Epidermoid carcinoma, that is, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, is the most common malignant tumor of the lips. It occurs especially in men. Its primary causes are sun exposure, smoking, and chronic irritation. Leukoplakia is the most frequent precancerous lesion. Epidermoid carcinoma may appear clinically as a scaly erosion or an ulceration. Standard treatment is surgical excision with reconstruction.

Mucous melanomas on the lip are very rare. None of the few available reports has provided a comparison of dermoscopic and histopathological findings. We describe a 33-year-old Japanese man with a mucous melanoma on the lower lip and present a comparison of our dermoscopic and histopathological findings.

BACKGROUND: Mongolian spots in the cleft area of cleft lip have been found in some Japanese children.
OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to study the frequency of cleft lip mongolian spot in children with cleft lip of various severity.
METHODS: Sixty-six babies with unilateral cleft lip were divided into three groups: namely, those with microform cleft lip (10 subjects), incomplete cleft lip (30 subjects), and complete cleft lip (26 subjects). The incidence of cleft lip mongolian spot in the three groups was studied.
RESULTS: Thirty-six babies (55%) had a cleft lip mongolian spot. The mongolian spo

Cardiac transplantation was performed in two infants with unresectable fibromas of the myocardium. In one patient, lip surgery was also required for unilateral cleft lip and palate. At autopsy, communicating hydrocephalus of mild to moderate degree was found in both cases. In the patient with facial clefts, there was also a large, ipsilateral cyst, or rhinocele, of the olfactory lobe. This unusual lesion, which seems to represent a previously unreported malformation, was apparently formed by segmental dilatation of a persistent olfactory ventricle. Cerebral or cranial anomalies are thought to

Awareness of a possible association of late-onset oral acanthosis nigricans with internal malignant disorders is important for early detection and treatment of the underlying cancer. A classic case of malignant oral acanthosis nigricans is reported here, and its possible etiologic factors and pathogenetic mechanisms are discussed.

PURPOSE: To report our experience with 106 cases of lip cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We treated 106 patients with stages T1, T2, or T3 lip cancer (76, 22, and 8 cases, respectively). For the 34 T1 lesions up to 1 cm in diameter, we used a V or W excision. In the 42 T1 lesions greater than 1 cm and the 20 T2 lesions, we used the staircase technique. In 2 T2 cases, the carcinoma was located on the labial commissure and was treated with the Fries technique. For the 8 T3 cases, we used the Bernard-Freeman-Fries technique. In 28 patients, a lip shave was performed and tumor was removed. The 7 pat

BACKGROUND: Lip metastases are rare clinical events that are frequently mistaken for other diagnoses. For sarcomatoid lung carcinoma, a rare histologic variant of non-small cell lung cancer, the incidence and pattern of cutaneous spread is poorly understood.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 79-year-old African American man with a rapidly progressive upper lip cutaneous lesion that provided the first evidence of distant metastatic spread of sarcomatoid lung carcinoma.
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first reported case of lip metastasis in sarcomatoid lung carcinoma. It highlights the impor

BACKGROUND: Lip cancer is one of the most curable primary head and neck malignancies, as the prominent location typically lends to an early diagnosis. The incidence of lip cancer varies by sex, ethnicity, and region, but is estimated to be up to 2.5/100 000 in the United States (squamous cell carcinoma [SCC]).
METHODS: This article will review the current literature and National Comprehensive Cancer Network practice guidelines in the treatment of lip cancer.
RESULTS: Resection of lip cancer with negative margins remains the mainstay of therapy. Positive nodal disease should be treated with n

Trichilemmal carcinoma is a rare malignant skin adnexal tumor derived from the outer root sheath epithelium of the hair follicle. We describe a rare case of trichilemmal carcinoma of the upper lip associated with xeroderma pigmentosa in a young patient. We demonstrate that this tumor, as well as the more frequently reported squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma can occur in association with xeroderma pigmentosa. Making this diagnosis is imperative as the biological behavior of Trichilemmal carcinoma is less aggressive than that of other epithelial malignancies, requiring a different

We report an 18-year-old Japanese woman who had mild photosensitivity and a facial tumour, which was shown to be a morphoeic basal cell carcinoma. Although a line of fibroblasts derived from the patient, Kps6 cells, were slightly more sensitive to UV irradiation than normal cells, their level of unscheduled DNA synthesis was about 20% that of normal cells, and recovery of RNA synthesis after UV irradiation was moderately depressed. Complementation tests, carried out by cell fusion or by microinjection of plasmids harbouring xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) genes, indicated that the patient had XP gr

Background and Objectives: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip is a common malignancy of the oral and maxillofacial region. Medium-to-large post-excisional defects often require reconstructive techniques that preserve oral competence, function, and facial aesthetics. Despite its broad clinical use, the Karapandzic flap lacks comprehensive evidence describing its postoperative outcomes and associated complications. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated all consecutive patients who underwent lip SCC excision followed by Karapandzic flap reconstruction at a tertiar

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of full-thickness lower-lip defects after skin cancer excision is challenging, as both oral function and appearance must be restored. Conventional methods may be insufficient for moderate-sized defects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective observational study included 36 patients with T1-T2N0M0 basal or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lower lip treated between January 2021 and April 2023. Defects involving roughly one-third to two-thirds of the lip were repaired using a combined subcutaneous pedicle flap and labial mucosa flap. Patients were followed for 6-2

A fifteen year review (1968-1982) of all cases of malignant melanomas seen in Singapore revealed nine cases in the oral region. The cases were analysed and the literature reviewed. The cases usually presented late and the hard palate is the commonest site involved. The highest incidence is around the 4th-6th decade. Oral melanomas have a poorer prognosis when compared to cutaneous melanomas and this is similar to other reported series. No difference in sex incidence was seen in this series and the estimated incidence of oral to all other cases of malignant melanomas was about 6%.
