BACKGROUND: Intrahepatic biliary mucinous cystic neoplasms are rare hepatic tumors and account for less than 5% of intrahepatic cystic lesions. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is difficult and the outcome differs among various treatment modalities. The aim of this study is to investigate the clinico-radiological characteristics of intrahepatic biliary mucinous cystic neoplasms and to establish eligible diagnostic and treatment suggestions.
METHODS: Nineteen patients with intrahepatic biliary cystadenomas and two patients with biliary cystadenocarcinomas were retrospectively reviewed. Their cli

In this study we used liver neoplasms induced by several chemical carcinogens to investigate potential nuclear targets associated with beta-catenin/Wnt signaling and potential membrane-associated beta-catenin binding partners. Strong expression of cyclin D1, in a pattern similar to that observed previously for beta-catenin, was observed by Western analysis for all five hepatoblastomas examined regardless of treatment. Increased expression of cyclin D1 was also detected in 12 of 35 (34%) hepatocellular neoplasms. Ten of 15 tumors (67%) that had mutations in the Catnb gene had upregulation of cy…

Rare skin neoplasms in humans, comprising nodules of heavily melanized cells, mimic melanocytic neoplasms seen in horses and laboratory animals and thus are termed animal type melanomas. In part because of their rarity, behavior is unpredictable; many cases manifest a long indolent phase, and metastases are reportable. Over 6 years, the authors encountered nine skin and one lymph node biopsy specimens from six patients in whom light microscopy of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin showed melanocytic neoplasms with prominent pigment synthesis. Aim Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) occur in the ovary, pancreas, and retroperitoneum but very rarely in the liver. Mucinous cystic neoplasms are known to harbor ovarian-like mesenchymal stroma (OLS) expressing progesterone and estrogen receptors. In this study we evaluated steroidogenesis in OLS of 25 hepatic MCNs and 24 pancreatic MCNs. Methods Both steroid receptors and steroidogenic factors were immunohistochemically evaluated using H-scores and results were compared with those in 15 ovarian MCNs and 10 normal ovaries. Results Androgen receptor (AR) H-scores in OLS were significantly high

Studies of clinical series of psoriasis patients have suggested an increased risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer and melanoma; the risk of other neoplasms has rarely been studied. In order to assess the incidence of cancer in a nationwide series of psoriasis patients from Sweden, we followed up, for the years 1965-89, 9773 patients with a hospital discharge diagnosis of psoriasis made during 1965-83, who were alive and free from malignancy 1 y after first discharge. We compared their incidence of neoplasms with that of the national population by computing standardized incidence ratios (SIR). We ob

The cholangioblastic variant of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is a distinctive neoplasm that typically affects young women without underlying liver disease. Morphologically, it demonstrates solid, trabecular, and tubulocystic architecture, biphasic small cell-large cell cytology, and immunoreactivity for inhibin, neuroendocrine markers, and biliary but not hepatocellular markers. In 2021, our group identified a characteristic NIPBL::NACC1 gene fusion in cholangioblastic cholangiocarcinoma, and since then ~20 genetically confirmed cases have been reported in the literature. We report 2 additi

The authors examine the clinical evolution of a patient with an oesophageal neoplasm with intraperitoneal liver metastases unnoticed in preoperative phase. Some months after the explorative operation, the patient first underwent a thoracotomy + a cervicostomy with monopolar exclusion of oesophagus because of a mediastinitis caused by a iatrogenic perforation during the attempt to place an oesophageal endoprosthesis; then he underwent a recanalization by presternal subcutaneous oesophago-colonplasty, stimulated by the good result of the surgical operation and by the patient's excellent clinical

This report describes the cytologic, radiologic and histologic findings in a 76-year-old male who presented with a pathologic fracture of the first metacarpal bone as the result of metastatic transitional cell carcinoma. The primary neoplasm was sited in the right renal pelvis. Metastases were also detected in the liver and confirmed cytologically. Problems encountered with the cytologic diagnosis are explained by correlation with the histologic findings. The case also illustrates the importance of clinicopathologic correlation when interpreting fine needle aspiration biopsies.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma is an aggressive malignant tumor with high lethality.
AIM: To review diagnosis and management of hepatocellular carcinoma.
METHODS: Literature review using web databases Medline/PubMed.
RESULTS: Hepatocellular carcinoma is a common complication of hepatic cirrhosis. Chronic viral hepatitis B and C also constitute as risk factors for its development. In patients with cirrhosis, hepatocelular carcinoma usually rises upon malignant transformation of a dysplastic regenerative nodule. Differential diagnosis with other liver tumors is obtained through comput

