, much less has been done to examine how the effect may be unevenly distributed. The present research takes children's experiences of parents' marital disruption as an example and demonstrates how a contaminated-distribution model may simulate a scenario in which the effect of parents' marital disruption on children's academic performance is unevenly distributed. Using test performance data from a nationally representative sample of 10,045 American adolescents, the study partitions the

Irritable bowel syndrome and chronic pelvic pain: a singular or two different clinical syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic pelvic pain (CPP) are both somatoform disorders with a high prevalence within the population in general. The objective was to compare both entities, to find the differences and the similarities related to epidemiology and psychosocial aspects like stressful life events, physical and sexual abuse, illness behaviour and comorbidity. The technical literature was reviewed systematically from 1971 to 2006 and compared. According to literature, IBS and CPP seem to be one rather than two different entities with the same localisation of pain. Both syndromes a

Does marital status and marital status change predict physical health in older adults?

BACKGROUND: Evidence for the effects of marital status and marital status change on physical health is equivocal. METHOD: Structural equation models examined whether marital status predicted physical health. Six groups were examined simultaneously: married (M); widowed (W); divorced (D); never married (NM); newly widowed (NW); and newly divorced (ND). There were four annual measures (T1-T4). Both NW and ND were married at T1, but had lost their partners by T2. Four physical health variables were examined: Problems, Limitations, Service use, and Self-rated health (SRH). Age and gender were inc

Long-term effects of early-life environmental manipulations in rodents and primates: Potential animal models in depression research.

Depression is one of the most common human illnesses and is of immense clinical and economic significance. Knowledge of the neuro-psychology, -biology and -pharmacology of depression is limited, as is the efficacy of antidepressant treatment. In terms of depression aetiology, whilst the evidence for causal mechanisms is sparse, some genomic and environmental factors associated with increased vulnerability have been identified. With regards to the latter, the environments in which human infants and children develop are fundamental to how they develop, and parental loss, emotional and physical n

Stressful life events, social support, attachment security and alexithymia in vitiligo. A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: It has often been suggested that stress might trigger vitiligo. However, only one study supported this hypothesis, and no study explored the role of other personality or social factors. METHODS: Out-patients experiencing a recent onset or exacerbation of vitiligo (n = 31) were compared with out-patients with skin conditions in which psychosomatic factors are commonly were regarded as negligible (n = 116). Stressful events during the last 12 months were assessed with Paykel's Interview for Recent Life Events. Attachment style, alexithymia and social support were assessed with the '

Exploring violence exposure, stress, protective factors and behavioral problems among inner-city youth.

This study examined relationships between violence exposure, other stressors, family support, and self-concept on self-reported behavioral problems among 320 urban adolescents (aged 11-18) referred for mental health treatment. Overall, participants reported high levels of violence exposure, with a median of six past encounters with violence as a witness, victim, or through the experiences of associates. All forms of violence exposure (witnessing, being a victim, knowing of victims) were correlated with internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems for males and females. Total violence ex

Special issues related to the treatment of depression in women.

Depressive disorders in women are commonly associated with reproductive events. This association may be due in part to the changing balance between estrogen, progesterone, and other hormones that affect neurotransmitter function throughout a woman's lifecycle. Alternatively, they may be related to psychosocial events surrounding these pivotal times or to both sets of conditions. Some data suggest that depression in women tends to respond differently to antidepressant treatment than depression in men, underscoring the need to examine the risk and treatment of depressive disorders in males and f

[Study of the stress response: role of anxiety, cortisol and DHEAs].

AIM OF THE STUDY: Several studies have exhibited the psychological processes that are implied in the stress response and have shown, according to Selye's research, the participation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the major role of cortisol. The possible action of another adrenal steroïd, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), is increasingly documented. The beneficial effect of the latter and his antistress role would be related to an antagonistic action to that of cortisol. The aim of our study was, first to assess biological and psychological aspects of the stress response, then to d

Forensic evaluation of trauma syndromes in children.

There are significant differences between a clinical evaluation and a forensic evaluation [289-291]. These differences must be kept solidly in mind in performing the evaluation. The forensic evaluator needs to assess the validity of complaints, including the possibility of malingering and the child's ability to describe symptoms accurately, the connection between the symptoms and a given incident, and the potential long-term sequelae of a trauma. The goal of the interview is not to treat, but to obtain information. Assessing the validity of complaints is perhaps the greatest challenge. This re

The importance of psychosocial factors, gender, and severity of depression in distinguishing between adjustment and depressive disorders.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the severity of depressive symptomatology as it relates to: (a) sociodemographic factors and (b) the occurrence and type of acute and chronic psychosocial triggers or life events before admission. METHODS: In total, 718 psychiatric inpatients were assessed with the AMDP-system by the treating psychiatrist within the first 2 days after admission. RESULTS: In the females, sociodemographic factors (being married, children in the household, higher education and the quality of interactions) but not psychosocial stressors or life events were found to be related to

Social factors and psychopathology in epilepsy.

One hundred and six epilepsy patients were assessed over a period of 6 months for psychiatric morbidity, social support, stressful life events in previous year and disability. 45 patients (42.45%) had a psychiatric diagnosis. Organic depressive disorder headed the list (16.98%) followed by mild cognitive disorder (11.32%) and tobacco dependence (8.49%). There was no significant difference in the mean age, sex, mean education, age at onset of epilepsy, duration of epilepsy, psychiatric diagnosis, mean scores on social support scale, presumptive stressful life event scale and disability assessme

"The lizard in the green bottle": "aging out" of problem drinking among Navajo men.

The Navajo exhibit a number of indicators suggesting the extent of significant problems associated with drinking and alcohol abuse. Measures of alcohol-related mortality and morbidity provide stark testimony regarding the shape and magnitude of problem drinking among the Navajo. While these measures highlight patterns of drinking that often result in social, physical, and psychological pathology, there are other, less noted patterns of Navajo drinking. This paper describes a salient, if often overlooked, pattern of Native American drinking by examining the aging out phenomenon among Navajo men

Commonality and specificity of personality disorder profiles in subjects with trauma histories.

Recently, attention has been drawn to a range of disturbances in personality functioning that commonly characterize individuals with a history of severe or prolonged trauma. Many of these features overlap with criteria for some of the Axis II personality disorders. The current study investigated the similarity of personality disorder features in different samples of patients with trauma histories, and specificity of such features compared to other psychiatric samples. Profiles of Axis II features, based on relative frequencies of individual disorder "diagnoses" derived from a common measure (P

[Depression and manic-depressive disorders].

The two major subtypes of manic-depressive illness are bipolar disorder and recurrent major depressive disorder. Biological data strongly indicate that a significant genetic factor is involved in the development of manic-depressive illness. But, stressful life events, environmental stress and premorbid personality factors may also be involved in other important etiologic factors. Some research data indicate that cyclothymic disorder and temperamental disorders may be considered as mild forms of bipolar disorders so called "subaffective disorders". The identification of clinical or biological f
