The Influence of Eye Closure on Somatosensory Discrimination: A Trade-off Between Simple Perception and Discrimination.

We often close our eyes to improve perception. Recent results have shown a decrease of perception thresholds accompanied by an increase in somatosensory activity after eye closure. However, does somatosensory spatial discrimination also benefit from eye closure? We previously showed that spatial discrimination is accompanied by a reduction of somatosensory activity. Using magnetoencephalography, we analyzed the magnitude of primary somatosensory (somatosensory P50m) and primary auditory activity (auditory P50m) during a one-back discrimination task in 21 healthy volunteers. In complete darknes…

Epileptic encephalopathy with continuous spikes and waves in the occipito-temporal region during slow-wave sleep in two patients with acquired Kanji dysgraphia.

We encountered two patients with acquired Kanji dysgraphia in whom continuous spikes and waves, dominant in the occipito-temporal region, were recorded during slow-wave sleep. Electrical status epileptics during sleep (ESES) was demonstrated on overnight electroencephalography, and dipoles clustered in and around the posterior inferior temporal cortex on magnetoencephalography. Functional neuroimaging suggested dysfunction in the left posterior temporal lobe, including the posterior inferior temporal cortex. The patients had normal intelligence with no problems in reading and writing Kana, as …

Oscillatory alpha modulations in right auditory regions reflect the validity of acoustic cues in an auditory spatial attention task.

Anticipation of targets in the left or right hemifield leads to alpha modulations in posterior brain areas. Recently using magnetoencephalography, we showed increased right auditory alpha activity when attention was cued ipsilaterally. Here, we investigated the issue how cue validity itself influences oscillatory alpha activity. Acoustic cues were presented either to the right or left ear, followed by a compound dichotically presented target plus distractor. The preceding cue was either informative (75% validity) or uninformative (50%) about the location of the upcoming target. Cue validity × …

Temporal patterns and mechanisms of epilepsy surgery failure.

Epilepsy surgery is an accepted treatment option in patients with medically refractory focal epilepsy. Despite various advances in recording and localization noninvasive and invasive techniques (including electroencephalography (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), magnetoencephalography (MEG), subdural grids, depth electrodes, and so on), the seizure outcome following surgical resection remains suboptimal in a significant number of patients. The availability of long-term outcome data on an increasing nu…

A demonstration that task difficulty can confound the interpretation of lateral differences in brain activation between typical and dyslexic readers.

Dyslexic readers (DRs) manifest atypical patterns of brain activity, which may be attributed to aberrant neural connectivity and/or an attempt to activate compensatory pathways. This paper evaluates whether differences in brain activation patterns between DRs and typical readers (TRs) are confounded by task difficulty. Eight DRs and eight TRs matched for age, sex, and nonverbal IQ performed pseudoword rhyming tasks at two levels of difficulty during magnetoencephalography. Task difficulty varied with the number of successive target pseudowords presented before the test pseudoword. Regions of i…

Dissociation between MEG alpha modulation and performance accuracy on visual working memory task in obsessive compulsive disorder.

Oscillatory brain activity in the alpha band (8-13 Hz) is modulated by cognitive events. Such modulation is reflected in a decrease of alpha (event-related desynchronization; ERD) with high cognitive load, or an increase (event-related synchronization) with low cognitive demand or with active inhibition of distractors. We used magnetoencephalography to investigate the pattern of prefrontal and parieto-occipital alpha modulation related to two variants of visual working memory task (delayed matching-to-sample) with and without a distractor. We tested nonmedicated, nondepressed patients sufferin…

Temporal dynamics of plastic changes in human primary somatosensory cortex after finger webbing.

The primary somatosensory cortex (SI) exhibits a detailed topographic organization of the hand and fingers, which has been found to undergo plastic changes following modifications of the sensory input. Although the spatial properties of these changes have been extensively investigated, little is known about their temporal dynamics. In this study, we adapted the paradigm of finger webbing, in which 4 fingers are temporarily webbed together, hence modifying their sensory feedback. We used magnetoencephalography, to measure changes in the hand representation in SI, before, during, and after finge…

Cortical differentiation of speech and nonspeech sounds at 100 ms: implications for dyslexia.