CASE SUMMARY: A 10-year-old male neutered Russian Blue cat was presented with a 2-month history of progressive non-ambulatory paraparesis. Spinal MRI revealed a well-demarcated, compressive intradural extramedullary mass at the level of T1 vertebra. The mass had subtle hyperintensity on T2-weighted images, was isointense on T1-weighted images and had diffuse, marked enhancement following gadolinium administration. Neuroaxis MRI, including limited brain sequences, excluded other visible lesions. Thoracic and abdominal radiographs were unremarkable. The mass was resected via a dorsal C7-T2 lamin

We report a case of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) presenting as severe jaundice. The patient, a 59-year-old man, was found to have abnormal liver function, including an elevated total bilirubin level (13.5 mg/dl) with hepatosplenomegaly, but no detectable lymphadenopathy. A liver biopsy and bone marrow examination revealed a lymphoid neoplasm. Pathologic features included invasion of an abnormal clone into the sinusoidal region of the liver, diffuse bone marrow involvement (41.6% of all nucleated cells) and splenomegaly. Small numbers of malignant cells were also detected in the periphera

INTRODUCTION: Hyper-IgM syndrome is an innate error of immunity in which there is a defect in change of isotype of immunoglobulins, with decreased values of IgG, IgA, and IgE, but normal or increased level of IgM. This predisposes to infectious processes at the respiratory and gastrointestinal levels, as well as autoimmune diseases and neoplasm.
CASE REPORT: A 5 year 7-month-old boy with a history of 2 pneumonias, one of them severe, and chronic diarrhea since he was 2 years old. Persistent moderate neutropenia decreased IgG and elevated IgM. Cytometry flow confirmed absence of CD40L. Clinica

Cystadenocarcinoma of the liver is a rare neoplasm that originates from hepatobiliary epithelium. Primary location of this tumor is generally intrahepatic and most cases are in the right hepatic lobe. Herein we present a case of intrahepatic cystadenocarcinoma in a 53-year-old man who had been followed up for 8 years as hydatic cyst disease of the liver. He was admitted to our hospital with jaundice and loss of appetite. Ultrasound and computed tomography showed a cystic lesion that looked like type II cyst hidatic. Thereafter magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic lesion associated with

Delta-like protein (DLK) is a membrane protein with mostly unknown function. It is expressed by several embryonic tissues among others by the hepatoblasts of rodent and human fetal livers. We have investigated in the present study if this protein is expressed in human hepatoblastomas. The presence of DLK has been studied by standard immunohistochemistry in 31 hepatoblastomas and in several differential diagnostically related tumours: hepatocellular carcinomas and in undifferentiated childhood neoplasms. All the hepatoblastomas were positive for DLK; the surrounding liver tissue remained negati

We report what to the best of our knowledge is the first case of primary angiosarcoma of the adrenal gland. A 49-year-old woman, with blunt abdominal trauma, was admitted to our department. Computed tomography revealed a suspected rupture of a liver neoplasm and surgical treatment was performed. At laparotomy there was no evidence of liver tumour but a large mass was found in the right adrenal gland. The mass was removed along with the entire periadrenal fat tissue and locoregional lymph nodes. Microscopically, we found diffuse neoangiogenesis with large, hyperchromatic cells. This cellular pr

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (HEE) is an unusual malignant neoplasm of vasculo-endothelial origin, arising in soft tissues, lung and liver. One case of hepatic HEE is reported in a 32 year-old man wit an isolated multinodular hepatomegaly. The diagnosis was made by the histologic examination of biopsy specimens. At the time of diagnosis, there was evidence of pulmonary metastasis. However, an orthotopic liver transplantation was performed. The tumor cells were immunoreactive with factor VIII-related antigen, BNH9 and vimentin. There was no expression of cytokeratin and epithelial membrane

A uterine cervical cancer is reported in a woman who developed Cushing's syndrome. The tumor measured 1.3 x 0.7 cm, and was a pure small cell carcinoma, identical to that in the lung. The primary tumor cells showed argyrophilia with Grimelius staining and reacted positively to the anti-chromogranin antibody. Clinically, the neoplasm behaved in an aggressive manner in spite of adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and the patient died of widespread metastasis. Cushing's syndrome was noted after the occurrence of liver metastasis with an elevation of the serum adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH

The radiological diagnosis and interventional management of neuroendocrine tumours of the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas are challenging, demanding the complete gamut of available resources. Carcinoid tumours are most commonly found in the appendix and small bowel. Barium studies usually disclose a small solitary mucosal or submucosal mass in the distal ileum at times associated with smooth muscle hypertrophy and thickening of the mucosal folds. Intussusception and bowel obstruction may be the presenting finding. Mesenteric involvement may evoke a desmoplastic reaction with rigidity, fixa