Neurophysiological measures indicate cortical sensitivity to speech sounds by 150 ms after stimulus onset. In this time window dyslexic subjects start to show abnormal cortical processing. We investigated whether phonetic analysis is reflected in the robust auditory cortical activation at approximately 100 ms (N100m), and whether dyslexic subjects show abnormal N100m responses to speech or nonspeech sounds. We used magnetoencephalography to record auditory responses of 10 normally reading and 10 dyslexic adults. The speech stimuli were synthetic Finnish speech sounds (/a/, /u/, /pa/, /ka/). Th…

Quantitative electroencephalogram analysis in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and its clinical significance.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is among the most prevalent forms of inherited generalized epilepsy in adolescents. It is characterized by photosensitivity and seizures triggered by photic stimulation. Previous magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies have demonstrated abnormal neural dynamics in JME; however, the ability of advanced electroencephalography (EEG) analysis to characterize these abnormalities remains unclear. This exploratory study investigated EEG-derived neurophysiological alterations in patients with JME and their potential relationship to photosensitivity. METHODS:…

Beta bursts in SMA mediate anticipatory muscle inhibition.

In motor networks, inhibition has been associated with oscillatory activity in the mu (8 to 12 Hz) or beta (13 to 30 Hz) bands, yet how these rhythms ultimately influence muscle activity remains unclear. The bimanual load-lifting task (BLLT) elicits anticipatory inhibition of the elbow flexors in the load-supporting arm during voluntary load-lifting, providing a suitable model to study oscillatory mechanisms of muscle inhibition. We recorded magnetoencephalography in adult participants performing the BLLT. Optimal postural stabilization occurred when biceps brachii inhibition preceded unloadin…

Flexibility of internal attention: divergent spatiotemporal profiles for feature and object cueing.

Internal attention efficiently prioritizes information in working memory (WM), yet it remains unclear whether it reflects a unified, domain-general mechanism, or a flexible set of operations tailored to the format of selected information. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we characterized the spatiotemporal alpha-band dynamics underlying feature-based (color, orientation) and object-based (left, right) retro-cues that direct internal attention within WM. Behaviorally, both cue types improved performance relative to neutral conditions, with object-based cues yielding a modest advantage. Neura…

Broadband neural oscillatory dynamics at stimulus onset and offset during 40-Hz auditory stimulation.

The 40-Hz auditory steady-state response (ASSR) has been examined extensively because of its association with gamma-band oscillations and its potential as a biomarker for psychiatric disorders. However, most studies have focused particularly on neural activity at the driving frequency, with less focus on the temporal evolution of oscillations across other frequency bands during auditory stimulation. We aimed to elucidate the broadband oscillatory dynamics during 40-Hz click trains, focusing on stimulus onset and offset. Magnetoencephalography recordings were obtained from 30 healthy adults exp…

Gamma activation spread reflects disease activity in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: A non-invasive measure of cerebral motor system dysfunction would be valuable as a biomarker in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Task-based magnetoencephalography (tMEG) measures the magnetic fields generated by cortical neuronal oscillatory activity during task performance. Gamma activations are periods of high-power and high-frequency cortical oscillations integral to motor control. METHODS: tMEG was undertaken during 60 bilateral isometric hand grip exercises in ALS (n = 42) and compared with healthy controls (HC, n = 33). Gamma activation spread (GAS) was estimated by calcu…

Early peripheral nerve impairments in type 1 diabetes are associated with cortical inhibition of ankle joint proprioceptive afference.

OBJECTIVE: Diabetic sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy (DSPN) is a common complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). However, it is still unclear how the cortical processing of proprioceptive afference is altered due to DSPN. METHODS: Cortical responses to right and left ankle joint rotations were recorded with magnetoencephalography and pooled together in 20 T1DM participants and 20 healthy controls for source space comparisons. T1DM participants also underwent a lower limb nerve-conduction study to correlate peripheral nerve function with the cortical responses. RESULTS: Primary sens…
